The Projectionist/The Stench Of Amalthia/Moribund Records/2020 CD Review

  Alberta,  Canada's  The  Projectionist  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  the  raw  and  depressive  style  of  black  metal  from  their  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020 album  "The  Stench  Of  Amalthia"  which  will  be  released  in  April  by  Moribund  Records.

  Dark  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  synths  a  few  seconds  second  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  yet  depressive  black  metal  screams.  At  times  the  music  also  captures  the  atmosphere  of  a  classic  horror  movie  soundtrack  along  with  all  of  the  tracks  also  adding  in  some  spoken  word  parts.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  At  times  the  vocals  also  get  more  high  pitched  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies  and  the  tracks  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  Some  of  the  riffing  also  shows  an  influence  of  death  metal  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  being  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  style  when  they  are  utilized.  Demonic  growls  can  also  be  heard  briefly  as  well  as  a  couple  of  tracks  also  introducing  clean  male  and  female  vocals  onto  the  recording. 

  Some  of  the  songs  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  when  pianos  are  added  onto  the  music  they  also  give  the  recording  more  of  an  avant  garde  feeling  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard,  the  album  also  closes  with  a  cover  of  Operation  Winter  Mist's  "Death  And  Honor".  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  a  concept  album  based  upon  an  aging,  dying  former  Film  noire  starlet  named  Amalthia  Grahame,  isolated  in  her  palatial  home  and  the  horrors  that  she  faces. 

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  The  Projectionist  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw,  depressive  and  horror  themes  black  metal,  you  should  check  out this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Sepulchral  Oak  Door"  "The  Weakening"  "Flated"  and  "Forsaken  O'Clock".  8/5  out  of  10.

The Projectionist/Visits From The Nighthag Part 2/Appalachian Noise Records/2019 Full Length Review

  Canada/U.S.A's  The  Projectionist  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  the  depressive  style  of  black  metal  from  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2019  album  "Visits  From  the  Nighthag  Part  2"  which  will  be  released  in  June  by  Appalachian  Noise  Records.

  Clean  playing  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  melodic  chanting  also  being  used  briefly  before  going  into  a  heavier  musical  direction.  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  yet  depressive  black  metal  screams  along  with  a  couple  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  at  times.

  Depressive  cries  and  the  sounds  of  witch  laughter  are  also  used  briefly  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them,  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

  Melodies  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  When  guitar  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  and  as  the  album  progresses  synths  and  piano's  are  also  added  onto  the  recording.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  continue  the  concept  about  the  Nighthag  along  with  a  good  amount  of  occult  references.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  The  Nighthag  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  depressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "In  Dormancy  Where  Ripe  Targets  Lay"  "The  Globe  Theater"  and  "Bandages  Over  Boards".  8  out  of  10.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  The  Projectionist  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw  and  depressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "A  Saw  To  Dissolve  All  Travel"  and  "Bewitching  Unto  Death".  8  out  of  10.

  The  Projectionist  are  an  international  band  with  members  from  both  Canada  and  the  United  States  that  plays  a  very  raw  and depressive  form  of  satanic  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  album  "Exalted  Solitude"  which  will  be  released  on April  20th  as  a  joint  effort  between  Appalachian  Noise  and  The  True  Plague  Records.

 Avant  garde  sounds  start  off  the  album  and  a  few  seconds  later  melodic  riffing  and  grim  yet  depressive  black  metal  screams  are  added  onto  the  recording  along  with  the  music  getting  heavier  and  when  guitar  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion  and  the  solos  and  leads  also  use  a  great  amount  of melody.

  Spoken  word  parts  can  be  heard  briefly  and  when  the  music  speeds  up a  decent amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  along  with  a  good  portion  of  the  tracks  being  along  and  epic  in  length  and  the  songs  also  bring  in a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  the  tremolo  picking  also  gives  the  songs  a  more  raw  feeling  and  one  track  brings  in  classical  guitars  and  demonic  growls a re  also  used  briefly.

  The  Projectionist  plays  a  style of  black  metal that  is  very  raw  and  depressive  sounding  while  also  having  an  occult  atmosphere,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark,  hateful,  depressive,  satanic  and  occult  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  sounding  from  The  Projectionist  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw  and  depressive  satanic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Sucking  A  Most  Hateful Claustram"  "If  Erased,  So Fertile  Outright"  "Chapel  Of  Astaroth"  and  "Zarathustra".  8  out  of  10.

  The  Projectionst  are  a  band  with  members  from  both  the  United  States  and  Canada  that have  had  an  album  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  very  raw  and  depressive  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2016  album  "Poisonous  Disengagement".

  A  very  heavy  and  raw  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  high  pitched  depressive  black  metal  screams  and  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording  and  the  riffs  also  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies.

  During  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  and  the  music  also  brings  in  a  great  amount  of  90's  second  wave  influences  and  the  solos  and  lead are  also  done  in  a  very  raw  and  melodic  style  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  Clean  guitars  along  with  whispers  are  also used  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording and  some  of  the  tracks  are  long  and  epic  in  length  and  some  songs  also  bring  in  spoken  vocals  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  synths  can  be  heard  and  they  close  the  album  with  a  cover  of  Twisted  Sister's  "Under  The  Blade".

  The  Projectionist  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  the  raw  and  depressive  style  of  black  metal  from t heir  previous  release,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  depressive  themes.

  Distorted  sounds  start  off  the  album  before  adding  in  guitars  and  you  can  also  hear  voices  in  the  background  and  after  awhile  grim  yet  depressive  black  metal  screams  are  added  onto  the  recording  and  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  and  a  couple  of  the t racks are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Demonic  growls  can  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  the  tremolo picking  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  black  metal  feeling  and as  the  album  progresses  clean  guitars  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  all  of  the  songs  stick  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  paced  musical  direction  while  also  being  very  diverse  and  different  from  each  other  and  when  guitar  leads  are  utilized  they  stick  to  a  more  melodic  style.

  The  Projectionist  plays  a  style  of  depressive  black  metal that  can  be  very  raw  at times  while  also  bringing  in  a  great  amount  of  diversity,  the  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  depressive  themes.

  In  my  opinion  The  Projectionist  are  a very  great  sounding  raw  and  depressive  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,you  should  check out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Automation  Stare" and  "Imagined  Fortress  Made  To  Give  Way".  8  out  of  10.
