Volkolak/My Blacky/Crush The Desert Records/2021 CD Review

 

  Russia's  Volkolak  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  band  moving  even  more  far  away  from  their  earlier  black  metal  style  and  focusing  more  of  an  pagan  folk  music  style  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  album  "My  Blacky"  which  was  released  by  Crush  The  Desert  Records.

  Field  recordings  and  winds  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  dark  soundscapes  a  few  seconds  later  before  adding  in  some  percussion.  Folk  instruments  are  also  utilized  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  album  while  5the  vocals  are  also  done  in  a  very  rough  yet  melodic  style  and  the  music  also  captures  the  atmosphere  of  pre  Christian  Russia.

  Some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  acoustic  guitars  are  also  utilized  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording.  Slavic  style  instruments  are  also  added  on  most  of  the  songs  along  with  each  track  also  sounding  very  different  from  each  other  as  well  as  the  music  also  having  its  ritualistic  and  tribal  moments.

  On  this  recording  Voolkolak  continue  to  expand  on  the  Slavic  pagan  folk  music  style  of  their  previous  releases.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Russian  and  cover  Heathenism  and  Ancient  Traditions  with  some  reference  to  both  Nordic  and  Slavic  Pagan  Gods.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  VOlkolak  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  pagan  folk  music,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Freedom  Or  Death"  "Valley  Of  Witches"  and  "Raven  Calling  to  The  Sky".  8  out  of  10.

Volkolak/MMII-MMIV/Crush The Desert Records/2017 Compilation ALbum Review

  Volkolak  are  a  band  from  Russia  that  has  had  material  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  has  done  albums  in  both  the  ns  pagan/black  metal  and  neo  folk  genres  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  compilation  album  "MMII - MMIV"  which  consists  of  their  2002  album  "The  Feat  Of  The  Grey  King"  2004  album  "Hail  To  The  God  Of  The  Sun"  and  a  2017  bonus  track  "Tyhe  Witch.  Ice  Hike"  and  was  released  by  Crush  Of  The  Desert  Records  and  consists  of  their  early  folk  material.

  Wind  sounds  along  with  wolves  howling  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  acoustic  guitars  a  few  seconds  later  and  the  music  adds  in  a  medieval  folk  music  feeling  and  on  the  second  track  folk  instruments  are  added  onto  the  recording  along  with  some  melodic  singing  and  some   songs  also  bring  in  female  vocals.

  Some  of  the  tracks  are  very long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  songs  also  mix  in  a  great  amount  of  drum  beats  along  with  a  few  instrumentals  and  classical  guitars  along  with  finger  picking  is  also  utilized  at  times  and  as  the  compilation  progresses  the  vocals  start  adding  in  more  aggression n and  nature  sounds  also  make  a  return  on  some  of  the  later  tracks  and  the second  album  on  this  compilation  also  continues  the  same  tradition  as the  first  recording.

  On  this  compilation  Volkolak  started  developing  their  folk  music  style  and  create  a  medeieval  pagan  atmosphere,  the  production  sounds  very  powerful  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Russian  and  cover  Russian  pride,  Slavic  and  Norse  Paganism.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  collection  from  Volkolak  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  pagan  folk  music,  you  should  check  out  this  compilation.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Odin's  Wolves"  "Witches  Valley"  "To  The  God  Of  Fire"  and  "Veles  And  The  Warrior".  8  out  of  10.

Volkolak/Ice Hike & Tales Of The Old Wolf/Crush The Desert Records/2016 CD Review

  Russia's  Volkolak  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  them  once  again  moving  away  from the  ns  black  metal  style  and  focusing  more  on  a  pagan  folk  music  style  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2016  album  "Ice  Hike  &  Tales  Of  The  Old  Wolf"  which  was  released  by  Crush  The  Desert  Records.

  Slavic  style  folk  instruments  along  with  acoustic  guitars  which  also  uses  a  good  mixture  of  full  chords  and  finger  picking  start  off  the  album  and  on  the  second  track  clean  singing vocals  are  added  into  the  music  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  medieval  and  pagan  atmosphere  and  back  up  chants  can  also  be  heard  at  times.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  decent  amount  of  flutes,  mandolins,  and  harps  and  there  is  also  a  brief  use  of  bag  pipes  and  one  track  brings  in  female  vocals  and  one  of  the  tracks  is  long  and  epic  in  length  and  while  no  heavy  parts  are  ever  utilized  a  lot  of  the  music  does  capture  the  atmosphere  of  folk  and  pagan  metal.

  Volkolak  creates  another  recording  that  continues  the  pagan/folk  music  style  they  had  established on  the  last  release,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Russian  and  cover  Slavic  and  Norse  Paganism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Volkolak  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  pagan/folk  music,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Borned  By  Volkolak"  "I  Remember"  "Winter's  Time"  and  "From  Brother  To  Enemy".  8  out  of  10.

Volkolak/Disappear/Crush The Desert Records/2012 CD Review

  Volkolak  are  a  band  from  Russia  that  started  out  as  more  of  a  national  socialist  pagan/black  metal  band  but  play  more  of  a  traditional  style  of  Slavic  folk  music  on  this  recording  and  this is  a  review  of  their  2012  album  "Disappear"  which  was  released  by  Crush  The  Desert  Records.

 Thunder  and  rain  sounds  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  Slavic  style  folk  instruments  a  few  seconds  later  before  adding  in  acoustic  guitars  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  medieval  feeling  and  after  awhile  flutes  make  their  presence  known  on  the  recording  along  with  some  clean  singing  vocals.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  have  a very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  some  of  the  tracks a re  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  as  the  album  progresses  nature  sound  can  be  heard  in  some  of  the  songs  and  there  is  also  a  great  amount  of  diversity  present  throughout  the  recording.

  Volkolak  took  a  different  route  on  this  recording  moving  away  from  the  more  black  metal  orientated  sound  of  earlier  releases  and  going  for  more  of  a  traditional  pagan  folk  music  direction  with  this  album,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Russian  and  cover  heathenism  and  Ancient  Traditions.

  In  my  opinion  this  was  a  very  great  sounding  recording  from  Volkolak  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  pagan  folk  music,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Vikings"  "Among  Dogs"  "Raven,  Folk  &  Falcon"  and  "Disappear".  8  out  of  10.
