BVDK Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

A-152 : Hi, we're a trio from Eastern France. I play guitars, bass and do some electronics in the band. Lvx is our singer, she also wrote lyrics and do some programmings. Scree is the third member of the band and he plays guitars. Also, our sound engineer Benjamin did some drums arrangement during the recording.

2.How would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recoridngs?

A-152 : Simply a mix of things we love to listen to.

3.The lyrics on the new album cover 'African and Haitian Voodoo', can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in these topics?

A-152 : Actually, I'm very interested in this kind of cults. Africa didn't have a lot of written sources, so there's a lot of mystery to solve with archeology, history and other social sciences. We're trying to be the most precise possible in our thought and you'll not hear lyrics about Voodoo Dolls or Zombie in the album. Actually this is more like a metaphor between modern times and Dahomey Kingdom cults, Fon Voodoo and some Haïtian References. I think the modern society is actually questioning its relation with religion. And I personally found a lot of subjective answers in books like « Haïtian Voodo » by Alfred Métraux or in « Asres » by Jacquer Mercier. So, I think it was natural to talk about this. And of course there's also a musical interest to play Black Metal (which is a very mystic music to me) and give to it the flavor of percussive rites.

Lvx : I didn't necessarily wrote the lyrics in order to stick to the main theme. I mostly talk about my personal experience. However, everyone has its own interpretation. We thougt about writing in english but I preferred french, as I feel more confident using this language to express myself, and due to the various possibilities it offers.

• 4. I know that the band name are the initial's of 'Bree van de Kamp;', can you tell us a little bit more about this name'?
  
  

A-152 : This is a name that comes from one of our demo track. Actually, we like a lot Desperate Housewives. The Bree Van De Kamp character is very interesting : she's elegant, she makes muffins, she have a beautiful garden but she's also alcoholic, passionate by shotguns, etc... In fact, she's a woman with a lot of contradiction. Our band is also founded on contradictions : man vs machine, electronic vs acoustic, screams vs choirs, etc... So, this name is finally very adapted with our music.

Lvx : In these contradictions, she is the opposite of us.

5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

A-152 : Actually, we've only made one show in our hometown. We didn't want to play a lot of shows, our music isn't very simple to play live. But, I think this show was epilleptic and a little bit chaotic in some way... We'll release a video from this show soon.

6.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?

A-152 : No, we're focused on the creation of a second album.

7.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

A-152 : We discussed with some labels months ago but nobody released the album, so we're still searching for a label to do a physical version of the album.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal and electronic music?

A-152 : The feedbacks are pretty cool at the moment. We know that we play a music that will never be liked by everyone, even in the metal scene but some people seems to enjoy it. Of course, this is good to see that our sound is enjoyed in other countries !

9.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

A-152 : We're working on new sounds. We're not the kind of band that will repeat the same sound for ten years, Our EP is different from our first album and our second album will be different of « Architecture ». We're working on incorporating new musical genres (Jazz and Funk) in our next album.

Lvx : We have so much influences, we can even release True Black Metal album someday.

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

A-152 : Personnaly, I would say Frank Zappa, Deathspell Omega, Blut Aus Nord and the extended French Black Metal scene, Deafheaven, Miles Davis, Afrobeat Scene, Crystal Castles, Aphex Twin and a lot of Screamo (Raein, Touché Amoré, Daïtro,...). Currently, I'm listening to the Nier : Automata OST by Keiichi Okabe.

Lvx : Actually, I haven't the same influences than A-152. I often listen to Martial and Neo Folk, like Death in June, Rome or Dernière Volonté ; post-punk like Siouxie and The Banshees, Joy Division...Or electro like Felix Kubin, Crystal Castles. Obviously, I listen to a lot of Black Metal (Crystalium, Krallice, Nokturnal Mortuum, Hate Forest, Diapsiquir, Xasthur...). Lately I'm into bands like Death in June and some Deathcore bands (Oceano, Carnifex, …).

Scree : I would say, the holy trinity of the 90's doom/death band (old Anathema/Paradise Lost/My Dying Bride), a lot of melodic/symphonic black metal bands like Cradle of Filth,Sigh, Dissection, Diabolical Masquerade, Mörk Grying... Satyricon, Type O Negative, Electric Wizard, Summoning etc etc. And a lot more of Shoegaze, Post-Punk and Synthwave stuffs.

11.What are some of your non musical interests?

A-152 : Litterature, Video Games, Movies, TV-Shows... Actually there's a lot of references in the album : Bloodborne video game, David Lynch's filmography, Eyes Wide Shut, Attack On Titan & Shinsekai Yori Anime Series, etc...

Lvx : I would say the same as A-152. Also Ancient History and archeology. I hope to become a researcher in this area.

Scree : Video Games and Astronomy.

BVDK/Architecure Of Future Tribes/2017 Full Length Review

  BVDK  are  a  band  from  France  that  plays  a  mixture  of  post  black  metal,  industrial,  ethnic and  electronic  music  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2017  album  "Architecture  Of Future  Tribes".

  Melodic  choirs  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  heavy  and  melodic  riffs  a  few  seconds  later  that  also  mix  in with  elements  of  industrial  and  electronic  music  and  after  awhile  grim  black  metal  screams  and  programmed  blast  beats  are  added  onto  the  recording  and  the  music  also  gets  very  ritualistic  at  times.

  Elements  of  ethnic  music  can  be  heard  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  while  spoken word  parts  are  also  utilized  at  times  and  the  tremolo  picking  during  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  gives  the  music  a  more  raw  black  metal  feeling  along  with  some  traces  of  the  more  atmospheric  post  style  of  the  genre  in  the  melodic  guitar  leads and the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  a  later  tracks  adds  in  clean  guitars  and  you  can  also  hear  touches  of  psychedelic  at  times. 

  BVDK  plays  a  musical  style  that takes  post  black  metal,  industrial,  electronic  and  ethnic  music  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  something  very  original,  the  production  sounds very  professional  for  being  a  self  released  recording  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  French  and  cover  African  and  Haitian  Voodoo.

  In  my  opinion  BVDK  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  post  black  metal,  industrial,  electronic  and  ethnic  music  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Surreptitious  Cluster"  "Bahir  Dir"  and  "Psalm  32".  8  out  of  10.
