  Italy's  solo  project  Dawn  Of  A  Dark  Age  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  an  atmospheric,  avant  garde  and  experimental  mixture  of  black  and  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2025  album  "Ver  Sacrum"  which  will  be  released  in  December  by  My  Kingdom  Music.

  Nature  orientated  soundscapes  and  field  recordings  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  acoustic  guitars  a  few  seconds  later  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction.  Most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Clarinets  are  also  utilized  at  times  while  the  music  also  mixes  jazz,  avant  garde  and  experimental  elements  into  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs.  Vocals  are  done  in  more  of  a  grim  black  metal  style  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  direction  and  clear  singing  is  also  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  album

  At  times  the  recording  also  gets  very  atmospheric  sounding  along  with  the  slower  sections  of  the  album  also  adding  in  touches  of  doom  metal.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  as  well  as  a  few  tracks  also  adding  in  some  tribal  style  chants,  throat  singing  and  percussion,  spoken  words  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  parts  of  the  album  and  the  closing  track  also  adds  in  some  keyboards.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Italian  and  covers  the  ancient  Samnite  people.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Dawn  of  A  Dark  Age  and  if   you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric,  avant  garde,  experimental  black  and  doom  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Il  Voto  Infranto  (L'Ira  Di Mamerte)"  and  "Venti  Anni  Dopo  -  La  Partenza  (Nascita  Della  Nazione  Sannita)".  8  out  of  10.

Dawn Of A Dark Age/Transumanza/My Kingdom Music/2023 Full Length Review

 

  Italy's  Dawn  Of  A  Dark  Age  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  an  iconoclastic  and  avant  garde  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2023  album  "Transumanza"  which  will  be  released  in  December  by  My  Kingdom  Music.

  Nature  sounds  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  spoken  word  parts  a  few  seconds  later  before  introducing  acoustic  guitars  onto  the  recording  which  also  add  in  touches  of  folk  music  and  also  return  on  later  tracks.  Clarinets  are  also  added  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  some  of  the  songs  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  heavier  guitar  riffing  while  the  music  also  has  its  avant  garde  and  experimental  moments.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  the  songs  also  mixing  in  influences  of  jazz  music  and  the  female  vocals  also  give  the  songs  more  of  an  operatic  touch.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast b eats  can be  heard  which  also  gives  the  album  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  High  pitched  black  metal  screams  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  recording  as  well  as  some  clear  male  vocals  also  being  utilized  at  times.  Pianos  are  also  added  in  on  a  few  songs  and  the  tracks  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Italian  and  cover  Historical  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Dawn  Of  A  Dark  Age  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  avant  garde  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Transumante"  and  "I  Regi  TraTTuri".  8  out  of  10.

  Italy's  Dawn  Of  A  Dark  Age  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  more  of  an  atmospheric,  avant  garde  and  experimental  style  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  album  "Le  Forche  Caudine"  which  will  be  released  in  September  by  Antiq.

 Horse  sounds  start  off  the  album  before  adding  in  some  synths  and  atmospheric  soundscapes  while  the  clarinets  also  add  in  elements  of  jazz  music  when  they  are  utilized.  Clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  recording  along  with  the  music  also  having  its  experimental  and  avant  garde  moments.

  Both  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  songs  also  mix  both  the  experimental  and  heavy  parts  together.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  some  stringed  instruments  also  being  added  into  some  parts  of  the  album. 

  Touches  of  Italian  folk  music  can  also  be  heard  at  times  along  with  the  vocals  being  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  as  well  as  some  spoken  word  parts  also  being  utilized  briefly  and  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats.

  When  tremolo  picking  it  utilized  they  also  give  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  as  well  as  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  one  track  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  melodic  chants  and  vocals.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  Samnites.

Dawn Of A Dark Age/La Tavola Osca/Antiq/2020 CD Review 20 CD Review

  Italy's  Dawn  Of  A  Dark  Age  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  them  expanding  on  the  experimental.  avant  garde  and  atmospheric  style  of  black  metal  from  their  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  album  "La  Tavola  Osca" which  will  be  released  in  July  by  Antiq.

  Field  recordings  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  spoken  word  parts  a  few  seconds  later  while  both  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  When  clarinets  are  utilized  they  also  give  the  music  more  of  an  avant  garde  feeling  along  with  the  acoustic  guitars  bringing  in  folk  music  influences.

