1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording of the new album?
We have anxiously been awaiting the release date of July 20th, 2018!
2.You have a new album coming out in July, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?
The songs on the new album tend to be more structured and less erratic than the works of our past. There is also greater variability in the dynamic range of the songs. The album itself was recorded in a different studio than the previous two releases and we are quite pleased with the sound of the finished product.
3.This is your first album in 5 years, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time span?
Finnr’s Cane is just one component of our lives. In the time between releases we have been going about the usual things that everyone experiences: work, family, travel, etc.
4.On the albums you use a cello instead of a bass guitar, do you feel this makes your music a lot more different than other bands?
The absence of bass guitar gives the music a somewhat hollow atmosphere, which was the effect we wanted to achieve. In that sense, the overall sound will never be the same as any band that uses the instrument. The lack of bass also frees up space for other instruments, like the cello, which results in further differentiation from other bands.
5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Finnr's Cane'?
The band name is somewhat abstract and open to interpretation. It always makes me think of an old traveller with a walking staff; the type of person that has experienced many things and will tell you about them if you care to listen.
6.I have read that the band does not do live shows, has this changed over the years?
Finnr’s Cane is strictly a studio project. Maybe we will play live in the future when the time is right, however, we’ve been saying that for almost ten years now.
7.The new album is coming out on 'Prophecy Productions', can you tell us a little bit more about this label?
We were thrilled to be contacted by Prophecy Productions after the release of our first album. We certainly respect them and their roster of artists and commend them for producing high-quality, physical releases. I sometimes daydream about having our first live gig at a future Prophecy Fest.
8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?
Finnr’s Cane has a small fan-base, and certainly garners mixed reviews from fans. I would think that a die-hard black metal fan would probably be better served by a band that features more of the traditional black metal elements than what Finnr’s Cane produces.
9.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
There isn’t a specific plan for any one musical direction; we will stick with the philosophy we’ve used thus far, which is to simply create music that we enjoy listening to. It would be nice to add in traditional instruments that have not been incorporated yet.
10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
We don’t really draw a lot of inspiration from other artists when creating these songs. Of course, we love music from many different genres, but the idea is not to write a song that sounds like Band A, Band B, and Band C. Instead of trying to make a sound that is inspired by different bands, we rely on broad themes as the primary source of inspiration and seek to invoke feelings (through music) that resonate with those themes.
As for what I am listening to these days, Devin Townsend’s various projects (Devin Townsend Project, Strapping Young Lad, Causalities of Cool, etc.) are my top choices. As far as I’m concerned, the man is a national treasure and an ambassador for Canadian music. I haven’t had a chance to listen to the new At The Gates album, but I am sure it will receive heavy rotation soon enough.
11.What are some of your non-musical interests?
I became a father a little less than four months ago, so changing diapers and pushing a stroller are my primary interests right now.
