Antrisch/Expedition III: Renitenzpfad/AOP Records/2026 Full Length Review

 

  Germany's  Antrisch  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  an  atmospheric  and  melodic  form  of  black  metal  with  elements  of  djent,  doom  metal  and  dark  ambient  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2026  album  "Expedition  III:  Renitenzpfad"  which  will  be  released  in  March  by  AOP  Records.

  Samples  and  spoken  words  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  clean  playing  a  few  seconds  later  before  going  into  a  very  fast  and  raw  musical  direction  which  also  utilizes  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  lot  of  melody. 

  A  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  synths  also  have  the  music  more  of  an  atmospheric  feeling.  Elements  of  doom  metal  are  also  add  into  the  slower  sections  of  the  recording  and  the  album  also  adds  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  mid  tempo  sections  also  adding  in   touches  of  djent.  Some  of  the  clean  sections  also  add  in  traces  of  dark  ambient,  spoken  words  and  clean  playing  also  return  on  later  tracks  as  well  as  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  German  and  cover  the  conquistador  Lupe  de  Aguirre.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Antrisch  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Der  baskische  Wolf"  and  "Verschanzi  -  Pereneilandterror".  8  out  of  10.

Antrisch/EXPEDITION II: Die Passage/2023 Full Length Review

 

  Antrisch  are  a  band  from  Germany  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  an  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  with  some  elements  of  dark  ambient,  djent  and  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2023  album  "EXPEDITION  II:  Die  Passage".

  Field  recordings  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  clean  playing  and  spoken  word  parts  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  evolve  into  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams.  When  synths  are  utilized  they  also  bring  in  elements  of  dark  ambient  along  with  some  choirs  also  being  utilized  briefly  and  some  of t he  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can b e  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  atmospheric  sounding  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  when  they  are  utilized.  The  slower  sections  of  the  songs  are  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  doom  metal  as  well  as  the  mid  tempos  of  the  music  also  adding  in  some  djent  influences,  one  song  also  introduces  acoustic  guitars  onto  the  album  and  the  recording  also  closes  with  an  instrumental.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  German  cover  the  inner  world  and  the  relentless  forces  of  nature.   

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Antrisch  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "II  Wahnrationen  -  Saturnusparusie"  and  "IIIII  Exodus  |  Tundrataumel  -  Croziers Bürde".  8  out  of  10.

Antrisch Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?

MW: Currently we're working on our 2nd expedition while waiting for the release of the first one.

2.Recently you have released your first ep, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for on the recording?

MW: The official digital release is still to come, it's the 8th of April. Our general route of march can be labeled as Atmospheric Black Metal, but we spice it up with ambient sounds typically used for Djent, Doom and groove parts in order to broaden the horizon.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored so far with the music?

MW: Our leitmotif is the impact that the most extreme parts of the planet have on humans,  mentally as well as physically. It's kind of a stress-field between the heights of the world and the depth of man which we narrate and set to music by retelling historical expeditions.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Antrisch'?

MW: Antrisch derives from Austro-Bavarian dialect and means "eerie, strange or uncanny", a term which perfectly illustrates the very core of the band's identity.

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the ep cover?

MW: It's a still picture taken from Hans Ertl's documentary "Nanga Parbat" from 1953. The way Ertl is abstracting the rope party by filming them against the dazzling sunlight and thus turning them into shady moving spectres perfectly symbolizes what Antrisch is about.

6.Does the band have any plans to do any live shows once the pandemic ends?

MW: So far we don't have concrete plans about presenting our material live, but it's not impossible. We don't feel the urge to play live at any cost, but with the right circumstances, maybe.

7.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

MW: Our first EP will be released completely by ourselves, that's why we chose a digital release for now.We'll see what the future holds for us.

8.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of atmospheric black metal?

MW: Quite well so far. Since it is not out officially there were just a few press commentaries, but "public reactions" are yet to come. We received a quite positive echo so far.

9.When can we expect a full length and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

MW: Our general concept is tho limit the outputs. It's not our aim to release full length albums only for the sake of being full length. Currently it feels right to tell a story in five episodes. It might be possible that the songs will extend, so that we might extravagate the "EP character", but for the forthcoming expeditions this procedure is laid down.

10.What are you currently listening to nowadays?

MW: Not so much current stuff I'm afraid. I enjoy listening to the music of Jesper Kyd and Vangelis; when it comes to current Metal albums I should name Thy Catafalque's "Naiv", Grima's "Rotten Garden" and Kanonenfieber's "Menschenmühle".

11.What are some of your non musical interests?

MW: Mountain hiking, travelling, art & architecture/visiting art museums, history & prehistory

  Ambient style  soundscapes  start  off  the  ep  before  adding  some  clean  playing  onto  the  recording  before  going  into  a  very  fast  and  raw  musical  direction  which  also  uses  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Elements  of  doom  metal  can  also  be  heard  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  along  with  the  music  also  having  its  atmospheric  moments.

  Some  of  the  mid  tempo  sections  also   show  an  influence  of  djent  along  with  the  guitar  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  when  they  are  utilized  as  well  as  some  songs  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing  and  as  the  ep  progresses  a  small  amount  of  post  metal  and  shoegaze  touches  can  also  be  heard.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  German  and  cover  the  heights  of  the  world  and  the  depths  of  man.

  In  my  opinion  Antrisch  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Aufbruchsignale"  and  "Firnfeldkonfrontation".  8  out  of  10.