  The  music  also  mixes  both  the  heavy  and  experimental  parts  together  at  times  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  recording  more  of  a  raw  feeling  along  with  the  guitar  solos  and  leads  being  done  in  a  very melodic  style.

  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  melody.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Melodic chants  and  singing  can  also  be  heard  briefly  as  well  as  some  synths  also  being  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  an  atmospheric  feeling.  Touches  of  jazz  music  and  classical  music  can  also  be  heard  at  times,  spoken  word  parts  are  also  utilized  on  the  second  track.

 Operatic  female  vocals  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  when  percussion  is  utilized  briefly  it  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  tribal  feeling  as  well  as  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  nature  sounds  and  ritualistic  chants.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Italian  and  cover  the  Samnites  People,  valiant  people  who  had  inhabited  Central-Southern  Italy.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Dawn  Of  A  Dark  Age  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  experimental,  avant  garde  and  and  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "La  Tavola  Osca  (I  Atto)".  8  out  of  10.

Dawn Of A Dark Age/The Six Elements, Vol.4 Air/Nemeton Records 2016 CD Review

  Italy's  Dawn  Of  A  Dark  Age  have  returned  with  the  final  volume  in  a  4  part  series  which  also  shows  them  the  jazz  influenced  experimental  and  avant  garde  style  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  album  "The Six Elements, Vol.4 Air"  which  will  be  released  in 2016  by  Nemeton  Records.

  Distorted  drones  and  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  giving  the  music  an  experimental  and  avant garde feeling  and  you  can  also  hear  nature  sounds  at  times  and  after  awhile  grim  black  metal  screams  kick  in  and  after  the  intro  acoustic  guitars  are  added  onto  the  recording  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Once  the  music  gets  heavy  it  goes  for  a  fast,  raw  black  metal  style  that  also  uses  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  once  the  music  slows  down  folk  instruments  and  melodies  are  added  onto  the  recording  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  classical  guitars  can  be  heard at  times.

  Elements  of  jazz  and  ethnic  music  can  be  heard  in  the  music  at  times  and  when  whispers  are  utilized  they  add  in  a  grim  atmosphere  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  most  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  the  music  also  brings  atmospheric  synths  into  some  parts  of  the  songs  and  one  song  also  brings  in  a  brief  use  of  melodic  vocals.

  Dawn  Of  A Dark  Age  creates  another  recording  that  shows  that  black  metal  can  be  very  experimental  and  mix  in  different  non  metal  genres  while also  keeping  a  very  raw  and  grim  atmosphere as  well  as  being  very  original,  the  production  sounds  very  raw  yet  powerful  and  heavy  at  the  same  time,  while the  lyrics  cover  natural  world,  human  nature,  despair,  hatred  and  seasons.

  Italy's  Dawn  Of  A  Dark  Age  have  returned  with  a  new  album  continuing  the  experimental  and  avant  garde  style  of  black  metal  with  the  album  being  self  released  in  2015  and  called  "The Six Elements, Vol.3 Fire''.

  Classical  guitars  start  off  the  album  and  after a  few  seconds  grim  black  metal  screams  and  elements  of  Italian  folk  and  ethnic  music  and  after  the  intro  heavy  guitars  are  added  into  the  music  and  adds  in  more  of  a  raw  side  of  the  genre  along  with  some  atmospheric  synths  and  they  also  mix  the  folk  and  ethnic  elements  of  the  genre.

  Spoken  word  parts  can  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  the  guitar  leads  are  very  melodic  sounding  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  a  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Cellos and  violins  can  be  heard  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  and the  riffs  also  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  melody and  classical  guitars  also  make  their  return  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  all  of  the  songs  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  diversity  while  also  remaining  true  to  its  black  metal  roots  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Dawn  Of  A  Dark  Age  continue  the  avant  garde  and  experimental  black  metal  style  of  previous  recordings  while  also  showing  a  great  amount  of  progress,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and r aw  while  the  lyrics  cover  natural  world,  human nature,  despair,  hated  and  seasons  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Dawn  Of  A  Dark  Age  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  avant  garde  and  experimental  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Enonga's  Bell  1566"  and  "Homecoming".  8/5  out  of  10.

Dawn Of A Dark Age/The Six Elements Vol.2 Water/2015 CD Review

  Dawn  Of  A  Dark  Age  are  a  duo  from  Italy  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  raw,  experimental  and  avant  garde  style  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2015  album  "The  Six  Elements  Vol.  2  Water".

