Funeral Art/Cuivie/2017 Full Length Review

    Guatemala's  Funeral  Art  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  the  ambient,  funeral  doom  and  black  metal  style  of  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2017  album  "Cuivie".

  Ambient  style  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  and  synths  start  off  the  album  and  after  the  intro  grim  black  metal s creams  are  added  onto  the  recording  along  with  the  music  mixing  the  ambient  and  heavy  parts  together  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion  as  well  as  most  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  When  female  vocals  are  utilized  they  give  the  songs  more  of  an  operatic  feeling  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  bring  in  a  decent  amount  of tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  along  with  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  being  very  heavily  influenced  by  funeral  doom  metal.

  Spoken  word  parts  when they  are  brought  into  the  music  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  ritualistic  feeling  while  some  of  the  synths  also  mix  in  elements  of  classical  music  along  with  the  songs  also  bringing  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  the  music  also  bringing  in  a  great  amount  of  90's  black  and  doom  metal  influences.

  Funeral  Art  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  their  mixture  of  black  metal,  ambient  and  funeral  doom  metal,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  old  school  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Spanish  and  cover  poetic  devotion's  to  Lilith. 

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Funeral  Art  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  ambient,  funeral  doom  and  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Escencia  En  Mi"  and  "Lilith  Ritus".  8  out  of  10.

Funeral Art/Misanthropic Rituals/Todeswalzer/One Last Howling/2017 3 Way Split Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  3  way  split  album  between  Guatemala's  Funeral  Art,  U.S.A's  Misanthropic  Rituals  and  Germany's  Todeswalzer  called  "One Last  Howling"  which  was  also  self  released  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Funeral  Art  who  returns  with  a  mixture  of  dark  ambient  and  raw  black  metal

  His  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  ambient  style  soundscapes  along  with  some  ritualistic  whispers  a  few  seconds  later  and  the  second  track  is  very  long and  epic  while  also  bringing  in  atmospheric  sounding  synths  along  with  some   programmed  beats  and  when  vocals  are  utilized  they  are  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.

  During  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  the  tremolo  picking  in  the  riffing  gives  the  songs  a  more  raw  feeling  and  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  fashion  and  there  is  also  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover darkness,  night  and  witchcraft  themes. 

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Funeral  Art  and  if you  are  a  fan  of  dark  ambient and  raw  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Niebla  del  Ovido.

  Next  up  is  Misanthropic  Rituals  a  solo  project  from  New  Jersey  that  plays  a  very  raw  form  of  black  metal.

  His  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  clean  guitars  and  semi  melodic  vocals  are  added  into  the  music  a  few  seconds  later  before  evolving  into  a  heavier  style  which  uses  grim  black  metal  screams  which  also  have  a  depressive  edge  to  them  at  times  and  one  the  second  track  the  music  goes  into  more  of  a  raw  and  fast  musical  direction.

  During  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  the  music  uses  more  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  along  with  the  vocals  getting  more  high  pitched  and  you  can  also  hear a  small  amount  of melodies  along  with  the music  being  very  heavily  influenced  by  the  Finnish  style,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Misanthropic  Rituals  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw  black  metal  solo  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  his  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Serenity  In  Death  Filled  Paradise".

  Next  up  is  Todeswalzer  a  band  that  plays  a  very  raw  form  of  black  metal.

  Their side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  drum  beats  and  dark  riffing  that  also  uses  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  to  give  the  music  a  more  raw  feeling  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  yet  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  the  music  is  mostly  rooted  in  the  90's  second  wave  style.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  bears  can  be  heard  while  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  the  second  track  is  very  long  and  epic  in  length,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  violent  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Todeswalzer  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Let  The  Swords  Speak".

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it to  all  fans  of  raw  black  metal.  8  out  of  10.

Funeral Art/Cultus Tenebrarum IX annorum/Prison Tatt Records/2016 Compiation Review

  Funeral  Art  are  a  duo  from  Guatemala  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  mixture  of  ambient  black  metal  and  funeral  doom  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2016  compilation  "Cultus  Tenebrarum  IX  annorum" which was  released  by  Prison  Tatt  Records.

  Atmospheric  synths  start  off  the  compilation  and  bring  in  elements  of  ambient  while  also  bringing  in  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys  and  they  also  mix  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of the  music  and  the slow  riffs  are also  very  heavily  influenced  by  funeral  doom  metal  and  most  of  the  tracks a re  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Operatic  female  vocals  can  be  heard  at  times  while  the  vocals  also bring  in  a  great  amount  of  grim  and  depressive  black  metal  screams  and  acoustic  guitars  along  with  pianos  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  programmed  blast  beats  can  be  heard  and  when  guitar  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion  and  there  is  also  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts  on  a  couple  of  songs  and  saxophones  and  one  track  also  brings  in  a  small  amount  of  demonic  growls  and  operatic  male  vocals.

  Funeral  Art  creates  a  compilation  that  mixes  black  metal,  ambient,  funeral  doom  and  avant  garde  music  to  create  something  very  original,  the  production  sounds very  dark  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Spanish  and  cover  darkness,  night,  witches,  wishes  and  human  problem  themes.

 In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  collection  of  songs  from  Funeral  Art  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  ambient  black  metal  and  funeral  doom,  you  should  check  out  this  compilation.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Abandoned"  "La  Belleza  Occulta"  "Viejo  Bosque"  and  "Arcano  II".  8  out  of  10.

  Funeral  Art  are  a  solo project  from  Guatemala  that  has  been  featured  before  in this  zine  and  plays a  mixture  of  ambient  black  metal  and  funeral  doom  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2015  album  "La Belleza Oculta"  which  was  released  on  cassette  by  Weakie  Discs.

