  Russia's  solo  project  Astarium  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  an  atmospheric,  old  school,  raw  and  symphonic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2023  album  "The  Ghost  Kings"  which  was  released  by  Acid  Visions.

  Ambient  style  synths  start  off  the  album  and  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times.  The  music  also  has  its  symphonic  moments  while  the  album  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  era  as  well as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  along  with  a  few  growls  while  the faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in a   great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast beats  which  also  gives  the  album  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  atmospheric  sounding  and  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody,  spoken  word  parts  are  also  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  album.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  old  school  while  the  lyrics  cover  Satanism,  Occultism,  Evil,  Darkness  and  Death  themes.     

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Astarium  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric,  old  school,  raw  and  symphonic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Cadaveric  Invasion"  "Possessed  By  Demon"  and  "Return  To  Satanism".  8  out  of  10.

  Russia's  solo  project  Astarium  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  more  of  an  ambient,  atmospheric,  old  school  and  symphonic  style  of  black  metal  with  some  neo-classical  touches  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2022  single  "Furies"  which  was  released  as  a  joint  effort  between  NitroAtmosfericum  Records  and  Masters  Of  Kaos.

  Ritualistic  chants  and  dark  soundscapes  start  off  the  track  which  is  also  over  16  minutes  in  length  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction.  When  synths  are  added  into  the  music  they  also b ring  in  some  ambient,  neo-classical  and  symphonic  elements  while  the  song  also  has  its  atmospheric  moments.

  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast b eats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  song  more  of  a  raw  feeling  along  with  the  vocals  being  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams.

  A  lot  of  the  music  is  also  very  heavily  influenced  by  the  90's  era  along  with  the  song  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  some  of t he  drum b eats  also  being  programmed.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  old  school  while  the  lyrics  cover  Occultism  and  UFO  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  track  from  Astarium  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  ambient,  atmospheric,  old  school  and  symphonic  black  metal  with  some  neo-classical  touches,  you  should  check  out  this  single.  8  out  of  10.

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  ep  between  Russia's  Astarium  and  Fire  Messiah  which  was  released  as  a  joint  effort  between  More  Hate  Productions  and  Snow  Wolf  Records  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  solo  project  Astarium  who  returns  with  an  atmospheric  and  old  school  form  of  symphonic  black  metal.

  His  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  very  fast  and  raw  sound  which  also  utilizes  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Symphonic  elements  are  also  added  into  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  black  metal  screams  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts,  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  at  times.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  old  school  and  the  lyrics  cover  Norse  Paganism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Astarium  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  epic  symphonic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  his  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Echo  Of  Niflheim".

  Next  up  is  Fire  Messiah  a  solo  project  that  plays  a  punk  influenced  form  of  raw  black  metal  with  some  symphonic  touches.

  His  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  his  side  of  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  some  symphonic  sounding  keyboards  also  being  added  into  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  the  music  also  adding  in  touches  of  punk  at  times.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  and  the  lyrics  cover  the  inevitable  reckoning,  death  and  loss  of  humanity  in  this  world.

  In  my  opinion  Fire  messiah  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw  and  symphonic  black  metal  solo  project  with  elements  of  punk  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  his  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Flirting  With  the  End".

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  symphonic  black  metal.  8  out  of  10.

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  ep  between  Russia's  solo  projects  Astarium  and  Necropus  called  "Frozen  In  Blood"  which  was  released  in  2021  as  a  joint  effort  between  NitroAtmosfericum  Records  and  Wings  Of  Destruction  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Astarium  who  returns  with  an  epic  form  of  symphonic  black  metal.

  His  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  very  heavy  and  symphonic  sound  along  with  some  war  and  battle  samples  a  few  seconds  later.  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  black  metal  screams  while  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly,  melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  as  well  as  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  and  the  lyrics  cover  war  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  track  from  Astarium  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  epic  symphonic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  his  side  of  the  split.

  Next  up  is  Necropus  a  solo  project  that  plays  a  Nordic  inspired  form  of  old  school  black  metal.

  His  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  dark  yet  heavy  riffing  while  the  music  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  era.  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  along  with  some  clear  singing  also  being  utilized  briefly  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  Paganism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Necropus  are  a  very  great  sounding  old  school  black  metal  solo  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  his  side  of  the  split.

