Aodon/Portraits/Willowtip Records/2023 Full Length Review

Aodon  are  a  band  from  France  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  an  atmospheric  form  of  post  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2023  album  "Portraits"  which  will  be  released  in  June  by  Willowtip  Records.

A  very  fast  and  raw  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  post  metal  style  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  the  riffs  also  ad d  in  a  lot  of  melody.

Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also h ear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  the  music  also  has  its  atmospheric  moments.  Clean  playing  and  synths  can  also  be  heard  on  some  of  the  tracks  along  with  one  of  the  songs  also  being  long  and  epic  in  length  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  growls  can  also  be  heard.

On  this  album  Aodon  plays  a  style  of  post  black  metal  that  is  very  aggressive,  atmospheric,  melodic  and  modern  sounding.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  depths  of  human  nature,  nine  different  individuals  and  their  experiences  with  misery,  ego,  addiction,  belief,  violence,  obedience,  abuse,  destruction  and  love.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Aodon  and  if  you  are  a f an  of  atmospheric  post  black  metal,,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Swen"  "Adam"  "Liza"  and  "Sheelagh".  8  out  of  10.

Aodon Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

Aodon is a French band created in 2015. We used to say we do Post black metal, but tagging our own stuff is not that easy,

The best way to know what we do is just come and listen.

2.You have a new album coming out in March, musically how does it differ from your previous release?

The new album, 11069, walks on the same path than our first release, Sharphood, but goes further on every level.

3.This is also your first album since 2016, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time frame?

We had some important personal events to deal with these last years. '11069' was composed and written all along this time and is, in some ways, the outcome of our personal evolution.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored so far with the music?

'11069' tells about connections between Natural elements, Life and Death, disease and resilience. But it’s too hard for me to sum it up. Lyrics will be available soon for those interested in reading.

5.A lot of the lyrics on the first album where written in English while all the songs on the newer album are written in French, can you tell us a little bit more about going into this direction

I’m pleasantly surprised with the attention you pay to lyrics!

Well, the last track of our debut album was written in French and this allowed me to use nuances I’m not able to find in English.

Moreover, M-kha’s screams are so intense in French that our mother tongue was naturally adopted for the next album.

6.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Aodon'?

Aodon has no particular meaning. It has been chosen mainly for its sonority and its appearance.

7.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

The artwork for '11069'  is an original painted by Ludovic Robin. We worked closely together to obtain a pictorial expression of music and lyrics. He knew how to capture all of it.

8.The band started out as a solo project, what was the decision behind expanding into a full line up?

The first and main reason behind that was to play live music together. The three of us have known each other for years. and so the beginning was like a simple reunion of three friends.

9.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would you describe your stage performance?

We rarely played in concert because we  can’t find a drummer for the moment, so we have to deal with the recorded drumming. It suits us perfectly in rehearsal, but we’d like this new album and the signature with Willowtip Records to bring us enough visibility to find a drummer and shape more live projects.

10.Do you have any touring or show plans once the new album is released?

Not yet.

10.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of atmospheric and post black metal?

Our debut album, Sharphood, has been very well received in proportion to the little promotion we did!

'11069' hasn't been released yet, but the first track premiere for "Les rayons," has already gotten a very good reaction.

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Things are going well! We are honored to be part of such a label like Willowtip records for a few months now, and a few riffs are already emerging for a third album.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Our music tastes are many and varied, including: Dead can Dance, Alcest to Blut Aus Nord or Hate Eternal. Recently, we discovered some death metal gems like Ceremony of Silence and Daemusinem.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Nothing to add Thanks a lot for the interview and thanks for supporting us.

Aodon/11069/Willowtip Records/2020 CD Review

Aodon  are  a  band  from  France  that  plays  an  atmospheric  form  of  post black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  album  "11069"  which  will  be  released  in  March  by  Willowtip  Records.

A  very  dark  and  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  bring  in a   great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Vocals  are  mostly  angry  sounding  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  solos and  leads  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

Elements  of  post  metal  can  also  be  heard  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  as  well  as  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody.

Clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  recording  as  well  as  the  music also  having  its  atmospheric  moments.  Some  of  the  riffs  and  leads  also  add  in  a  dissonant  touch  at  times  and  synths  can  also  be  heard  on  the  closing  track.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  French  and  cover  dark  and  philosophical  themes.

In  my  opinion  Aodon  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric  post  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Les  rayons"  "L'instinct"  and  "Le  parfum  des  pluies".  8  out  of  10.