  Water  and  thunder  sounds  start  off  the  album  and  a  few  seconds  later  synths  and  people  noises  are  added  onto  the  recording  which  also  leads  up  to  whispers  and  melodic  vocals  along  with  a  small  amount  of  violins  and  then  heavy  guitars  start  to  make  their  presence  known  onto  the  recording  along  with  some  grim  black  metal  screams  and  deep  death  metal  growls.

      Once  the  album  gets  past  the  intro  the  music  gets  more  structured  and  starts  to  add  in  some  melodic  guitar  solos  while  also  going  even  more  into  a  black  metal  direction  as  well  as  adding  in  more  avant  garde  elements  with  both  saxophones  and  violins  and  a  few  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  as  the  album  progresses  the  music  gets  more  fast  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  bringing  in  blast  beats  and  more  of  a  raw  and  old  school  black  metal  sound  which  they  also  mix  in  with  the  more  experimental  side  of  their  musical  style  and  on  some  of  the  tracks  they  bring  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  one  of  the  songs  also  brings  in  a  brief  use  of  classical  guitars  and  they  close  the  album  with  an  instrumental  and  outro.  

  Dawn  Of  A  Dark  Age  creates  some  very  original  sounding  music  on  this  recording  taking  a  raw  style  of  black  metal  and  mixing  in  elements  of  folk  music,  avant  garde  and  experimental  which  results  in  songs  that  take  the  black  metal  genre  into  a  different  direction,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  Natural  World,  Human  Nature,  Despair,  Hatred  and  Seasons.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Dawn  of  A  Dark  Age  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw,  experimental  and  avant  garde  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Otzuni  (The  Black  City  In  Apulia)"  and  "The  Verrin's  Source  (On  Mount  Field)".  8  out  of  10.

Dawn Of A Dark Age Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?
Dawn Of A Dark Age was born last January with the aim of exploring different elements within the matrix Black Metal, which permeates the compositions, especially for the use of wind instruments such as the clarinet and saxophone, trying new colors, underused in the genre.

2.Recently you have released your first album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the album?
I would say that, as the title suggests, the sound I have in mind for this project is the sound of nature, in his prime, in contrast with what is the human discomfort, who continues to abuse, fueling and satisfying his continuous thirst for power. For this I am opposed to the sounds (almost) clean that tend to the perfection of nature (drums, bass, horns) with those who are the frustrations of modern man, the distinctive black metal, distorted and raw guitars.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
As mentioned earlier, the texts concerning man's relationship with nature and with higher beings and supernatural. The alienation of modern man, who has everything but doesn’t have anything, it leads to madness, to make slaughter against nature and against his fellow man. Hate, war, religion and frustration, the ingredients that are raping the nature and reduce man in misery.

4.The new album is the first chapter in a concept of 6 different albums that are going to be released in between 2014-17,
The first album, Earth, will be released on July 1st, and is the first chapter of the saga “The Six Elements”, divided into six elements that govern human nature. Each of the six discs will explore new territories and lands, that I feel more in touch with the elements in question. At the end of the sixth the circle will be closed and all the elements will be brought together under one dark sky.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Dawn Of A Dark Age'?
We are in a world of ego, exploitation, misery, poverty, and the blind man doesn’t realize that the nature to which it owes its precarious life is rebelling against him. And it does so explicitly, with the force of the elements that will lead to the inevitable break between the human race and the Earth.

6.Currently there are only 2 members in the band, are you open to working with other musicians in the future or do you chose to remain a duo?
We are already considering to add other musicians for live, and for the studio it depends on the ideas and colors that nature and music will require. If there will be no good conditions we can remain a duo without any problem.

7.Currently the band is unsigned, are you looking for a label or do you feel labels have become obsolete  in these days and ages?
I decided to self produce the entire project, unless some label can be interested in the global concept without hindering us in any point of view, especially music. It’s a project that requires enormous efforts for its realization, a kind of Wagnerian Ring of the Nibelung, and a label not willing to believe and promote our project at 360 degrees, would only hinder our work. If no one is willing to contact us at these conditions, we will happily remain independent to reign in the underground, which continues to have its own dignity and its own particular source of inspiration.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?
We are really pleased with the reaction of the fans of black metal, as well as fanzines and fans who decide to support us, giving us a great support to bring to an end our mission.

