Ashen Horde/The Harvest/2026 Full Length Review

 

  Los  Angeles,  California's  Ashen  Horde  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  melodic  and  progressive  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2026  album  "The  Harvest"  which  will  be  released  in  May.

  A  very  dark,  heavy  and  melodic  sound  start  off  the  album  while  the  solos  and  leads  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast b eats  which  also  gives  the  recording  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

  Vocals  are a  mixture  of  black  metal  screams  and  death  metal  growls  mixed  in  with  some  clear  singing  which  also  adds  in  a  touch  of  alternative  rock  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  technical  sounding  along  with  some  tracks  also  showing  the  music  going  into  more  of  a  progressive  direction.

  On  this  recording  Ashen  Horde  introduce  elements  of  alternative  rock  into  their  progressive  and  technical  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  to  create  something  very  different  from  previous  releases.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  collapse,  decay  and  transformation.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Ashen  Horde  and  if  you  are  a fan  of  progressive  and  technical  black  and  death  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Autumnal"  "Remnant"  and  "The  Harvest".  8  out  of  10.

Ashen Horde/Decayed/2024 EP Review

 

  

   Los  Angeles,  California's  Ashen  Horde  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  more  of  a  technical  and  progressive  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2024  ep  "Decayed"  which  consists  of  4  new  song  and  12  nonalbum  songs  that  where  released  in  the  years  2015-2021.

  

   Clean  playing  starts  off  the  ep  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier,  melodic  and  technical  direction  while  the  music  also  has  its  progressive  moments.  Blast  beats  are  also  added  into  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  while  the  vocals  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.

  

   All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Death  metal  growls  are  also  utilized  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  tracks  and  clear  vocals  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  yet  style  along  with  the  tremolo  picking  in  the  faster  riffing  also  giving  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling,  a  couple  of  the  tracks  are  also  instrumentals.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  plagues  and  ancestral  curses. 

 

   In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  from  Ashen  Horde  and  if  you  are  a f an  of  progressive  and  technical  black  and  death  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "A  Portent  Among  The  Debris"  "Baited  Breath"  "The  Entity"  and  "Echthros".  8  out  of  10.

Ashen Horde/Antimony/Transcending Obscurity Records/2023 Full Length Review

 

 Hollywood,  California's  Ashen  Horde  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  more  of  a  progressive  and  technical  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their    album  "Antimony"  which  will  be  released  in  2023  by  Transcending  Obscurity  Records.

  A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  the  vocals  are  a  mixture  of  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  death  metal  growls.

  The  riffs  also  add  in  a  lot  of  melody  while  the  riffing,  solos  and  leads  also  go  into  a  very  technical  direction  at  times.  Some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  album  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  some  of  the  tracks  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  clear  vocals  as  well  as  the  music  also  having  its  progressive  moments,  spoken  word  parts  are  also  added  on  the  closing  track.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  a  concept  album  based  upon  the  unsolved  murder  of  Charles  Bravo  committed  in  1876.  

 In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Ashen  Horde  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  progressive  and  technical  black  and  death  metal,   you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Throes  Of  Agony"  "The  Physician"  and  "The  Neophyte".  8  out  of  10.

Ashen Horde/Tintregen/2019 EP Review

  Los  Angeles,  California's  Ashen  Horde  have  returned  with  a  new  recording which  shows  the  music  going  into  more  of  a  progressive  and  dissonant  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2019  ep  "Tintregen"  which  will  be  released  in  December.

  A  very  dark  sound  starts  of  the  ep  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  while  the  vocals  also  add  in  a  mixture  of  black  metal  screams  and  death  metal  growls.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  The  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  being  done  in  a  very  technical  yet  melodic  style.  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  progressive  and  dissonant  sounding  while  the  music  always  sticks  to  a  very  heavy  direction  as  well  as  having  its  brutal  moments  and  clean  vocals  can  also  be  heard  briefly  on  the  closing  track.

