Midnight Odyssey/A Mass Of Fallen Stars - Live In Toulon/I, Voidhanger Records/2026 Live Album Review

 

  Australia's  Midnight  Odyssey  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  an  epic,  atmospheric  and  cosmic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  live  2026  album  "A  Mass  Of  Fallen  Stars  -  Live  In  Toulon"  which  will  be  released  in  May  by  I,  Voidhanger  Records.

  Live  audience  reaction  starts  off  the  album  before  adding  in  some  ambient  style  keyboards  which  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times.  All  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  elements  of  doom  metal  are  also  added  into  the  slower  sections  of  the  recording.

  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  atmospheric  sounding  while  the  harsh  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  which  also  adds  in  some  depressive  touches.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

  Symphonic  touches  are  also  utilized  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  along  with  all  of  the  drum  beats  also  being  programmed.  Clear  singing  is  also  added on  a  couple  of  songs  as  well  as  one  track  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing   and  most  of  the  album  sticks  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  tempo  direction.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  mythology,  spirituality,  space,  death  and  misanthropy  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Midnight  Odyssey  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  epic,  atmospheric  and  cosmic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  live  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "From  Forest  To  Firmament"  "When  Titans  Fall"  and  "Tears  of  Starfire".  8  out  of  10.

Midnight Odyssey/Swords Of Dis/Oros Kau/Serpent Ascending/From The Waters Of Death - A Retelling Of The Epic Of Gilgamesh/I, Voidhanger Records/4 Way Split Album Review

   This  is  a  review  of  a  4  way  split  album  between  Australia's  Midnight  Odyssey,  United  Kingdom's  Sword  of  Dis,  Belgium's  Oros  Kau  and  Finland's  Serpent  Ascending  with  the  album  being  called  "From  The  Waters  of  Death  -  A  Retelling  Of  The  Epic  Of  Gilgamesh"  which  will  be  released  in  February  by  I,  Voidhanger  Records  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  of Serpent  Ascending  a  solo  project  that  plays  death  metal.

  His  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  while  clear  male  and  female  singing  and  synths  are  also  used  at  times.  The  track  is  also  over  14  minutes  in  length  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  song  also  adds  in  a  lot  of  blast  beats  along  with  the  harsh  vocals  being  mostly  death  metal  growls.  At  times  the  music  also  gets  technical  sounding.

  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  the  track  also  adding  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  as  well  as  the  guitar  leads  also  expanding  more  of  the  technical  approach,  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  briefly.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  Epic  Of  Gilgamesh. 

  In  my  opinion  Serpent  Ascending  a  very  great  sounding  death  metal  solo  project  and  if  you  are  looking  for  something  very  different  in  this  genre,  you  should  check  out  his  side  of  the  split.

  Nest  up  is  Oros  Kau  a  solo  project  who  returns  with  a  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal.

  His  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  song  also  add  in  a  lot  of  blast  beats.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  medal  screams.

  The  track  is  also  over  7  minutes  in  length  along  with  some  operatic  clear  singing  and  death  metal  growls  also  being  used  at  times.  The  song  also  adds  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts   as  well  as  the  music  also  adding  in  some  atmospheric  touches,  when  tremolo  picking  is  added  into  the  faster  riffing  they  also  give  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover the  Epic  Of  Gilgamesh.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  song  form  Oros  Kau  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black  and  death  metal,  you  should  check  out  his  side  of  the  split.

  Next  up  is  Swords  Of  Dis  a  duo  that  returns  with  a  mixture  of  black  and  doom  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  middle  eastern  style  folk  instruments  and  operatic  female  vocals  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction.  Clear  male  vocals  are  also  used  at  times  along  with  the  harsher  vocals  being  mostly  death  metal  growls  mixed  in  with  a  few  black  metal  screams.

  Both  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  the  slower  sections  of  the  music  bringing  in  elements  of  death  metal.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  give  the  recording  more  of  a  raw  feeling,  spoken  words  are  also  used  briefly  as  well  as  the  riffs  also  adding  in  some  melodies.      When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  and  orchestral  sounds  can  also  be  heard  at  times. The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  Epic  of  Gilgamesh..  

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Swords  Of  Dis  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black  and  doom  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Blood  Stains  The  Altar  Of  The  Sun  And  In  Ishtar’s  Mourning  The  Feral  Lord  Of Desolation  Awaits  The  House  Of  Dust".