  Ambient  style  keyboards  start  off  the  album  and  they  also  use  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys  and  after  the  intro  the  music  retains  its  ambient  elements  while  also  adding  in  programmed  beats  along  with  some operatic  female  vocals  and  saxophones  and  most  of  the  tracks  are  very long  and  epic  in  length.

  After  awhile  guitars  are  added  into  the  music  and  they  start  out  using  clean  playing  while  also  getting  more  distorted  in  some  parts  of  the  songs  and  bringing  in  more  of  a  raw  and  melodic  style  of  black  metal  that  also  uses  a  small  amount  of  programmed  beats  and  the  first  2  main  tracks  have  intros  before  them  while  the  later  closes  with  an  outro.

   As  the  album  progresses  grim  black  metal  screams  are  added  into certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  bring  in  a  touch  of  post  metal  while  also  being  very  melodic  at  the  same  time  to  the  songs  and  there  is  also  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts  and  the  slower  riffs  also  add  some  funeral  doom  influences  in  the  songs  when  they  are  utilized  and  there  are  2  bonus  tracks  with  the  first  one  being  instrumental.

  On  this  recording  Funeral  Art  plays  a  musical  style  that  is  mostly  rooted  in  dark  ambient  while  also  mixing  in  elements  of  depressive  black  metal  and  funeral  doom  along  with  some  soprano  vocals  to  create  something  very  original,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and r aw  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark,  occult,  and  witchcraft  themes.

Funeral Art Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what is going on with the musical project these days?
I just released a new EP, it is instrumental, called Órenyall, is only for download.
I'm currently working on what would be my next album, under the name of 'La Belleza Oculta' which it translates as ' the hidden beauty', for now i still do not have an exact date for the release.

2.In June you had released an ep, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?
Órenyallo is an EP  which fuses many genres, it is difficult to describe the sound itself, the intro and outro it could take as a mixture of Ambient and New Age with a touch of classical music, while the main song (Órenyallo), covers many more genres, like Doom, Ambient, Black Metal, shoegaze and a guest saxophonist (Carlos Torre).
I think it would be more like a musical journey.

3.All of the musical on the new ep is all instrumental, what was the decision behind going into this direction and also would you use vocals again in the future?
It is instrumental, because i use to promote my new facebook page.
Yes, I will use voices again in the future.
Also to add, the songs from my last EP will be included with vocals on 'La Belleza Oculta'

4.When you had lyrics what where the topics and subjects that where explored?
In the beginning, occultism, magic, even included in my first full album, the complete Catholic mass in latin, later, the inspiration came from my former partner Witchy Hxryn and more human subjects were included in lyrics, love, sadness, melancholy, dreams, etc ...

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Funeral Art'?
Funeral is taken by the Funeral Doom genre and Art i take it because i personally believe that music is an art form.
That's why the Doom always been present in Funeral Art.

6.Originally the musical project was a duo but now is a solo project, are you open to working with other musicians again the future?
Funeral Art originally started as my solo project in 2006, Witchy Hxryn entered in 2011.Funeral Art will remain my solo project, but now i am coming to agreements, to have guest musicians.

7.The band split up briefly, what was the cause of the split and also the decision to reform?
It was for personal reasons, but then i realized how important it is to make music, of course, from my personal point of view.

8.I have read that you have also done one live show with this project, are you open to doing any shows again in the future?
Yes, i had the idea of ​​doing a live performance this year, but for now, i dedicate to finish my next album.

9.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?
Previously Satanarsa Records () a Russian label relaunched my last three jobs, 'Susurros de una Noche', 'El reflejo de tu Ausencia' and 'Semper Altus'.
I am currently looking for a label who wants to release my next album, so i 'm open to proposals or invitations.

10.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of ambient, black and doom metal?
Really well, as always, much better than i expected.

11.When can we expect another full length and also where do you see your music heading into musically during the future?
As i said earlier, I'm already working on a new album, but still i do not have a release date.
In the future i hope my music by released by a label, to reach more people and prevail, because it is my legacy .

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
My first influences came from, Depressive, Doom, Ambient, Black Metal.
I hear today these genres, but added it, Post-Black Metal, Shoegaze, or Blackgaze.

  Funeral  Art  are  a  solo  project  from  Guatemala  that  plays  an  instrumental  mixture  of  ambient  black  metal  and  funeral  doom  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  self  released  2015  ep  "Orenyall".

  Ambient  style  keyboards  start  off  the  ep  giving  the  music  a  very  atmospheric  feeling  along  with  a  variety  of  many  different  keys  along  with  a  tragic  feeling and  the  songs  at  times  also  bring  in  elements  of  neo-classical  and  when  drum  beats  are  added  onto  the  recoridng  they  also  give  the  songs  more  of militant  feeling.

  All  of  the  songs  on  the  recording  avoid  using  any  lyrics  and  vocals and  when  guitars  are  finally  brought  in  the  music  they  are  only  used  in  a  slow  fashion  that  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  funeral  doom  metal  feeling  which  is  also  mixed  in  with  a  more  depressive  style  of  black  metal  and  there  is  also  a  brief  use  of  saxophones  being  utilized  along  with  some  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  blast beats  are  added  onto  the  recording.

  Funeral  Art  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  an  instrumental  style  of  dark  ambient  and  mixes  it  in  with  depressive  black metal  and  funeral  doom  to  create  a  sound  of  his  own  and  the  production  also sounds  very  powerful  for  being  a  self  released  recording.

  In  my  opinion  Funeral  Art  are  a  very  great  sounding  instrumental  mixture  of  ambient  black  metal  and  funeral  doom  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  solo  project.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Orenyallo"  and  "Funeral  Art".  8  out  of  10.
