Mortis Mutilati/Death Worshippers/2026 Full Length Review

 

  France's  Mortis  Mutilati  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  an  atmospheric  and  depressive  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  reelased  album  "Death  Worshippers"  which  will  be  released  in  2026.

  A  very  fast  and  raw  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast beats.  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  yet  depressive  sounding  black  metal  screams  mixed  in  with  a  few  growls  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  the  music  also  has  its  atmospheric  moments.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  some  keyboards  also  being  utilized  at  times.

   Some  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing  and  acoustic  guitars  along  with  some  clear  singing  also  being  utilized  in  certain  sections  of  the  album  and  some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length, as  the  album  progresses  spoken  words  are  also  introduced.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  death  themes.  

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Mortis  Mutilati  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  and  depressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Stillborn  Chorus"  'The  Macabre  of  Skin  And  Flesh"  and  "Post-Mortem".  8 out  of  10.

Mortis Mutilati/The Fate Of Flight 800/2020 CD Review

 
  France's  Mortis  Mutilati  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  the  funeral  style  of  black  metal  from  their  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2020  album  "The  Fate  Of  Flight  800"  which  will  be  released  in  September.

  Clean  playing  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  musical  direction  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  depressive  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  bringing  in  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic style  while  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Female  vocals  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Dark  sounding  melodies  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  one  track  also  introducing  acoustic  guitars  onto  the  recording.  Spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly  as  well  as  the  tremolo  picking  also  giving  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  when  it  is  finally  utilized,  one  of  the  tracks  is  also  an  instrumental  and  as  the  album  progresses  cello's  and  synths  can  be  heard  briefly  and  the  vocals  also  get  deeper  sounding  at  times.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  a  concept  album  based  upon  Flight  800  and  the  mysterious  stories  behind  the  crash.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Mortis  Mutilati  and  if  you  are  looking  for  something  that  is  different  in  the  black  metal  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Road  To  Nowhere"  "The  Smoke  Of  Your  Corpse"  and  "Ashes".  8  out  of  10.

Mortis Mutilati/The Stench Of Death/2018 Full Length Review

  France's  solo  project  Mortis  Mutilati  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  the  funeral  style  of  black  metal  from  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  self  released album  "The  Stench  Of  Death"  which  will  be  released  in  2018.

  Acoustic  guitar  playing  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  atmospheric  elements   while  operatic  female  vocals  are  also  used  briefly  and  after  the  intro  the  music  goes  into  more  of  a  heavier  and  melodic  musical  direction  while  also  introducing  high  pitched  depressive  black  metal  screams  onto  the  recording.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  which  also  gives  the  songs  a  more  raw  feeling  along  with  some  keyboards  also  being  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording.

  Some  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  some  of  the  slower  riffing  also  brings  in  elements  of  doom  metal  along  with  some  growls  also  being  utilized  at  times  and  melodic  chants  can  also be  heard  briefly  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  Mortis  Mutilati  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  the  funeral  style  of  black  metal  that  was  established  on  previous  releases,  the  production  sound s very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  a  mixture  of  English  and  French  and  cover  death,  eroticism  and  taphophilia  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Mortis  Mutilati  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  funeral  or  depressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Echoes  From  The  Coffin"  Onguent  Mortuarie"  and  "L-odeur  du  mort".  8  out  of  10.

Mortis Mutilati/Melepee Funebre/Naturmacht Productions/2015 CD Review

  Mortis  Mutilati  are  a  solo  project  from  France  that  plays  a  funeral  form  of  black  metal  and  this is  a  review  of  their  2015  album  "Melepee Funebre"  which  will  be  released  on  May  31st by  Naturmacht  Productions 

  Classical  guitar  playing  starts  off the  album  which  also  uses  a  good  mixture  of  both  finger  picking  and  full  chords  and  a  few  seconds  alter  operatic  female  vocals  are  added  into  the  music  and  after the  intro  the  music  starts  getting  heavier  and  goes  for  more  of  a  black  metal  direction  along  with  some  high  pitched  depressive  screams.

  A  great  portion of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  songs  also  use  a  decent  amount  of  melodies  and  also  brings  in  blast  beats  at  times  and  also  brings  in  a  decent  mixture  of  both  acoustic  and  heavy  parts  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  When  solos  and  leads a re  utilized  they  bring  more  melody  onto  the  recording  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  as  the  album  progresses  synths  can  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  they  bring  in  the  atmosphere  of  a  funeral  and  all  of  the  songs  bring  a  modern  approach  to  black  metal.

  Mortis  Mutilati  creates  another  black  metal  album  that  is  very  melodic  and  atmospheric  as  well  as  adding  in  a  great  amount of  originality  and  creating  his own  style  of  black  metal,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  hate,  taphophillia,  murder  and  mythological  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Mortis  Mutilati  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Venus  Anadyomene"  "Morte"  and  "Fingers  Of  Death".  8  out  of  10.