  Next  up  is  Midnight  Odyssey  a  solo  project  who  returns  with  his  ambient  and  cosmic  style  of  black  metal.

  His  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  epic  ambient  style  keyboards  which  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs.  Clear  singing  and  spoken  words  can  also  be  heard  at  times  while  the  only  song  that  is  present  on  his  side  of  the  recording  is  also  over  20  minutes  in  length.

  Harsh  vocals  are  mostly  black  metal  screams  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  as  well  as  some  clean  playing  also  being  utilized  briefly,  when  the  music  finally  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  Epic  Of  Gilgamesh.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  track  from  Midnight  Odyssey  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  cosmic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  his  side  of  the  split.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  the  more  creative  sides  of  black,  doom  and  death  metal.  8/5  out  of  10.

  Australia's  solo  project  Midnight  Odyssey  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  an  ambient,  atmospheric,  cosmic  and  symphonic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2024  ep  "Closer  To  The  Sky"  which  was  released  by  i,  Voidhanger  Records.

  A  very  heavy  and  symphonic  sound  starts  off  the ep  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast b eats  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Vocals  are  mostly  angry  sounding  black  metal  screams  and  all  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  while  the  ep  also  has  its  atmospheric  moments.  The  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  and  choirs  and  clear  singing  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording.  

  Some  of  the  keyboards  also  add  in  elements  of  ambient  as  well  as  mixing  in  some  touches  of  classical  and  orchestral  music    along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  when  they  are  utilized,  one  song  also  adds  in  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  mystery  of  existence  and  otherworldly  dimensions. 

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Midnight  Odyssey  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  ambient,  atmospheric,  cosmic  and  symphonic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Souls  Left  Wondering"  and  "Awakening".  8  out  of  10.

Midnight Odyssey/Biolume Part 3: A Fullmoon Madness/I, Voidhanger Records/2023 Double Album Review

 

  Australia's  solo  project  Midnight  Odyssey  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  an  atmospheric  and  cosmic  form  of  ambient  black  metal  with  elements  of  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2023  double  album  "Biolume  Part  3:  a  Fullmoon Madness"  which  will  be  released  in  November  by  I,  Voidhanger  Records.

  Ambient  style  synths  and  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  and  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times.  Symphonic  sounds  are  also  utilized  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  while  the  slower  sections  of  the  tracks  also  bring  in  elements  of  doom  metal  and  the  clear  vocals  also  add  in  more  of  a  traditional  metal  style.

  Most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  grim  black  metal  screams  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  recording.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  a  lot  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  you  can  also  hear  a  lot  of  blast beats

 

  The  tremolo  picking  in  the  faster  riffing  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  when  they  are  utilized.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  added  into  the  music  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  as  well  as  the  music  also  having  its  atmospheric  and  epic  moments  and  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly.

  Some  tracks  also  adding  in  some  orchestra  arrangements  along  with  the  synths  also  adding  in  touches  of  darkwave  as  well  as  capturing  the  atmosphere  of  either  a  fantasy  or  historical  movie  soundtrack.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  moonlit  night  sky  and  the  personification  and  mythology  around  Selene/Luna.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Midnight  Odyssey  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric,  cosmic  and  ambient  black  metal  with  elements  of  doom  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  double  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "As  Darkness  Dims  The  Future"  "They  have  Always  Known"  "The  Ghost  of  Endymion"  and  "The  last  Day".  8 out  of  10.

Midnight Odyssey/Echoes Of A Celestial Ruin/I, Voidhanger Records/2022 Compilation Review

 

  Australia's  solo  project  Midnight  Odyssey  have  returned  with  a  collection  that  consists  of  the  albums  "Ruins  Of  A  Celestial  Fire"  "Ashes  From  A  Terrestrial  Fall"  and  the  unreleased  recording  "Echoes  From  The  Thalassic  Deep"   which  also  go  for  a  more  space  ambient  direction  then  the  ambient  black  metal  style  he  is  known  for  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  triple  compilation  album  "Echoes  Of  A  Celestial  Ruin"  which  will  be  released  in  July  by  I,  Voidhanger  Records.

  Ambient  style  synths  which  also  use  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys  start  off  the  compilation  while  also  bringing  in  elements  of  space  music   along  with  all  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  The  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melodies  and  most  of  the  compilation  is  instrumental.

