Reflection Of Misery Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?

We are a duo (Cuervo, Fornost) from Nicaragua which plays a mixture between Black Metal and some ambient details.

2.In July you had released an album, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for on the recording?

We wanted to make a dark, raw and minimalist essence.

3.Both of the other members are also in other bands, what is it that you bring into the music of 'Reflection Of Misery', that you are not able to do with your other groups?

The mixture of noises on guitar riffs, dynamics on drums and dissonance. Other Black Metal bands in here don’t agree with that kind of style, long and dark songs, so we are practically the first band playing this style in this country.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored so far with the music?

The mental and moral decadence of mankind and insignificance of life.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Reflection of Misery'?

Humankind is afraid of seeing themselves in a mirror, because they cannot deal with the reflection of being caged in their own miseries.

6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

It is an abstract interpretation of our lyrics, decadence and insignificance of existence.

7.Currently there are only 2 members in the band, are you open to expanding the line up or do you prefer to remain a duo?

We rather prefer to remain as a duo.

8.The album was released on 'Exnihilo Records', can you tell us a little bit more about this label?

Cuervo owns Exnihilo Records (ENR), it’s a small label and mailorder focused on Black Metal and related genres, based in Managua, Nicaragua, aimed to allow releases to be available.

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?

There’s a positive feedback on bandcamp.

10.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?

We can talk just about Reflection of Misery and Veins (Cuervo’s OMB) which is about to release the second full length (By ENR).

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Reflection of Misery is a studio band, so, looking foward, we have to do at least one work more.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Actually nowadays bands. Bands from the last decade. We are not influenced by first, second nor even a “Third” wave of Black Metal, against any common belief.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Thanks for the support.

Reflection Of Misery/Total Scorn Of Life/Exnihilo Records/2021 CD Review

Reflection  Of  Misery  are  a  duo  form  Nicaragua  that  plays  a  very  dark  form  of  ambient  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  album  Total  Scorn  Of  Life"  which  was  released  by  Exnihilo  Records.

Dark  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  touches  of  noise  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  style  while t he  vocals  also  bring  in  a  mixture  of  deep  growls  and  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.

All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast b eats  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  music  also  mixing  in  a  decent  amount  of  dark  ambient  elements.  The  sounds  of  torture  can  also  be  heard  at  times  as  well  as  the  riffing  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  melody  and  towards  the  end  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  misanthropy,  nihilism,  loathing  and  decadence  themes.

In  my  opinion  Reflection  Of  Misery  are  a  very  great  sounding  dark  ambient  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Orgy  Of  Wounds"  and  "The  Inevitable  Fracture  of  Existence".  8  out  of  10.