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  symphonic  and  old  school  black  metal.  8  out  of  10.

  This  is  a  review  of  another  recording  from  Russia's  solo  project  Astarium  that  shows  him  moving  away  from  the  black  metal  style  of  previous  releases  and  goes  for  an  epic  mixture  of  dungeon  synth,  neo-classical  and  ambient  with  elements  of  darkwave  and  medieval  folk  music  and  the  album  was  released  on  cassette  in  2021  by  Heimat  Der  Katastrophe  and  called  "Into  The  Dungeon's  Domain".

  Ambient  style  synths  start  off  the  album  while  also  adding  in  some  elements  of  medieval  folk  music  elements  which  also  gives  the  songs  the  atmosphere  of  a  fantasy  movie  soundtrack.  All  of  the  drum  beats  are  also  programmed  along  with  some  of  the  songs  going  into  more  of  a  dungeon  style  direction.

  At  times  the  music  also  adds  in  the  more  tragic  side  of  darkwave  while  all  of  the  songs  are  also  instrumentals.  All  of  the  tracks  also  sound  very  different  from  each  other  along  with  the  synths  also  adding  in  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys  and  some  songs  also  bring  in  a  more  epic  neo-classical  style.

  On  this  recording  Astarium  moves  away  from  the  black  metal  style  that  he  is  known  for  and  goes  more  for  a  mixture  of  ambient,  dungeon  synth  and  neo-classical  as  well  as  keeping  everything  instrumental  while  the  production  sounds  very  dark.

  Dark  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  heavy  riffing  and  symphonic  elements  a  few  seconds  later.  All  of  the  drum  beats  are  also  programmed  while  spoken  word  parts  can  also be  heard  on  a  couple  of  songs  as  well  as  the  vocals  being  mostly  grim  black  metal  screams  and  the  synths  also  add  in  touches  of  ambient.

  Russia's  solo  project  Astarium  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  the  symphonic  and  atmospheric  style  of  occult  black  metal  from  his  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2020  single  "Dragon  Of  Wallachia"  which  was  released  by  Skaventhrone.

  Dark  soundscapes  start  off  the  ep  along  with  some  grim  black  metal  screams  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  takes  the  music  into  more  of  a  heavier  direction.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  and  the  symphonic  elements  are  also  added  into  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music.

  Spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly  while  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  when  the  music  speeds  up.  Sounds  of  torture  can  also  be  heard  briefly  along  with  the  second  track  being  an  instrumental  which  also  shows  some  influences  from  ambient,  dungeon  synth  and  folk  music. 

  On  this  recording  Astarium  brings  in  a  heavy  symphonic  black  metal  track  an  an  ambient  style  instrumental.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  based  upon  Vlad  Tepes.

Astarium/Mesmerizing Tentacles/2018 Single Review

  Russia's  solo  project  Astarium  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  more  of  a  Lovecraft  themed  symphonic  black  metal  style  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  self  released  2018  single  "Mesmerizing  Tentacles".

  A  very  powerful  bass  guitar  sound  starts  off  the  single  before  going  into  more  of  a  raw,  avant  garde  and  symphonic  direction  which  also  introduces  grim  black  metal  screams  and  guttural  yet  demonic  vocals  into  the  recording.  The  song  is  also  divided  into  4  different  chapters  along  with  some  elements  of  noise.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  while  the  song  also  brings  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  part.  Tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  during  the  faster  sections  of  the  music  as  well  as  some  melody  being  added  into  the  guitar  riffing.  The  production  while  the  lyrics  are  based  upon  the  writings  of  H.P  Lovecraft.

  This  is  a  review  of  another  recording  from  Russia's  solo  project  Astarium  which  shows  the  music  moving  away  from  symphonic  black  metal  and  going  into  more  of  a  sci-fi  ambient  direction  and  the  demo  is  called  Nekrocosmo:  Anabiosis"  and  was  released  by  Wolfmond  Production.

  Field  recordings  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  ambient  style  synths  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  mixes  in  elements  of  neo-classical  and  dungeon  synth  while  also  adding  in  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys  as  well  as  most  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  At  times  the  music  captures  the  atmosphere  of  a  science  fiction  film  while  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  drones  along  with  some  programmed  beats  also  being  added  into  some  parts  of  the  songs  as  well  as  the  album  also  having its  cinematic  moments  and  all  of  the  tracks  are  instrumental  and  as  the  album  progresses  the  music  starts  getting  more  diverse.

