Depths Of Tartarus Interview

1. Can you give us a brief history of the band.

Well Depths Of Tartarus was formed by Syclan and Keres in the early year of 2007. And when I (Munihist) first joined there was actually a key board player. And I actually started out as the drummer. Then we kicked out the key board player and I moved to guitar as moved to our new drummer Cliff. That was the line up we recorded Protogonos with. Then we kicked him out for mutual reasons and got Archeron, who actually just left the band. So as of right now we are looking for a drummer. And I (Munihist) will more then likely be doing drums again on the next album.

2. Listening to your c.d I noticed a lot of riffs you used kind of reminded me of classic death metal! Would you say death metal is a big influence on the music.

I dont know about our first album, but our newer stuff has a Morbid Angel tint to it, I guess you could say. But as far as our first album goes I dont think that any of my leads have any Death Metal influence. But Syclan's vocals definitely have certain dynamics that could turn either way.

3. Have you experienced any line up changes.

Well I think the description of our band's history covers that one heh.

4. What role does Greek Mythology play in your music.

Well its the basis of all the lyrics first of all. And to a certain extent it is also the basis for the writing. We are always influenced by old Greek battles, myths, and lore and we try to bring that out in music.

5. Is there any Satanic, Occult, Left Hand Path or Anti-Christian philosophies that the band follows.

We are definitely not for Christianity or anything like that. But we chose not to be a satanic band because its so dumb haha. There are 500 million fucking bands out there that think they know something about true evil. They act like tough shit and talk more shit over myspace haha. And we are all about old time wars and having a good time with metal and some beers!

6. What are some of the band's main influences.

AH! Destroyer 666, DarkThrone, Enslaved, Vio-Lence, Morbid Angel, and 43289753 million other bands. Hah!

7. What are you listening to these days and what bands would you recommend.

Myself I have been into some more classic Death Metal lately. For recommendations I would just ask Fenriz from Darkthrone haha.

8. Are there any good books that you would recommend.

Any good history books are awesome, depending on what you're into. But I like Michael Crichton lately myself haha.

9. How would you describe the black metal scene in Portland or the whole Pacific Northwest area.

I think Portland is a fucking badass city and there are so many cool true metal heads here. And we have awesome bands.But it can also be dramatic from time to time like anywhere else hah. Its better just to sit in your room and listen to records, drink beer, and play Starcraft!

10. Do you have any more touring plans.

No, not at the moment.

Depths Of Tararus- Portoagonos/Dark Forest Productions/ 2008 CD Review

Depths Of Tartarus are a 4 piece band hailing from Portland, Oregon that plays a melodic and raw form of black metal that has a thrashy death metal edge and this is their first release.

Drums on this recording are slow at times with a lot of technical parts and then they evolve into blast beats which are really fast, while the bass playing sounds really dark and utilizes a lot of speed riffs that sound suitable for the guitar rhythms and drums.

Guitar rhythms on this recording are very melodic and infuse the best elements of thrash, death and black metal and there is a good mixture of mid paced and fast riffs, while the guitar leads seem to mix some classic metal guitar solos with some more modern influences that keep the energy going and then there are some parts that utilize classical riffs when the music is in a Greek war mode.

Vocals on this cd are high pitched black metal screams that seem to combine three decades of extreme metal vocals and there are the occasional death metal growls. as for the lyrics on this recording they deal a lot with Greek Mythology and then there is a song called "Abraxas Of War" which pays homage to this almighty Persian Deity from back when Persia was dominated by the Indo-Aryan race and there is also an instrumental that utilizes a lot of Middle Eastern sounding instruments.

Production on this recording which was recorded at Papst Palace from Jan to Mar 2008 and mastered at Dark Forest Studios during Mar 2008 sounds really good and you can hear all of the instruments.
In my opinion this a a really good debut for a band that was only formed during 2007 and they have a lot of talent and they play a style that is different than most bands out there and I would recommend this release to old school fans as well as new. I have also seen this band live and they put on a brutal show.

Recommended tracks on this recording are "Enslaved Below Hades", and "Argus Panoptes" a highly recommended release.

Depths Of Tarturus, Ceremonial Castings, Satan’s Host, Orgy For Satan November 11, 2008 Old Cur

Opening up this show on a Tuesday at Old Curtis Tavern in Denver, Co was Depths Of Tartarus. I would describe their music as fast form of black metal mixed with some thrash influence's. Drums were very fast and brutal with a lot of blast beats, while the bass playing had a lot of rhythm mixed with a lot of fast riffs. Guitars were very professional sounding with a lot of brutal black metal riffs that combined both modern and old school influences with some melodic guitar solos. I would describe their vocals as traditional black metal screams with some occasional death metal grows. As far as the stage presence there was the metal spikes and corpse paint and the band closed the show with a cover of Inquisition's " Crush The Jewish Prophet", In my opinion their version did not seem as powerful as the original and the vocals kind of reminded me of a younger David Vincent doing the vocals, other than that they put on a real good show and were the most brutal band of the night.

Next up on the stage were Washington State's Ceremonial Castings and they played a very dark and melodic form of symphonic black metal. Drums were fast with some blast beats and they would slow down at times to capture the melodic feel of the music. Keyboards were very dark and depressing sounding and captured the ambiance of the music perfectly. There was no bass guitar present so the guitar player had to cover both the rhythm's and leads of the music and he combined a lot of fast black metal riffs with some slow and doomy parts, while the solos were very melodic and epic. Vocals were black metal screams mixed with some occasional clean singing. As with the opening band Ceremonial Castings also had a very good stage presence.

Next up were Denver legends Satan's Host. This was their first show with their new line up and I would describe their music as a Satanic form of black/death with a lot of melody. Drums were very professional and tight sounding with a lot of blast beats, some slow parts mixed with a lot of variety and the drummer sounded like he really prepared for his first show with Satan's Host. As for the bass playing it was the strongest i have ever heard from this band and they combined a lot of fast and melodic riffs that mixed both Old School and Modern metal. Guitars were very dark and evil sounding and you could hear 4 decades of metal in the rhythm's and the solos could blow away any of the musicians in Colorado with it's dark and sinister sound. Vocals were black metal screams mixed with some death metal influences and at times they sounded ritualistic. While the band did not have the corpse paint and spikes like the opening bands they still had a dark image and the singer were his cloak on stage and at times looked like he was trying to conjure a demon.

Headlining the show was Denver's own Orgy For Satan. Despite the name their music was not that dark and was it was mostly grindcore with a couple of black metal songs. Drums were very fast and basic with a lot of blast beats and they were the highlight of music while the bass guitars seemed to follow the guitars and drums and and it seemed like there was a few technical problems. Guitars were all rhythms with no guitar solos and the riffs were fast and simplistic and other than when the band switched from black metal there was not a lot of variety. Vocals were mostly death/ grind growls with some occasional black metal screams and when they played their last song Creepy Chris came up and did quest vocals and in my opinion he had some better growls than there regular singer and he seemed more crazy and into the music than the rest of the guys. While Orgy For Satan were not a bad band they seemed weak in comparison with the rest of the bands that played that night and there was no stage presence and they have not seemed to add any newer influence's since their last show and album in 2001.I would say this show was a really good show and I hope we get more shows like this in Colorado.