  All  of  the  tracks  also  sound  very  different  from  each  other  while  the  music  also  has  its  atmospheric  moments.  Drones  can  also  be  heard  at  times  along  with  the  second  album  on  the  compilation  bringing  in  more  of  a  dark  ambient  style  as  well  as  capturing  the  atmosphere  of  an  epic  fantasy  movie  soundtrack  on  some  of  the  songs  and  at  times  the  music  also  brings  in  more  of  a  sci-fi  orientated  atmosphere  which  also  dominates  the  third  recording  present  on  the  compilation  and  synths  are  the  only  musical  instrument  being  utilized  on  all  of  the  releases.

  On  this  compilation  Midnight  odyssey  brings  in  a  trilogy  of  space  ambient  albums  that  are  a  lot  more  different  than  his  more  black  metal  orientated  material  that  he  is  more  known  for  as  well  as  keeping  everything  instrumental  while  the  production  sounds  very  dark.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  collection  from  Midnight  Odyssey  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  space  ambient,  you  should  check  out  this  compilation.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "A  Symphony  In  Stardust"  "The  Stars  Through  Smoke-Filled  Eyes"  and  "The  Tombs  of  legends  past".  8  out  of  10.

  Midnight  Odyssey  are  a  solo  project  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  very  atmospheric  and  cosmic  form  of  ambient  black  metal  with  some  touches  of  doom  and  traditional  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2021  double  album  "Biolume  Part  2:  The  Golden  Orb"  which  will  be  released  in  March  by  I,  Voidhanger  Records.

  Ambient  style  synths  start  off  the  album  and  also  mix  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music  while  also  utilizing  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys.  Most  of  the  songs  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  some  clean  vocals  also  being  added  into  some  parts  of  the  recording  and  all  of  the  drum  beats  are  also  programmed.

  Touches  of  medieval  music  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  recording  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very melodic  style  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  The  slower  sections  of  the  songs  also  mix  in  elements  of  doom  metal  along  with  the  music  also  adding  in  some  traditional  metal  influences.  Black  metal  screams  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  recording  as  well  as  some  spoken  word  parts  also  being  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  album.

  Military  style  battle  horns  can  also  be  heard  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  as  well  as  the  music  also  showing  an  influence  of  Viking  era  Bathory  along  with  one  of  the  tracks  also  introducing  death  metal  growls  onto  the  album,  operatic  choirs  can  also  be  heard  briefly.  and  as  the  album  progresses  whispered  vocals  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  all  of  the  music  sticks  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  tempo  direction.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Greek,  Roman  and  Near  Eastern  Mythology  and  Literature  themes.  

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Midnight  Odyssey  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric,  ambient  and  cosmic  black  and  doom  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  double  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Dawn-Bringer"  "Rise  Of  Thunder"  "The  Unconquered  Star"  and  "The  Chains  Become  Mine".  8  out  of  10.

  Midnight Odyssey  are  a  solo  project  from  Australia  that  plays  a cosmic  and  ambient  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2017  double  compilation  album  "Silhouettes  Of  Stars"  which  will  be  released  in  May  by  I,  Voidhanger  Records.

  Ambient  style  synths  start  off  the  album and  also  gives  the  songs  an  epic  atmosphere  and  they  also  mix  in  with  the  heavier  material  which  also  uses  a  great  amount  of  grim  black  metal  screams  and  melodic  chants/singing  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  recording  and  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  at  times.

  A  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion  along  with  riffs  also  using  a  great  amount  of  melody  and  clean  playing  is  also  used  in  certain  sections  of  the  compilation.

  One  of  the  tracks  is  a  cover  of  Emperor's  "Cosmic  Keys  To  My Creations  And  Times"  which  also  introduces  spoken  word  parts  onto  the  compilation  and  the  synths  also  mix  in  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys  on  some  of  the  later  songs  and  acoustic  guitars  are  also  used  on  some  of  the  tracks  and  one  song  is  an  instrumental  ambient  piece. 

  Midnight  Odyssey plays  a  musical  style  that  mixes  atmospheric  black  metal  with  ambient  to  create  a  sound  of  his  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while the  lyrics  cover  nature,  space,  death  and  misanthropy  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Midnight  Odyssey  are  a  very  great  sounding  cosmic  black  metal  solo  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  compilation.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Magica"  "Fighting  The  Seraphim"  "Nocturnal"  and  "A  Whisper's  Emptiness".  8  out  of  10.