  On  this  recording  Ashen  Horde  takes  dissonant  black  emtal  and  mixes  it  with  the  more  progressive  and  technical  style  of  death  metal  which  was  also  established  on  previous  releases.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  for  being  a  self  released  recording  while  the  lyrics  cover  philosophical  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Ashen  Horde  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  technical,  progressive,  dissonant  black  and  death  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Entity"  and  "Mourning  Due".  8  out  of  10.

Ashen Horde/Fallen Cathedrals/Extreme Metal Music/Rockshots Records/2019 CD Review

  Hollywood,  California's  Ashen  Horde  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  into  even  more  of  a  progressive  black  metal  direction  with  some  elements  of  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2019  album  "Fallen  Cathedrals"  which  will  be  released  in  March  as  a  joint  effort  by  Extreme Metal Music  and  Rockshots  Records.

  A  very  fast,  raw  and  dissonant  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking.  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  brutal  and  technical  sounding  while  the  riffs  also  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  melody.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Vocals  are  a  mixture  of  black  metal  screams  and  death  metal  growls  while  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Clean  vocals  can  also be  heard  at  times  as  well  as  the  solos  and  leads  being  done  in a  very  melodic  yet  technical  style  and a   couple of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  At  times  the  music  gets  very  progressive  sounding  while  some  of  the  riffing  also  adds  in  the  more  brutal style  of  death  metal.  All  of  the  songs  sound  very  different  from  each  other  without  losing  any  heaviness  or  brutality.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  a  concept  album  based  upon  J.G  Ballard's  dystopian  novel  "High  Rise".

 


In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Ashen  Horde  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  progressive  black  and  death  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Parity  Lost"  "The  Vanishing"  "Final  Ascent"  and  "Primal".  8  out  of  10.

Ashen Horde/The Alchemist/2017 EP Review

  Ashen  Horde  are  a  band  from  Hollywood,  California  that  has  been  featured  before in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  dissonant  and  technical  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2017  ep  "The  Alchemist".

  A  very  heavy  and  dissonant  sound  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  some  grim  yet  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  a  few  seconds  later  and  the  music  is  more  rooted  in  a  modern  era  of  the  genre  while  also  mixing  in  a  decent  amount  of  melodic  and  progressive  riffing  and  the  solos  and  leads  are  done  in a   technical  fashion.

  Deep  growling  vocals  can  be  heard  in  the  background  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats can  be  heard  along  with  the  songs  also  bringing  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  also  keeping  everything  heavy.

  On  this  recording  Ashen  Horde  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  modern,  dissonant,  technical  and  progressive  sounding,  the  production  sounds very  professional  for  being  a  self  released  recording  while  the  lyrics  cover  alchemical  and  philosophical  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Ashen  Horde  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  dissonant  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Fallen".  8  out  of  10.

Ashen Horde/Nine Plagues/Mandol Records/2015 Full Length Review

  Ashen  Horde  are  a  solo  project  from  California  that  plays  a  progressive  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2015  album  "Nine  Plagues"  which  was  released  on  Mandol  Records.

  Thunder  sounds  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  heavy  guitar  riffs  a  few  seconds  later  and   you can  also  hear  melodies  in  the  music  at  times  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  and  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  black  metal  screams  and  the  solos  and  leads  also  use  a  great  amount  of  melody.

  Progressive  elements  can  be  heard  quite  a  bit throughout  the  recording  and  a  few  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  it  brings  in  more  of  a  raw  style  of  the  genre  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  you  can  also h ear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording  and  you  can  also  hear  a  lot  of  death  metal  and  thrash  elements  throughout  the  recording  and  the w hole  album  also remains  very  heavy  from  beginning  to end.

  Ashen  Horde  plays  a  style  of  progressive  black  metal  that is  a  lot  more  heavier,  rawer  and  guitar  driven  than  most  bands  of  the  genre  and  the  thrash  and  death  metal elements  take  the  songs  into  even  more  of  a  heavier  direction,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  yet  powerful  at  the  same  time  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and philosophical  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Ashen  Horde  are  a  very  great  sounding  progressive  black  metal  solo  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Desecration  Of  The  Sanctuary"  "Famine's  Feast"  "Dissension"  and  "A  Reversal  Of  Misfortune".  8  out  of  10.
