Varechian Interview

 

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the artwork?

1 /   first came VARECH)))  back in  1993 / 94 , we did one  studio demo "chosen reekhearsals"  and one live tape "urghlive and well sludge" then the band disbanded after the respective departure of priestess samantha on keys and of myself regis whyte on vocals, will tell more about the new album's artwork, in the next question regarding the same topic ... we briefly reformed back in 2015 to record a full anthology album, featuring 14 tracks but much more polished and pro sounding, it was pressed up to 17300 physical promo cds, that were then inserted in the issue nr 101 of the german magazine, LEGACY in FEBRUARY 2016 ...

2.Recently you have released a new album, musically how does it differs from the stuff you have released in the past?

2 /  VARECHIAN is the continuation of VARECH))) but with only me as common member , MATHRIEN D came as a multi instrumentalist and producer as well as ANTON SUPREMACY on guitars / bass / keys, the main musical difference is that we dropped all the doom))) elements, and then explored more different extreme metal styles like, old school black metal, deathlike grindcore, industrial and experimental overtones, more kind of a crossover vibe !!!

 

3.The band has been around since 1993 but has not released much material, can you tell us a little bit more about the last three decades?

3 /  that's because of the aforementioned factors, in the meantime i joined and recorded with a variety of bands like: ANCESTRAL FUNERAL / EXHUMER / KABBAL KARMA / T.S.T / MAD RIPPER GRIMM / WHYTE /  ((( S°O°S )))

 

4.Some of your lyrics cover arcane spells and dark magic, do you have an interest in the occult?

4 /  well partly, i started that way with "apokaleipsis l' ultimanifeste" on the first album, telling  my own luciferian vision about the human nature and his terrestrial existence, on the new album there's "ordo astrum argentinum" about aleister crowley's former secret societies, but my own symbolic interpretation of it, there's also "neikromanteion of river acheron" regarding the ancient greek mythology about their own vision of the underworld, but reinterpreted, all  by myself  for sure!!!

5.What are some of the other lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored so far with the music?

5 /  otherwise i have many other subjects on my lyrical content, for example in "mutant humans regression" a dystopian description of what would become human beings, after a thermonuclear warfare, in "still the warmongers"  the ravage and capitalistic profits in warlike efforts , in "l' ancien monde" in french also a realistic but apocalyptic post - modern vision, of  our human life downhere !!!

6.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Varechian'?

6 /  it simply means what proceeds of VARECH))) and  that follows up to it !!!

7.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the album cover?

7 / that's an oil painting of mine entitled "candle skull's island"  that's a wax skulls island being sink in magmatic lava, in front of a petrified and fossilized forest !!!

8.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black and death metal?

8 /  I don' t  slice apart  black, death metal or whatever, we are X TREME RADICAL METAL in many different forms, just as we feel like from one album to another!!! on the first album it was 90 percent positive so far, we will see how people react to the new album "tabula rasa ultima /// the morbidoom))) to be released october 26 th 2021.

9.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

9 /  we haven' t with this new line up, and really don' t know when it will happen ...

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

10  /  if there will be a third album, it will be a step further, probably more climatic and spaced out, with a much heavier sound  possibly !!!

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

11 /  bands that  influenced that second album, in a way or another  i would say old MAYHEM, old SAMAEL old CELTIC FROST, old TERRORIZER and all stuff by PAN.THY.MONIUM ...

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

12 /  take the time to fully discover the new album, it's not 11 times the same style, be open minded you won' t regret the aural journey, that's a promise !!!

Varechian/Tabula Rasa Ultima///The Morbiddoom)))/Sliptrick Records/2021 CD Review

 

  Varechian  are  a  band  from  France  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  album  "Tabula  Rasa  Ultima///The  Morbiddoom)))"  which  will  be  released  on  October  26th  by  Sliptrick  Records.

  Water  sounds,  synths  and  clean  playing  start  off  the  album  while  spoken  word  parts  can  also be  heard  briefly  before  going  into a   heavier  musical  direction.  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  along  with  most  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Elements  of  death  metal  are  also  utilized  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  while  melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  brought  into  the  music  they  are  done  in  more  of  an  old  school  style  along  with  the  synths  also  returning  on  some  of  the  later  tracks.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  album  more  of  a  raw  feeling  along  with  the  music  also  showing  influences  of  both  the  first  and  second  wave  era's.  The  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

 One  of  the  later  songs  is  also  an  instrumental,  as  the  album  progresses  spoken  word  pars  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  a  couple  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  personal  experiences,  childhood  trauma,  interpretation, invocation  of  death,  arcane  spells  and  dark  magick.  

  In  my  opinion  Varechian  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  " L’Ancien  Monde"  "Neikromanteion  Of  River  Acheron"  and  "Re-entering Purgatory".  8 out  of  10.