  On  this  recording  Astarium  moves  away  from  the  symphonic  style  of  black  metal  that  he  is  known  for  and  creates  an  album  that  is  more  in  the  sci-fi  vein  of  dark  ambient  while  also  having  some  dungeon  synth  and  neo-classical  elements  as  well  as  keeping  everything  instrumental  and  the  production  sounds  very  dark.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Astarium  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  sci-fi  orientated  ambient,  you  should  check  out  this  demo.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Pulse  Of  Kali  Yuga"  "Eternal  Occultation"  and  "Philosophy  Of  Black  Hole".  8  out  of  10.

Astarium/Spasm Of Charity/Radiation Of Happiness/Marbe Negre/2018 Collaboration Album Review

  Astarium  are  a  solo  project  from  Russia  that  has  had  plenty  of  material  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  teams  up  with  Spasm  Of  Charity  another  solo  project  to  create  a  recording  that  mixes  symphonic  black  metal,  drone,  dark ambient  and  neo-classical  together  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  collaboration  album  "Radiation  of  Happiness"  which  was  released  by  Marbe  Negre.

  Drones  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  dark  soundscapes  a  few  seconds  later  while  also  mixing  in  elements  of  neo-classical  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  an  avant  garde  and  experimental  feeling  along  with  some  grim  black  metal  screams  also  being  utilized  at  times  and  most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  When  synths  are  utilized  they  bring  in  elements  of  black  metal  while  the  music  also  has  its  symphonic  moments  along  with  some  samples  also  being  utilized  at  times  along  with  all  of  the  tracks  sounding  very  different  from  each  other  as  well  as  the  music  also  evoking  a  ritualistic  atmosphere  in  some  parts  of  the  recording.

  On  this  recording  Astarium  moves  way  from  his  symphonic  black  metal  style  while  still  incorporating  that  influence  along  with  some  neo classical  elements  and  mixes  it  with  Spasm  Of  Charity's  dark  ambient/drone  style  to  create  something  very  ritualistic  and  original  sounding,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness,  death  and  eternity  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  collaboration  from  Astarium  and  Spasm  Of  Charity  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black  metal,  neo-classical,  dark  ambient  and  drone,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "And  Grace  Will  Be  Shed"  and  "Through  Burning  Veins  Of  The  Creator".  8  out  of  10.

Astarium/Drum-Ghoul/Symbol Of Domination Productions/More hate Productions/2017 CD Review

  Russia's  solo  project  Astarium  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  that continues  his  symphonic  style  of  occult  black  metal from  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2017  album  "Drum-Ghoul"  which  was  released  as  a  joint  effort  between  Symbol Of  Domination  and  More  Hate  Productions.

  Soundscapes  and  field  recordings  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  melodic  guitar  leads  and  symphonic  sounding  synths  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  mixes  in  elements  of  ambient  and  after  a  few  minutes  heavy  guitar  riffs  and  drum  beats  are  added  onto  the  recording  along  with  some  grim  black  metal vocals.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful sound  to  them  while  all  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  riffs  also  utilize  a  great  amount  of  melody  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  when  tremolo picking  is  utilized  it  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

  Astarium  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  his  symphonic  and  ambient  style  of  occult  black  metal  from  previous  releases,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Darkness,  Eternity,  Death  and  Occultism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Astarium  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  symphonic,  ambient  and  occult  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Dread  Asylum"  and  "Pernicious  Elixer".  8  out  of  10.

Burnt/Astarium/Scolopendra Cingulata/Gnosis Of Death/Narcoleptica Productions/2016 Split CD Review

 This  is  a  review  of  a  3  way  split  album  between  Russia's  Burnt,  Astarium  and  Scolopendra  Cingulata  called  "Gnosis  Of  Death"  which  was  released  in  2016  by  Narcoleptica  Productions  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Burnt  a  band  that  plays  a  very  raw  and  keyboard form  of  black  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  ambient  style  keyboards  and  after  the  intro  the  music  goes  into  a  very  fast  and  raw  direction  that  also  uses  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  along  with  the  vocals  being  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.


  Keyboards  also  mix  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music  at  times  along  with  the  music  being  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  mid  90's  while  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  melodies  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  and  acoustic  guitars  are  also  used  briefly.

