Souillé Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the solo project?

Souillé is a French Melancholic / Instrumental black metal one-man band who stand at the crossroads between a typical black metal and an atmospheric post black.

Souillé is an exploration of the silent collapse of the soul, creating emotional highs and lows.

A blend of aggression and melody, and a delicate balance between reason and mental deterioration.

2.Recently you have released your first full length, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for on the recording?

I didn't have any specific ambitions for this project.

Basically, I just wanted to get back into extreme metal, because I hadn't played in a band for a few years and I missed it.

Souillé was supposed to be just a way to let off steam, a form of psychoanalysis, an outlet, an intimate and personal project.

As it happened, a few people who listened to my first tracks convinced me to go through with my ideas.

Then I locked up myself away and worked on it for a year, and every composition, every riff, every melody sounded like black metal, post-black metal.

In fact, everything implemented naturally , nothing was planned.

3.All of the music  is instrumental, are there any plans to use any vocals in the future?

Yes, vocals are scheduled. I'm currently working on new tracks, and the only one that's finalized features vocals.

I don't think I'll put them on all the tracks, but probably on a second album if it comes out one day, there will be more vocals than on “L'odeur du mépris.”

4.On the album you bring out the themes of psychoanalysis and existentialism, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in these topics?

In France, even though we have very good medical coverage ,  we don’t take care of mental health issues. We are in regression compares to other countries . The subject is often taboo.

We prefer to pump people full of drugs rather than actually cure the real cause from within.

It's probably a question of pharmaceutical business.

In the medical field, as in society, mental illness and disorders are too stigmatized and neglected.

To feel abandoned and alone, even though you may be surrounded by people, is an infamous feeling.

That's why this subject worries me as much as it fascinates me.

And that's what I've tried to convey through “L'odeur du mépris.”

5.I know that the bands name means 'contaminated/defiled' in French, how does this name fit in with the musical style that you play?

I think black metal music best expresses hatred, disgust, death, madness, depression, misanthropy, suicide, etc.

In short, some intimate things, personal matters, and very strong feelings.

For me, this musical style is the one that reconnects me most to the fundamental essence of my inner being.

6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

I clearly wanted to represent the thing I express myself when I compose and when I need to make music: “The feeling of emptiness.”

A tree lost in the middle of the forest seems to be more representative.

A mixture of dark and purple colors to express loneliness and despair, contrasted with a brighter color to show a glimmer of hope.

7.With this project you record everything by yourself, are you open to working with other musicians or do you prefer to work solo?

With my past experiences, my former group projects, and despite very fond memories, I was disappointed on a personal and friendly level, which I now refuse to me.

I currently prefer to compose alone, write alone, and record alone.

Even though I didn't invent anything with Souillé, I play a slightly unusual kind of music that few people want to play.

It is such an intimate music that I can't share it with anyone.

That said, I would like to incorporate passages with lyrical singing, so a collaboration is a possibility.

8.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?

The album has just been released, and Souillé is a very recent project.

Unfortunately, I don't have enough perspective to answer to the question.

In any case, the first feedback is encouraging and reflects the emotions I wanted to share.

9.Do you have any experience playing in other bands or musical projects?

Yes, I started with a black/death thrash band in the late 90s and early 2000s.

My second band was a garage punk band like The Hives.

My third band was more rock/punk ‘n’ roll, which split just before I started my Souillé project.

Between all of those, I collaborated with a few metal bands and projects.

I still have an ephemeral solo project, electronic music, which is more for my own entertainment.

10.Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician during the future?

For the moment, I can't imagine playing in a band, even though I miss terribly the symbiosis and musical sharing .

Musically, I prefer to devote to my Souillé project, develop it, share it with as much people as possible, and offer something even more elaborate.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Being extremely eclectic,  in some way, everything I've ever listened, influenced me.

So, picking one out of the bunch more than another seems very complicated .

What am I listening , in the vast world of Metal ?  my latest favorites are : A Goat as Our Shepherd, Notturno, A Different Cloud, Saor, Kraath, None.

Currently, I am in a very “Dungeon Synth/Berlin School” period, with bands such as Offermose, LANDSRAAD, Cimerion, Madis, Angst Sessions, Drifting Dots...

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Be selfish! You don't owe anything to anyone , and especially , don't expect anything from anyone.

Be passionate!

To finish on a more optimistic note, thank you for your interest.

Thank you for keeping this style of music alive and promoting it.

It was a pleasure to answer to your questions and thank you for your time and passion.

Souillé /L'odeur du mépris/WormHoleDeath Records/2025 Full Length Review

Souillé  are  a  solo  project  from  France  that  plays  a  very  instrumental  and  depressive  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2025  album  " L'odeur  du  mépris"  which  will  be  released  in  October  by  WormHoleDeath  Records.

Synths  and  voices  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier,  melodic  and  depressive  direction.  All  of  the  drum  beats  are  programmed  while  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording  and  the  solos  and  leads  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody.

When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Clean  playing  is  also  added  in  certain  sections  of  the  album  along  with  the  recording  also  adding  in  a  lot  of  post  metal  elements  as  well  as  some  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  also  having  its  atmospheric  moments.

Souillé  plays  a  style  of  post  black  metal  that  is  very  atmospheric  and  depressive  sounding  as  well  as  keeping  everything  instrumental.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  song  themes  focus  on  loneliness,  disdain  and  inner  torment.

In  my  opinion  Souillé  are  a  very  great  sounding  instrumental  and  depressive  post  black  metal  solo  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Misérable  que  je  suis"  and  "Déluge  violacé".  8  out  of  10.