9.Are any of the band members involved with any other musical projects?
Yes, Buran is the leader of the black metal band Athanor and death metal band Hellsteps, and I'm busy with a side project of Depressive Suicidal Black Metal, “Suicidal Ruin”.

10.What can we expect music wise when the second volume is released?
It's like asking what the weather will do tomorrow! Maybe it is like today, maybe it will be hot, cold, snow? What I can anticipate is to not expect a copy of Earth. Each of the six discs will have features and elements  different from the previous one. The other certainty is that it will be released January 1, 2015, exactly six months after Earth.

11.What are some bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
I listen black metal from the beginnings of the genre, but in the meantime I have played in a Classical Orchestra and jazz and Avant-garde band. The bands that have made a guide for this project are some of the most violent in the landscape, such as Marduk, Darkthrone, Mayhem, Dissection and other more melodic as Tsjuder or Sargeist, as well as Penderecki, Webern, John Zorn and traditional music for the composition. What I want is to get a personal sound that combines all the elements that I put in the game, and that is as fresh as possible and less obvious. I listen a lot of music, at all hours, I currently have the headphones Wolves In The Throne Room, but Beethoven is the next.

12.Does Occultism play any role in your music?
The occultism in our music, or rather in the overall project, is seen as symbolic associations and numerical correlate with those who are the six elements. To get an idea all discs will be composed of 6 tracks, 2 of which are instrumental for a duration of 36 minutes flat. They will come out at the exact distance of six months of each other and so on. You'll notice in the text as in later records that there are elements and symbols that will come back periodically, as the leitmotiv, which take inspiration from the occult and beyond.

13.What are some of your non musical interests?
Reading plays an important role as well as hiking in nature, without which this project would probably not have had any reason to exist (“the sky the sea, the sun, the moon, the rhythm of the season” from the title-track Dawn Of A Dark Age).

  Dawn  Of  A  Dark  Age  are  a  duo  from  Italy  that  plays  a  very  raw,  experimental  and  avant  garde  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2014  album  "The  Six  Elements  Vol.  1  Earth"  which  is  also  the  first  chapter  in  a  6  album  concept  that  will  be  released  in  between  2014-17.

  Tribal  style  beats  start  off  the  album  and  gives  the  music  a  very  ritualistic  and  shamanistic  feeling  before  going  into  a  very  fast,  raw  and  old  school  black  metal  direction  along  with  some  grim  screams  and  you  can  also  hear  some  keyboards  in  the  background  and  the  music  also  slows  down  and  adds  in  a  melodic  guitar  lead  before  returning  back  to  a  faster  direction.

  As  the  album  progresses  the  music  starts  alternating  between  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  you  can  also  hear  elements  of  thrash  metal  in  the  music  at  times  along  with  some  powerful  sounding  bass  guitars  and  the  band  always  remains  true  to  a  very  fast,  raw  and  old  school  black  metal  sound  which  they  also  mix  in  with  the  avant  garde  traces.

  After  awhile  you  can  hear  traces  of  progressive  and  folk  music  being  added  into  the  bands  heavy  and  grim  sound  and  they  also  add  acoustic  guitars  and  folk  instruments  into  certain  sections  of  their  musical  sound  as  well  as  also  keeping  the  solos  and  leads  in  a  melodic  direction  and  they  also  add  an  instrumental  on  the  album  which  also  utilizes  some  saxophones.

  After  the  instrumental  the  band  adds  in  a  more  melodic  black  metal  song  along  with  the  following  track  being  in  a  more  experimental  but  still  very  blackened  direction  with  some  thrash  influences  and  all  of  the  songs  on  the  recording  have  their  own  sound  which  events  this  album  out  as  being  very  diverse  and  original  in  sound  and  they also  make  the  vocals  sound  deeper  on  the  later  tracks  and  they  close  the  album  with  an  acoustic  and  progressive  sounding  outro.

  Dawn  Of  A   Dark  Age  show  a  great  amount  of  diversity  with  their  music  taking  the  heaviness  of  rawness  of  old  school  black  metal  and  mixing  it  with  melodic  guitar  leads  and  experimental  and  avant  garde  music  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  dark,  heavy  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark,  occult,  and  metaphysical  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Dawn  Of  A  Dark  Age  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw,  and  experimental  avant  garde  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Cold  Winter"  and  "Eurynomos  Army".  8  out  of  10.
