1. Can you tell us a little bit about the band for those that have never heard of you before?
Black Serpent Sun was formed in late 2010 by myself and Ohynn after a good few years apart playing in various other bands and living in different areas of the country, we have a long history together musically and decided after a few practices to finally pursue the music we had always wanted to play. We recorded the 2011 Demo over the course of a few months, it sounds very rough due to the recording process being planned around when we would both be together in order to actually do it. The three tracks on that demo were later re-recorded for the split CD “Ex Oblivione” with Prometheus Rising and sound much better and closer to what we wanted as we are both now much closer and able to practice and write together more often.
2. How would you describe your musical sound?
A heavy mix of doom, death and black metal. There is no overriding preference as to what affects the songs or sound, it is important that the atmosphere and meaning is right more than trying to copy a set style.
3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
Most of the lyrics are based on my own short stories which, in turn, take a great deal of influence from Lovecraft, Beirce, Howard etc as well as occult theories and practices. “The Desolate King”, for example, deals with “The Watcher”, the Archon driven mad by the constant cycle of birth-failure-death of his creations and that he must return to bring final destruction to the endless dance and thus find peace. Even the that which cannot die, which exists without and within time must finally accept the futility of existence.
The lyrics deal with the notion that in order to overcome, to dominate the weak, to crush thy enemies it is necessary to draw upon the unseen to create, to have the will to influence each and every aspect of reality. Their are no gods or masters other than the ones we create or allow to exist.
4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the bands name?
A few things inspired the band name but mainly being massive fans of “Conan The Barbarian” in particular, the historical depiction of the serpent/snake as a giver of forbidden knowledge and the symbol of the black sun and its many uses.
5. Has the band done any live shows or is this strictly a studio project?
We are currently in preparation for a forthcoming live show which promises to be a true event in itself, we have until this point considered ourselves solely a studio project and have little interest in playing every show that comes along. In order for us to fully commit to a live presentation it has to meet certain criteria rather than playing for the sake of playing. We have very recently finally found a drummer who wishes to work with us and are pleased to welcome Mark from Ethernal into the Black Serpent Sun cult. He is someone whom fits well alongside us and understands what we are trying to accomplish, another stranger out of time and space with whom we shall walk upon the ashes of forgotten empires.
6. Recently Depressive Illusions released your split with Prometheus Rising, what are your thoughts on the other band that participated?
Prometheus Rising were an absolute pleasure to work with on the split, everything came together with little problem and anything that did arise was sorted out quickly. It was only the second time for myself that a split CD was that easy to put together as some in the past have been like pulling teeth to make sure everything is done right. It helped greatly that Depressive Illusions put the release out, again a really pleasant experience and a label that I would really like to work with again in the future.
Musically I thought both bands complimented each other very well, I enjoy Prometheus Rising's style and attitude and look forward to hearing more in the future.
7. Currently, you are unsigned are you looking for a label or received any interest?
Yes and no. We would like to work only with people on our wavelength rather than just go with anyone for the sake of being on a label, we have received positive feedback from old label contacts made in previous bands over the years but none that I, personally, would feel right being on. We are always open to offers so that our music may reach the widest possible audience however we have yet to find a trusted and respectable platform to operate from.
8. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black, pagan and death metal?
We've had quite a bit of feedback from friends and followers worldwide, enough to know that we're doing something that others can pick up on. Our Bandcamp gets a lot of visits and we do try to make all the releases we put up there free for the time being, obviously this will change if and when we do find a label. Judging as well by the number of websites I've found recently where our music has been uploaded to for download we are quite well liked in Eastern Europe, the whole aspect of someone else uploading it really doesn’t bother me too much as they must have thought it worth sharing to take the time to do so in the first place.
9. Are there any other musical projects besides this band or is this a full time line up?
I have a couple of side projects but Black Serpent Sun is and will remain my main priority. I produce ambient ritual music under the name of Kolbladnyr (the first CD worth of material is up for download at the Black Serpent Sun Bandcamp page - read the description first though as its probably better than the actual music!) and have a couple of other things in the planning stages - a folk project and an Industrial Black Metal thing I've been tinkering with.
10. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?
From the newer material that we are currently working on it seems as though we will continue to throw anything we feel that fits into the music, it’s certainly along the same lines but heavier and a little more focused than before in our quest to bring forth the Unspeakable.
We are always open to expanding our sound however feel a great loyalty to our core structures and beliefs, as long as we stay true to the principles of Black Serpent Sun we will continue to explore the realms of creativity.
11. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
Influences for myself would be: Dissection, Burzum, Bal Sagoth, Deceased, Morbid Angel, Candlemass, Cirith Ungol, Goblin, The Doors, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Solstice, Manowar, Slayer, Amebix, Fabio Frizzi. I enjoy all types of music as long as it evokes a reaction on some level, I cannot stand music that does “nothing”. I spend a lot of time seeking out bands that interest me and also a lot of time going backwards and digging through my own record collection to rediscover lost treasures such as Mythic, Heretic, 7th Child and Ancient Rites (only a handful that I have recently been playing). I also enjoy music such as Joy Division, 70s rock and punk - its all a bit of a mix really.
For me (Ohynn) I enjoy the following: Immortal, Ancient Rites, Borknagar, Anathema, Angel Corpse, Manowar, Magica, Arkona, Deicide, Megadeth and HolyHell as well as Prog Rock bands such as Yes, Kitaro, Rush and Jethro Tull along with some punk and hardcore thrown in too.
12. How would you describe your views on Paganism and Occultism?
These are just words. I have little time for others views on either subject, most seem to simply take the broad definition of either these days laid out for them on bookshelves in high street shops. These are the ones I detest, unable to look any further to see the truth and unaware that the power to become more than human is within the grasp of any who can truly open their eyes to the energies that surround us.
Within the splinters of time there exists another, an ever evolving canvas upon which innumerable visions are portrayed in unison. Every emotion, every urge, every desire is simply a shared reaction resulting in the creation of new realities which go on to form infinitely yet all guided to dance for They Who Wait Beyond The Gates. The empty song of time itself. Order and chaos, life and death, love and hate. All in one and one in all. Through the use of various methods and paths it is possible for the human mind to open to these realities and accomplish anything that is willed, to manipulate and create realities.
It is not important as to what names are given to the paths traveled by the seekers, the purity of being without definition and thus the purity of Inner Supremacy is what enables the vision to see beyond, the sense to hear beyond. If something is useful to the individual then it should be used, regardless of where it originates, what system of belief it is defined by in order to achieve the desired effect.
It is through careful use of techniques such as meditation, sensory deprivation, visualization and ritual that it becomes possible to enter worlds of our own choosing, beyond all notions of good and evil. In 13 shall they find He, in the space where only 12 shall stand the blinded eyes of purity shall see. Iaa!
13. Outside of music what are some of your interests?
Writing, painting, nature, collecting music, films and books as well as photography which is something I have come to enjoy. I tend to pursue solitary interests as most people tend to become tiresome after a while. I have a big interest in the paranormal, supernatural and ancient civilizations and cultures as I find it interesting that so many of them connect somehow in their spiritual beliefs. Continuing my studies is also of great importance to me, I am constantly looking to expand my knowledge.
(Ohynn) I enjoy immersing myself in the world of science fiction, I take any opportunity I can to escape the limits of this world. I am also a big follower of professional wrestling and have a great interest in Japanese culture namely the ways of the samurai, the art of sumo wrestling and anime.
14. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?
Thanks for the interview, we really appreciate the interest and support for what we are doing. We wish to hail those who have supported us so far - our families, friends, our kinsmen in Ethernal, Prometheus Rising and Depressive Illusions. Any zines, distros and bands that wish to ride under the banner of the Black Serpent Sun please get in touch, we should also have some copies of the full “As Eden Sinks To Grief” CD ready soon so please check us out on Bandcamp and Facebook.