  Burnt  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  goes  back  to  the  earlier  days  of  the  genre  where  they  started  mixing  keyboards  into  the  music  while  also  capturing  the  raw  feeling  of  those  days  which  has  been  lost  over  the  years,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  depressive  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Burnt  are  a  ery  great  sounding  old  school  raw  and  atmospheric  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Dead  People"  and  "Suicide".

  Next  up  is  Astarium  continuing  his  symphonic  style  of  occult  black  metal.

  His  side  of  te  split  starts  out  with  ritualistic  and  demonic  voices  before  adding  in  more  of  a  symphonic  style  and  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  his  side  of  the  recording  and  on  th  second  the  music  gets  heavier  while  mixing  the  symphonic  elements.

  During  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  both  the  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  give  the  songs  a  more  raw  feeling  while  the  vocals  use  both  grim  and  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  riffs  also  using  a  decent  amount  of  melody  and  a  couple  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the solos  and  leads  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion.

  Astarium  creates  another  recording  that  is  also  in  the  occult  style  of  occult  black  metal,  the  production  sounds  very  raw  yet  heavy  at  the  same  time  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness  and  occultism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Astarium  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  occult  or  symphonic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Spirits  Of  The  Dead".

  Closing  the  split  is  Scolopendra  Cingulata  another  band  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  raw  form  of  black  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  spoken  word  samples  before  going  into  a  more  heavier  and  melodic  musical  direction  where  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on their  side  of  the  recording  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard.

  Vocals  are  mostly  grim   black  metal  screams  along  with thee  solos  and  leads  adding  in  a  melodic  style  and  the  tremolo  picking  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  and  90's  second  wave  feeling  and  atmospheric  keyboards  can  also  be  heard  in  the  background  briefly  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  their  last  track  is  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  in  the  instrumental  ambient  direction.

  On  this  recording  Scolpendra  Cingulata  takes  the  raw  black  metal  style  and  mixes  in  more  keyboards  to  add  something  new  to  their  music,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Russian  and  cover  history,  war  and  literature  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Scolopendra  Cingulata  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Rassvett".

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  Russian  black  metal.  8  out  of  10.

  Russia's  solo  project  Astarium  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  that  continues  the  symphonic  style  of  occult  black  metal  from  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2016  ep  "Epoch  Of  Tyrants"  which  was  released  by  More  Hate  Productions.

  Ocean  sounds  along  with  some  synths  and  clean  guitars  start  off  the  ep  and  after  awhile  programmed  beats  are  added  onto  the  recording  and  on  the  second  track  the  music  goes  into  more  of  a  heavier  and  symphonic  direction  as  well  as  introducing  melodic  guitar  leads  onto the  recording.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  along  with  the  tremolo  picking  giving  the  songs  a  more  raw  feeling  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal screams  with  soem  grim  touches  and  the  music  is  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  you  can  also  hear   all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording  and  some  songs  also  bring  in  a  small  amount  of  war  samples  and  a  couple  of  the  tracks  arevery  long  and  epic  in  length  as  well  as  bringing  in  a  few instrumnetals.

  Astarium  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  the  symphonic  style  of  occult  black  metal  from  previous  releeaases,  the  production  sounds  very  powerful  while  the  lyrics  cover  War,  Satanism  and  Occultism  themes.

  Astarium  are  a solo  project  from  Russia  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays a  symphonic  form  of  occult  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2015  album  "Nekrocosmo:  Nocturnal  Kali  Yuga"  which  was  released by  Metallic  Media.

  Dark  avant  garde  sounds  start  off  the  album along  with  some  drumbeats  before  adding  in  a  more  heavy  and  atmospheric  sound  that  also  uses  symphonic  synths,  demonic growls  and  grim  black  metal  screams  and  after  awhile  the  music  speeds  up  a  bit  and  adds  in a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  and  the  music  goes  for  the  more  underground  90's  symphonic  sound.

  When  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  in  a  very  melodic  musical  direction  and  some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  at  times  you  can  hear  ethnic  instruments  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  faster  sections  displaying  more  of  a  raw  black  metal  style and  as  the album  progresses  an  instrumental  track  and  another  song  that  brings  in  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing  are  added  onto  the  recording.

