Finsterforst are a band from Germany that has been featured before in this zine and plays a musical style they describe as being 'black forest metal' and this is a review of their 2023 ep "Jenseits" which will be released in September by AOP Records.
Clear vocals and choirs start of the album which also adds in a touch of pagan metal before going into a heavier musical direction. Synths, keyboards and orchestration can also be heard in certain sections of the recording while the riffs also add in a lot of melody and the solos and leads are done in a very melodic post metal style.
Most of the tracks are also very long and epic in length while the vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams. All of the musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them along with the songs also bringing in elements of folk music as well as one song also introducing back up shouts onto the recording.
The ep also has its atmospheric moments along with a couple of songs also adding in a brief use of clean playing and acoustic guitars. Spoken word parts can also be heard briefly, One of the tracks also introduces folk instruments into the music and a small amount of blast b eats and fast tremolo picking is also added on the closing song. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover philosophy, nature and humanity themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Finsterforst and if you are a fan of atmospheric post black metal with elements of folk music, you should check out this ep. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Freiheit" and "Katharsis". 8 out of 10.
