For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?
Within Nostalgia was formed in 2013 by Alyssa Broere under the name Nostalgia. We are a 3 piece Metal band based out of North Bay Ontario. Musically and lyrically we are inspired by nature and its atmosphere as well as emotions of the deepest subconscious. We want to write music that fans can relate to on a personal and deeper level.
Recently you have released your first full length, musically how does it differ from the ep you had released in 2016?
Back in 2016 when our first EP ”Visions” was released, all of the music was written on an acoustic guitar but performed on electric, giving it a very dark folkish feel. The band was in its infancy at that point and had Kye on drums. Fast forward to today with the release of “Conjuring A New Reality” and you can hear a much more matured sound and writing style.
What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored so far with the music?
Our lyrics have always dealt with the dark side of the human mind in all its facets as well as nature and its relation to the human experience.
What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Within Nostalgia'?
The name Within Nostalgia basically means locked in a mental state of the past, always looking back in life when you should be looking toward a future
Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?
The artwork for CANR was done by our guitarist Kye Bell and is a heavily modified public domain image. We felt the deer represented our genre as a whole as well as a visual representation of our lyrics however, we chose to go with a more vibrant take on it to differentiate ourselves a bit more.
Originally the band started out as a solo project, what was the decision behind expanding into a trio?
The whole reasoning behind filling out the lineup was to perform live. While we do have a bass player Alyssa and Kye are the driving force behind the band but in order to play live, we needed more members.
What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?
Our best show to date is probably our CD release show this past October. We had an overwhelmingly great reaction from both fans and other bands on the bill. We would consider our stage performance to be a raw and open display of human emotion spanning from rage to the melancholic and many things in between.
Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?
At this moment we have a couple of gigs lined up with Toronto’s Astaroth Incarnate and are working out some dates with Morgan Rider of Deep Dark River/ Vesperia.
Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?
We’ve never really cared to have a label though we’re sure it would have its many benefits, we feel it’s important to build our own name. If the offer came up we would probably say yes but again, we don’t feel it’s incredibly necessary.
On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of post black metal and blackgaze?
The reaction from the Post Rock and Blackgaze community has actually been very well so far considering we’re something a little different than the typical band inside those genres.
Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?'
We definitely see ourselves going in a more melodic yet black direction with the newest material while still keeping in touch with our unique sound. Both ‘Death Lifes’ Lover’ and ‘Heart In The Eye Of The Skull’ have a lot of the characteristics of some of the newer riffs we’ve been working on.
What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
As a band, we’re very inspired by the feeling of bands likes Alcest and Woods Of Ypres, especially when it comes to lyrics and bands like Agalloch or Fen that have a really great sounding atmosphere. These days our music rotation really has no preference but to name a few bands we have been listening to recently would be Pelican, Those Poor Bastards, Royal Thunder and definitely the new Alcest album.
What are some of your non musical interests?
We really enjoy being out in nature whether it’s camping or hiking etc. Painting is another big one for some of us as well as any kind of art form. We are all also huge animal lovers and each has pets of our own.
Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
Just a big thank you from all of us at Within Nostalgia for all of your support!