  Astarium creates  another  symphonic  black  metal  album  that  stays  away  from  the  more  commercial  side  of  the  genre  and  also  brings  in  a  very  grim  and  evil  atmosphere,  the  production sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness,  eternity,  death,  evil  and  occult  themes. 

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Astarium  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  the  darker  side  of  symphonic  black  metal,  you should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS INCLUDE  "Lyrian  Selection"  "Dance  Of  The  Agony"  and  "Back  To  Katuar".  8  out  of  10.

Astarium Interview

1.      1. Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the musical project these days?
Astarium feels most powerfully at moment. Preparation of new material and work with records are going constantly. I do everything alone, unfortunately, this fact affects “tempo” of recording. I understand that time is playing not by my side and many musical ideas are remaining still unrealized. It  lashes me to work on the project with the doubled force.

2. In the last year alone you have released an ep, 2 demo's and a single, how would you describe the musical sound of the newer material and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?
Sound becomes better and better, because my "baggage of recording, mixing and mastering" is growing with each new release, like example of that can be my last EP “Nekrocosmo: Demiurge”. But I leave opportunity to make experiments for myself, so for example the demo of "Reverie" was recorded on a dictophone, with all that it implies. Also, at mixing of tracks from single "Chthonian Miasma" I used receptions new for myself.

3. In the earlier years while you still released a good amount of material it has not been as much as the last few years, do you feel you have gotten a lot more dedicated to creating music a lot more over the years?
Astarium is autobiographical project. Many events became decisive for me during some last years. Some of it already found, and some else will find a musical embodiment in future. I don't represent life without music, think, that it will lose meaning.

4. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects you explore with your newer music?
The lyrics remains invariable - mysticism, occultism and mights of the nature. However recently I began to pay more attention to cosmic themes.

5. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Astarium'?
In far 2005 I wanted to call my new project - Astaroth , but, having discovered abundance of groups with such name, I had to include imagination. So there was a name - Astarium. Music always comes to mind suddenly. It is senseless to sit and squeeze out something from mind, inspiration - is an unexpected muse. I think that it is something incomprehensible for human brains.

6. With this project you record everything by yourself, have you ever worked with any musicians on other projects?
In 2009 I have recorded vocal for some songs of dark-wave/ambient projects Ultimaratio and Solaris, also took guest part with clear voice for track of Die Entweihung "Sign of the Wolf". Before creation of Astarium I has played the role of guitarist and vocalist in some local bands (end of 90th - beginning of 2000). Now due to the lack of free time, I don't participate in any side projects and try to spend all forces for Astarium.

7. A couple of years back you had released a cassette  where you did Satanic Warmaster, Burzum, Graveland and Evil covers, what was the decision behind during your own version of these tracks?
The idea about creation of this release became unexpected. Simply, I thought how many bands uses phrase “black metal” in the names of tracks… and idea to make minion with cover-versions was born. Tracks were not difficult for pick out and orchestral arrangements were born very easy (it, coming back, to a question about inspiration). I hope that listeners received as much pleasures from this material as I.

8. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?
First of all, I play for myself, and that someone else is listened my music, of course pleases me. I receive many messages from listeners from around the world. And it is cool! It is especially pleasant to know that there are people who collect different editions of Astarium’s stuffs.

9. When can we expect another full length album and also where do you see yourself heading into as a musician in the future?
New album will be out on CD to the end of spring in USA and Russia and will become continuation of the “Nekrocosmo” series, begun by last year's EP. Material will represent symphonic black metal, but with small slope to avant-garde. Tracks were created since 2002 till 2014. My plans are: not to recede from the classical black metal tendencies and to find more time and forces for works in ambient genre.

10. What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
About influences, I don't know what to say… May be ambient Ildjarn (!!!???). Last year I’ve listened some materials of Rostorchester, Grausamkeit and Hruodolf, I like this hordes. Also bands for ages are Burzum, Darkthrone, Abigor, Kataxu, Nokturnal Mortum, Graveland, Absurd, Eisenwinter.

11. How would you describe your views on Satanism and Occultism?
I can call myself Satanist because my phylosophy is directly tied with my ego. I very respectfully refer to forces of nature. About occultism I can tell just one, that very high-powered preparation is needed for understanding essence of it. It is true, both from the point of view of knowledge, and from the moral point of view.
