Gaoth Anair/Gatherings In The Dark.../Fiadh Productions/2023 Album Re-Issue Review

 

  Gaoth  Anair  are  a  solo  project  from  new  Zealand  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  played  a  fantasy  themed  atmospheric,  depressive  and  raw  form  of b lack  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2004album  "Gatherings  in  The  Dark"  which  will b e  re-issued  in  April  by  Fiadh  Productions.\

  Atmospheric  sounding  synths  start  off  the  album  and  also  mix  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times  as  well  as  mixing  in  elements  of  dungeon  synth  and  capturing  the  atmosphere  of  an  epic  fantasy  soundtrack.  Most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  vocals   are mostly  grim y et  depressive  sounding  black  emtal  screams.

  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a very  melodic  style  when t hey  are  utilized.

  Spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  one  of  the  tracks  also  being  an  instrumental.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  Fantasy  and  Mysticism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  was  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Gaoth  Anair  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric,  depressive  and  raw  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  re-issue.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Awoke  By  The  Bloodstone  Gate"  "Fifth  Plague"  and  "Forgotten  Wanderers  Ove r the  Sea  od  SOuls".  8  out  of  10.

Gaoth Anair/Sochraid/2001 Demo Review

  Gaoth  Anair  are  a  1  man  band  from  New  Zealand  that  plays  a  very  grim,  raw  and  primitive  form  of  atmospheric  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2001  demo  "Sochraid".

  Drums range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  drumming  with  some  blast  beats  being  thrown  into  the music  at  times,  while  the  bass  playing  has  a  very  dark  tone  with  riffs  that  follow  the  riffing  that  are  coming  out  of  the  guitars.

  Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  atmospheric  black  metal  riffs  that  are  very  dark,  raw  and  primitive  sounding  in  the  old  school  vein  and  there  are  no  guitar  solos  or  leads  present  on  this  recording,  as  for  the  acoustic  guitars  which  are  only  used  on  the  last  song  use  finger  picking  to  enhance  the  dark  atmosphere  of  the  demo.

  Vocals are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  along  with a  brief  use  of  clean  singing  chanting  and  spoken  word  parts  as  well  as  a  brief  use  of  nature  samples,  while  the  lyrics  cover  fantasy,  and  darkness  themes,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  dark,  lo-fi,  raw,  and  primitive  sound  in  the  90's  black  metal  vein.

  In  my  opinion  Gaoth  Anair  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw  and  primitive  atmospheric  black  metal  band  that  got  over  looked  in  the  end  because  they  signed  to  a  crappy  label  that  had  bands  that  where  the  total  antithesis  of what  black  metal  stands  for,  which  the  person  in  this  project  did  not  support  himself,  but  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Eternal  Winter"  and  "Under  The  Twilight".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.
