The Last Seed/Revenant/Nihilistische KlangKunst/2020 CD Review

The  Last  Seed  are  a  duo  from  Germany  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  an  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  album  "Revenant"  which  will  be  released  in  May  by  Nihilistche  KlangKunst.

A  very  dark  and  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  and  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams.

Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  atmospheric  sounding  keyboards  are  also  added  into  some  parts  of  the  recording.  Most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  the  tremolo  picking  during  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  giving  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  the  music  also  adding  in  a  good  mixture  of  both  old  school  and  modern  influences  as  well  as  one  track  also  introducing  melodic  vocals  onto  the  recording  and  some  of t he  screams  also  start  utilizing  a  more  depressive  tone,  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief use  of  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  and  a  later  song  also  introduces  clean  playing  onto  the  recording.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  paranormal  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  The  Last  Seed  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Watchers"  "Ghost"  "Wilderness"  and  "Arcane  Gestalts".  8  out  of  10.

The Last Seed Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?
A.: The Last Seed is a studio project with two members and not really a band. "Hellboy" is our first release.

2.You have an album coming out in June, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?
A.: I think it is no use describing the sound or dropping fancy genre names at this point. Listen to the CD and decide yourself if you like it or not. Yes surprise, it is Black Metal.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
N.: Resistance against all the self-proclaimed lightbringers, who’ve put their lantern in the middle of the sheep and told them to stay close to the light. I prefer people to understand themselves as an indivdual, who’s walking his own way, exploring the darkness.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'The Last Seed'?
A: You could replace "seed" by "generation". The generation that has passed a wasted youth in the meaningless 90s or in the even more meaningless charcateristically called 00s. It is the observation of a generation that sleepwalks into extinction by means of decadence, consumerism and by following a false pursuit of happiness that finally turns into isolation.

5.Has the band done any live shows or is this strictly a studio project?
A: As already mentioned before, it is a studio project with two members and not a band. So there are or will be no live performances as it would be very difficult for us to handle two instruments or more at the same time. If you want to listen to our songs, buy the CD.

6.I have noticed there is very little information about the band online, is this intentional for the time being?
N.: It’s about the music and the spirit. We’re not in need of this despicable self-expression. Only weaklings need an own website to know that they exist. Only the sheep are craving for a „like“.

7.The album is going to be released on 'Nihilistische KlangKunst', how did you get in contact with this label?
A: Karor contacted us several years ago and, since then, has released a lot of material from our other projects that do not exist anymore and have meanwhile been replaced by The Last Seed.

8.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the album cover?
N.: We did the photos in our studio, playing the instruments while wearing these tinkered wolfmasks, we’ve botched spontaneously together with my sister and my brother in law during a night in December 2016. And we had this fog machine. The original idea was to show the connection between man and beast, reason and instinct. A friend of us saw the photos and wanted to try something, by blending them with pictures from the woods. So it wasn’t a planned progress, which leads to the coverartwork.

9.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of atmospheric black metal?
A: Exuberant joy and high expectations. Our albums sell like hot cakes.

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
A: There will be no comprehensive genre changes, but a new record means a new sound and new songs with other influences and moods. However, we will not be heading towards entirely new horizons with this project. If you call this release "atmospheric black metal", you will probably do the same for the next.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
A: Maybe you can pick out some influences yourself. That makes it much more interesting than getting everything handed on a plate.

12.What are some of your non musical interests?
A: Swimming, reading and cycling.

N.: Don’t forget walking in the rain.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

A: Thank you very much for the interview.

The Last Seed/Hellboy/Nihilistische KlangKunst/2018 CD Review

The  Last  Seed  are  a  band  from  Germany  that  plays  an  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  album  "Hellboy"  which  was  released  by  Nihilistische  KlangKunst.

A  very  heavy  and  melodic  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  use  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  which  also  gives  the  songs  a  more  raw  feeling  along  with  the  vocals  being  mostly  grim  black  metal  screams  as  well  as  the  solos  and  leads  also  using  a  great  amount  of  melody.

Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  synths  when  they  are  utilized  makes  the  music  sound  more  atmospheric  along with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  sounding  very  powerful  and  one  track  also  adds  in  a  brief  use  of  symphonic  elements  as  well  as  a  couple  of  tracks  also  adding  in  thunder  samples  and  on  track  also  introduces  spoken  word  parts  onto  the  recording.

The  Last  Seed  plays  a  style  of  atmospheric  black  metal  that  is  very  different  and  original  form  most  bands  of  the  genre,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

In  my  opinion  The  Last  Seed  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Throw  The  Bones"  "Become  The  Stubborn  Goat"  "Form  Your  God"  and  "Rule  The  Deep".  8  out  of  10.
