Grima/Nightside/Napalm Records/2025 Full Length Review

 

  Russia's  Grima  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  an  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2025  album  "Nightside"  which  will  be  released  on  February  28th  by  Napalm  Records.

  Clean  playing  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  folk  instruments  a  few  seconds  later  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction.  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  atmospheric  sounding  along while  synths  can  also  be  heard  at  times  and  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  mixed  in  with  a  few  death  metal  growls.

 Melodies  are  also  added  into  a  lot  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts,  clean  playing  and  folk  instruments  also  return  in  certain  sections  of  the  album  as  well  as  some  clear  singing  and  acoustic  guitars  also  being  introduced  on  later  tracks.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Paganism  and  Nature  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Grima  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Beyond  The  Dark  Horizon"  "Impending  Death  Premonition"  and  "Mist  And  Fog".  8 out  of  10.

Grima/Frostbitten/Naturmacht Productions/2022 Full Length Review

 

  Russia's  duo  Grima  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  the  atmospheric  style  of  black  metal  from  their  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2022  album  "Frostbitten"  which  will  be  released  on  July  29th  by  Naturmacht  Productions.

  Clean  playing  starts  off  the  album  while  keyboards  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording.  The  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  lot  of  blast  beats  along  with  the  vocals  being  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  growls  can  also  be  heard  at times.  When  tremolo  picking  is  utilized  they  also  give  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  along  with  the  music  having  its  atmospheric  moments  and  the  tracks  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  some  tracks  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  acoustic  guitars.  Most  of  the  music  also  brings  in  more  of  a  modern  direction  as  well  as  one  song  also  introducing  clear  vocals  onto  the  album.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  nature  and  paganism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Grima  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Giant's  Eternal  Sleep"  and  "Winter  Morning  Tower".  8  out  of  10.

Grima/Rotten Garden/Naturmacht Productions/2021 CD Review

 

    Russia's  duo  Grima  have  returned   with  a  new  recording   that   continues  the  atmospheric  style   of  black   metal   from   their   previous   releases   and   this  is  a  review  of  their  album  "Rotten  Garden'  which  will   be  released   in  2021  by  Naturmacht  Productions.

  A  very  fast  and  raw  sound  starts  off  the  album   along  with  a  great  amount   of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  When  synths  are  utilized  they  also  give  the  songs  more  of  an  atmospheric   feeling   while  the  riffs  also   add   in  a  lot  of  melody  and  the  vocals   are  mostly   high  pitched  black  metal  screams.  

  Throughout  the   recording   you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  deep  growls   can  also  be  heard  at  times.  When   guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized   they   are   done  in  a  very   melodic   style  along  with  a  brief  use  of  owls  and  clean  playing   can  also   be  heard   at  times.

  Some   of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  one  song   also  adding  in  touches  of  folk  music  as  well  as  a  brief  use  of  water  sounds,  one  of  the  songs  is  also  an  instrumental  and  as  the  album  progresses  the  synths  also  become  more  diverse. The  production   sounds   very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Siberian   nature   and  Paganism   themes.

  In  my  opinion   this   is  another  great   sounding   recording   from  Grima  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  black   metal,  you  should   check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED   TRACKS  INCLUDE  ''Morning  Comes  At  Sunset"  and  "Devotion   To  Lord".  8  out  of  10.

Grima/Will Of The Primordial/Naturmacht Productions/2019 CD Review

  Siberia's  Grima  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  the  atmospheric  style  of  black  metal  from  their  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2019  album  "Will  Of  The  Primordial"  which  will  be  released  in  August  by  Naturmacht  Productions.

  Stringed  instruments  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier,  melodic  and  atmospheric  musical  direction.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  as  well  as  the  vocals  being  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  a  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  while  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Acoustic  guitars  are  also  added  into  some  parts  of  the  recording  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  Keyboards  also  mix  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music  at  times  as  well  as  some  growls  also  being  utilized  at  times  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  couple  of  instrumentals  are  also  added  onto  the  recording,  one  track  also  brings  in  a  brief  use  of  clean  vocals.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Siberian  Nature  and  Paganism  themes.

Grima/Tales Of The Enchanted Woods/Naturmacht Productions/2017 CD Review

  Grima  are  a  duo from  the  Siberian  part  of  Russia  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  an  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  album  "Tales  Of  the  Enchanted  Woods"  which  was  released  by  Naturmacht  Productions.

  A  very  dark  and  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  melodic  guitar  leads  and  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  songs  and  after  awhile  grim  yet  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  are  added  onto  the  recording  along  with  some  deep  growls  also  being  utilized  at  times and  atmospheric  synths  are  also  used  on  some  of t he  tracks.

  Melodic  vocals  are  also  added  onto  the  recording  in  some  of  the  tracks  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  A  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic in  length  and  there  is  also  a  brief  use  of  stringed  instruments  and  the  tremolo  picking  during  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  black  metal  feeling  along  with  the  riffs  also  using a  great  amount  of  melody  and  as  the  album  progresses  female  vocals  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  they  also  bring  in  acoustic  guitars  at  times  along  with  a copule  of  the  tracks  being  all  instrumental  and  the  music  also  adds  in  progressive  rock  and  post  black  metal  touches  in  some  parts  of  the  recording  as  well  as  some  Cascadian  influences.

  Grima  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  the  atmospheric  style of  black  metal  that  was  established  on  their  previous  release,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Nature  and  Paganism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Grima  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Moon  And  Its  Shadows"  "The  Ritual"  and  "The  Shephards  of  the  Mountains  And Plains".  8  out  of  10.

Grima/Devotion To Lord/Naturmacht Records/2015 CD Review

 Grima  are  a  band  from  Russia  that  plays  an  atmospheric  and  melodic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2015  album  "Devotion  To  Lord"  which  will  be  released  on  November  28th  by  Natuurmacht  Productions.

  A  very  dark  and  distorted  yet melodic  guitar  lead  starts  off  the  album  and  after  the  intro  the  music  starts  adding  in  more  of  a  fast  and  raw  black  metal  sound  along  with  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  while  the  slower  sections  keep  the  melody  and  also  add  in  atmospheric  sounds  and  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording.

  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  black  metal  screams  and  some  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  throughout  the  recording  you  can  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  the  solos  and  leads  add  in  a  melodic  style  of  post  black  metal  and  at  times  rough  yet  melodic  vocals  can  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  some  of  the  songs.

  The  screams  also  get  more  high  pitched  at  times  in  some  parts  of  the  songs  while  the  clean  parts  give  the  music  more  of  a  progressive  edge  and  the  heavy  guitar  riffs  also  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  and  as  the  album progresses  more  traditional  clean  singing  and  deep  growls  can  be  heard  along  with  a  small  amount  of  acoustic  guitars  and  they  music  also  adds  in  a  touch  of  Cascadian  elements  and  some  songs  also  add  in  a  small  amount  of  synths.

  Grima  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  modern,  melodic  and  atmospheric  sounding  while  also  having  a  progressive  edge  at  times,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  nature  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Grima  are  a  very  great  sounding  melodic  and  atmospheric  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Open  The  Gates  Will  Return  the  Only  Cold"  "Devotion  TO  Lord"  and  "Blood  On  the  Snow".  8  out  of  10.
