Ars Moriendi/Lorsque les coeurs s'assechent/Archaic Sound/2023 Full Length Review

 

  France's  Ars  Moriendi  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  more  of  an  atmospheric  and  progressive  from  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2023  album  "Lorsque  les  coeurs  s'assechent"  which  will  be  released  in  August  by  Archaic  Sound.

  Acoustic  guitars  start  off  the  album  and  also  returns  on  some  of  the  later  tracks  while  clear  vocals  and  synths  can  also be   heard  at  times.  The  music  also  goes  into  more  of  a  progressive  direction  in  certain  sections  of  the  album  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Vocals  are  mostly  angry  sounding  black  metal  screams  while  the  music  also  has  its  atmospheric  moments.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  sound  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  great  amount  of tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  album  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  as  well  as  most  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length,  battle  sounds,  clean  chants/singing  and  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  operatic  female  vocals  are  also  added  on  the  closing  track.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  French  and  cover  the  ability  of  humans  going  from  the  purest  innocence  to  the  most  absolute  perversity.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Ars  Moriendi  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  and  progressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  'Lorsque  les  coeurs  s'assechent"  and  "Le  blasphemateur".  8  out  of  10.

Ars Moriendi/La solitude du pieux scelerat/Archaic Sound/2019 CD Review

  Ars  Moriendi  are  a  solo  project  from  France  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  very  atmospheric  and  progressive  mixture  of  black  and  dark  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2019  album  "La  solitude  du  pieux  scelerat"  which  will  be  released  in  May  by  Archaic  Sound.

  Dark  soundscapes  and  spoken  word  parts  start  off  the  album  while  atmospheric  sounding  synths  can  also  be  heard  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

  Vocals  bring  in  a  decent  mixture  of  both  black  metal  screams  and  death  metal  growls  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.  When  acoustic  guitars  are  utilized  they  also  give  the  songs  more  of  a  progressive  feeling  along  with  some  clean  vocals  also  being  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording.

  Elements  of  doom  and  dark  metal  can  also  be  heard  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  along  with  some  spoken  word  parts  also  being  utilized  at  times  and  as  the  album  progresses  an  acoustic  track  is  also  added  onto  the  recording.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  French  and  cover  darkness,  religion  and  suffering  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from Ars  Moriendi  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  and  progressive  black  and  dark  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "La  solitude  du  pieux  scelerat"  and  "Venefica  Part.  II  Per  flammae".  8  out  of  10.

Ars Moriendi/La Singuleriere Noirceur D' Un Astre/Archaic Sound/2014 CD Review

  Ars  Moriendi  are  a  1  man  band  from  France  that  plays  a  very  atmospheric  and  dark  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "La  Singuleriere  Noirceur  D'  Un  Astre"  which  was  released  by  Archaic  Sound.

  Screams  and  sound  effects  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  spoken  word  parts  which  also  leads  to  elements  of  trip  hop  making  their  way  into  the  music  and  after  a  couple  of  minutes  the  music  starts  getting  more  heavier  and  atmospheric  along  with  some  synths  and  black  metal  screams  and  you  can  also  hear  some  melodic  guitar  leads  being  utilized.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  album  sound  very  powerful  and  the  music  also  speeds  up  at  times  with  some  black  metal  guitar  riffing  and  adds  in  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  while  the  guitar  leads  utilize  progressive  elements  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  which  also  leads  to  clean  playing  and  acoustic  guitars  becoming  a  huge  part  of  the  bands  musical  sound  while  the  main  focus is  on  the  more  heavier  parts.

  All  of  the  songs  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  their  is  also  a  decent  amount  of  melody  in  the  music  along  with  a  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  there  is  also  a  great  amount  of  atmospheric,  trip  hop  and  ambient  sounds  being  added into  the  music  in  the  parts  where  synths  are  added,  as  the  album  progresses  the  music  gets  more  diverse  and  every  song  sounds  different  from  each  other  as  well  as  all  of  them  standing  out  on  their  own  and  on a  couple  of  the  tracks  there  is  a  brief  use  of  clean  singing  male  and  female  vocals  and  spoken  word  parts.

  Ars  Moriendi  create  a  very  original  style  of  black  metal  with  his  musical  sound  finding  a  perfect  balance  between  darkness,  atmosphere,  melody  and  heaviness  as  well  as adding  in  elements  of  trip  hop, progressive  and  dark  ambient  to  his  epic  structures,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  French  and  cover  darkness  and  cosmos  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Ars  Moriendi  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric  dark/black  metal  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Verite"  and  "Ars  Moriendi".  8  out  of  10.