  Mortis  Mutilati  are  a  1  man  band  from  France  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  with a  musical  style  on  this  recording  I  would  describe  as  being  funeral  melodic  depressive  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2013  album  "Nameless  Here  For  Evermore"  which  was  released  by  Naturmacht  Productions.

  Drums  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  playing  with  some  blast  beats  being  utilized  at  times, while  the  bass  playing  has  a  very  dark  tone  with  riffs  that  follow  the  riffing  that  are  coming  out  of  the  guitars,  as  for  the  synths  when t hey  are  utilized  bring  a  very  dark,  atmospheric  and  funeral  sound  to  the  album.

  Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  depressive  black  metal  riffs  that  combine  raw  and  primitive  parts  with  atmospheric  elements  and  melody  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own  as  well  as  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing,  while  the  lead  guitars  are  very  melodic  sounding  depressive  black  metal  guitar  solos  and  leads,  as  for  the  classical  guitars  when  they  are  utilized  use  finger  picking  and  full  chords  to  enhance  the  dark atmosphere  of  the  album.

  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  depressive  black  metal  screams  along  with  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts,  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  a  mixture  of  French  and  English  and  cover  dark  and  depressive  themes,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  dark,  raw  and  primitive  sound  with  some  of  the  songs  being  long  and  epic  in  length.  

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Mortis  Mutilati  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  depressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Nameless  Here  For  Evermore"  "Obseques"  and  "Quote  the  Raven,  Nevermore".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.

Mortis Mutilati Interview

1.      Can you tell us a little bit about the project for those that have never heard of you before?

I created Mortis Mutilati on March 2011 after writing a few songs that I recorded thereafter on a little demo limited to 50 hand numbered copies. After having recording the whole album – I think between March and May 2011 – Naturmacht Productions produced it on pro tape edition.

2.      How would you describe your musical sound?

I tried to do something musically elegant keeping a rather dirty sound which better relfect the hateful aspect of the music.

3.      What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?

Mortis Mutilati is based on hate, murder and suicide. Each text is a personnel settling of scores.

4.      I know that the band name is a greek term for a curse tablet, what was that interested you about this name to name a project after that?

I always been fascinated by torture. Mortis Mutilati means “death by mutilation“ which is a particulary painful kind of torture praticed in China. I was not reffering tot he greek curse tablet when I choose that name form y project.

                                                                                               

5.      Currently there is only one member in the band, are you planning on expanding the line up in the future or do you choose to remain solo?

Mortis Mutilati is a personal one man band so I will ALWAYS be the only official member. If some musicians have to play in Mortis Mutilati, they’ll only be session musician and they know it.

6.      The new release came out on cassette,  what  is your opinions on that classic format and do you prefer to the modern formats such as mp3,  rar  or  zip's?

Yeah I love the tape format. It has a charm for me. Mp3, zip etc are easy to share the music but you can’t have the pleasure to get the object on you hands, you can’t look at the artwork etc… That’s too bad.

7.      On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your new album by fans of black metal and dark ambient?

I’m glad because the feedbacks were all quiet good. Of course it’s not perfect but I get some goods feed back. Hope that it will be even more better fort he forthcoming album.

8. What is going on with the other musical projects these days?

           

            I just returned from the Moonreich tour which consisted of 5 shows in France. Our new EP Curse
            Them is now out on mp3 format. I’m writing songs with Septentrion and we are searching for gigs.

            I’ll tack back the recording with Procession Of Death during May/June with my friend Spont (hails!!)

            Our project was on stand by since one year because of Spont’s studies.

9. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?

I just finished writing the second album and I think it will be quiet different from Sombre Neurasthénie. In fact it will be more depressive but more energetic at the same time.

10. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

            I had been very influenced by Burzum (I mean the Filosofem album) and some band as Sterbend or Nyktalgia. Nowadays, I’m a great fan of Austere but at the moment, I mainly listen to Raw BM bands as Taake, Ad Hominem, Voqkrre, Marduk etc etc

11. How would you describe your views on Occultism and Paganism?

Paganism and occultism have nothing to do with Mortis Mutilati.

12. Outside of music, what are some of your interests?

            I read a lot. My favorites writers are Stephen King and Edgar A. Poe. I also use to drink  red wine and beer while listening Black n Rolls bands with some good musician friends.

  Drums  range  from  slow  to  mid  paced  drumming  with  some  fast  playing  and  semi  blast  beats  being  used  at  times,  while  the  synths  bring  a  very  dark,  atmospheric  and  ambient  sound  to  the  music,  as  for  the  bass  playing  it  has  a  very  dark  tone  with  riffs  that  follow  the  riffing  that  is  coming  out  of  the  guitars  and  at  times  they  sound  very  powerful.
