Behexen/Beyond The Four Gates/Werewolf Records/2025 Double Album Review

 

  Behexen  are  a  band  from  Finland  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  very  satanic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2025  compilation  album  "Beyond  The  Full  Gates"  which  will  be  released  on  January  17th  by  Werewolf  Records  and  consists  of  their  first  3  demo's  from t he  demo's  and  the  demo  that  was  recorded  and  released  under  their  original  name  Lords  Of  The  Left  Hand.

   Dark  soundscapes  start  off  the  compilation  before  going  into  a  very  fast  and  raw  musical  direction  which  also  utilizes  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.

  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Sound  effects  are  also  added  into  the  music  at  times  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  style  when  they  are  utilized.

  Synths  are  also  introduced  on  the  second  demo  which  also  mix  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music  on  some  of  the  tracks.  The  first  recording  under  the  name  Behexen  also  shows  a  lot  of  progress  from  the  release  under  their  old  name  as  well  as  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  death  metal  growls.

  When  spoken  word  parts  are  utilized  they  also  bring  in  more  of  a  ritualistic  atmosphere  along  with  one  song  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  folk  music  touches.  The  third  demo  shows  the  music  getting  more  raw  and  aggressive  as  well  as  using  less  synths  then  the  previous  release.

  One  of  the  tracks  is  also  a  Rotting  Christ  cover  as  well  as  the  promo  from  the  mid  90's  also  bringing  in  more  of  a  demonic  atmosphere  as  well  as  bringing  out  a  very  fast  and  raw  style  of  Finnish  black  metal  which  would  later  evolve  on  the  full  lengths.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  a  mixture  of English  and  Finnish  and  cover  Satanism,  Occultism,  Rituals  and  Blasphemy  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  collection  from  Behexen  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  Finnish  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  compilation.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Ave  Satani"  "The  Land  Of  The  Trolls"  "The  Flames  Of  the  Blasphemer"  and  "Black  Storm  of  Satan's  Glory".  8/5  out  of  10.

Behexen/My Soul For His Glory/Moribund Records/Hammer Of Hate Records/2008 CD Review

  Behexen  are  a  band  from  Finland  that  plays  a  very  raw  and  primitive  form  of  satanic  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2008  album  "My  Soul  For  His  Glory"  which  was  released  as  a  joint  effort  between  Moribund  Records  and  Hammer  Of  Hate  Records.

  Drums  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  drumming  with  a  good  amount  of  blast  beats  being  thrown  into  the  music  at  times,  while  the  synths  which  are  only  utilized  on  the  intro  bring  a  very  dark  and  ritualistic  sound  to  the  music,  as  for  the  bass  playing  it  has  a  very  dark  tone  with  riffs  that  follow  the  riffing  that  is  coming  out  of  the  guitars.

  Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  black  metal  riffs  that  are  very  dark,  raw  and  primitive  sounding  with  some  melody  and  thrash  influences  being  thrown  into  the  riffing  at  times,  while  the  lead  guitars  when  they  are  utilized  are  very  dark  and  melodic  sounding  guitar  solos  and  leads.

  Vocals  range  from  high  pitched  and  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  along  with  some  deep  demonic  growls  being  utilized  at  times  as  well  as  some  Gregorian  chants,  while  the  lyrics  cover  Satanism,  Occultism  and  Rituals,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  dark,  raw  and  primitive  sound  to  it.

  In  my  opinion  Behexen  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw  and  primitive  satanic  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of t his  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Born  In  The  Serpent  Of  The  Abyss"  "Cathedral  Of  The  Ultimate  Void"  and  "And  All  Believers  Shall  Be  Damned".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.
