Dépérir/War/Adipocere Records/2026 EP Review

Dépérir  are  a  band  from  Quebec,  Canada  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  misanthropic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2026  ep  "War"  which  will  be  released  in  May  by  Adipocere  Records  in  May.

War  samples  start  off  the  ep  before  going  into  a  very  fast  and  raw  musical  direction  which  also  utilizes  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  mixed  in  with  a  few  growls  along  with  the  music  also  being  very  heavily  influenced  by  the  old  school  era  of  the  genre.

Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  aggressive  style,  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  the  war  music  samples  are  added  on  the  closing  track

On  this  recording  Dépérir  remain  true  to  the  misanthropic  style  of  black  metal  from  previous  releases.  Th e production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  war  and  misanthropy  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Dépérir  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  misanthropic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Bloodspell"  and  "Payback".  8  out  of  10.

Dépérir Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new album?

We played many shows in Montréal, Québec City and Saguenay. Since the release of the new album we worked on new stuff for the third album and continued to prepare the next shows. We will present a new song at our next show in Rimouski 25 February 2023.

2.In April you also released a new album, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

The first album was written by the full band. Black Beast, our second opus, is written by myself (Nico). I wrote all guitars, bass and song structure and give that shit to our friend Kevin Foley from Abbath and Benighted to put his battery skills on. The result is far beyond my dreams, it was a fucking good move to work with this amazing drummer!

3.This is also your first release in 5 years, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time frame?

After the release of the first album, we played a lot of shows with Nargaroth, Taake, Blacklodge or Canadians band like Neige Eternelle for exemple. Time running out to create new songs and then came the fucking covid who prevented us to work in studio. I decided to do it by myself at home, but with the lockdown, it was hard to work with the singer, Bob. So, the album took time to rise but I took advantage of it ! During this time, I could contact many friends to participate on the album! Julien Truchan from Benighted, Vincent Houde from Dopethrone, Fetus from Ultra Vomit on guest vocals. Julien Gadiolet from Flayed at the guitar solo because he is the fucking best, and my ex-girlfriend Alex PB on the last song of the album, Empire.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the new album and also how would you describe your progress as songwriters over the years?

Perversion, serial killer, death, religion and Satan !

On the first album there was only one guitar, so the songs were simpler and more direct. On Black Beast album, I took time to work on two guitars and more complex structures, so the songs are musically richer. On the third album, we write all together and combine our skills and inspiration. It will be a new step forward for the band and without any doubt the most accomplished Dépérir album.

5.I know that the band name means "To Waste Away/Languish" in French, how does this name fit in with the musical style that you play?

We don’t try that the name fit our style ! First album is very black metal, second one is more death/black and thrash. The third will be different again, so…

In fact, I was looking for a name listening the Nailbomb first album. While the song Wasting Away playing, I say to myself: Fuck, it will be great in French: Dépérir. I propose it to my singer on the first album, WT, and he liked it!

6.On the new album cover there was also a couple of inverted pentagrams, does Satanism or Occultism play any role in your music?

Yes.

7.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

The best one was without any doubt the Skogen Fest II in Saguenay ! The sound was incredible and the new line up is fucking great on stage even though we didn’t play many gigs together but all new members are great musicians with a lot of experiences. The first one with this line up was also fucking great ! The bassist was not there (fuck him), but it was the first gig after covid and we were so motivated to play and burn the place that we gave an amazing performance!

8.Do you have any touring or show plans for 2023?

We work on it! For Europe! But many things like gaz price and other bands bad experiences don’t encourage us to invest in this project... We have three great shows coming February, April and June 2023 in Canada. We will focus on it for the moment.

9.The new album was released on 'Adipocere Records', how would you compare working with this label to your previous label 'HSP Productions'?

HSP productions is still our label but only for the digital part (Spotify, Apple Music etc)

Working with Adipocere is a dream come true! I have known Christian for more than 20 years and when he tells me that is doing production again, I directly send him the Black Beast demo! It’s great to work with a friend and with someone you can trust in this shark industry!

10.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days a couple of the band members are a part of?

I play in a Tenacious D cover band with Wax, lead guitar in Dépérir, we have lot of fun!

Sam, our drummer plays in many projects as drum session and our bassman, JF, is also bassman in a fucking great Death Metal band call Spirit Of Rebellion!

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

We want to play live, we want to tour in Europe, Asia, South America etc. Black Beast give us good gigs and opportunity. We hope that the third album bring us to the next level and so we can meet great musician on tour, have fun and fuck all the bitches that we can hahaha!

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles the band members are currently listening to nowadays?

All kind of metal! Black, Death, Thrash, Doom, Sludge, Heavy and many more. We are also listening old school blues, rock and rock and roll!

Our singer, Bob, is a music collector! You can find any style in his LP collection, from Bob Marley to Mayhem!

We also love shitty music, to partying! Slave and zouk music to get drunk and all kind of music that get pussy’s wet!

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Listen to Dépérir! If you don’t like it, go fuck yourself.
