Necromantia where a b and from Greece that had a history that went back to the 80's and where one of the first Hellenic occult black metal bands from Greece and this is a review of their biography novel "The Serpent And The Pentagram: The Chronicles Of necromania" which will b e released in march by Pagan Records and was written by The Magus and Aris Shock.
The novel starts out with a forward and a prelude to give you a brief introduction to the book before going into the earlier years of the band members starting in the 70's and 80's. The second chapter also explains the earlier years of when the magus started listening to metal and also how different it was discovering heavier music back in the days of no internet or mp3 players.
Later in the chapter the Magus also talks about the earlier days when he started discovering punk and hardcore bands. A lot of the chapter also goes into what it was like being a metalhead in high school as a teenager during the 80's and as the story progresses the book also goes into the history of the b ands The Magus played in before Necromantia.
The fourth chapter also explains the earlier days of Necromantia as well as going into how the band members got interest in occultism and occult practices. A lot of the chapter also goes into detail of the bands members in horror movies and novels and later on the book goes into how Necromantia had a very huge influence on the second wave era of black metal.
When the novel goes more into the early 90's era you also start hearing more of the earlier days of the Hellenic black metal scene. In the earlier chapters of the book they also show some pictures of the band in the early phase along with a lot of pictures of t heir early demo's, promos and albums as well as explaining the history between the recordings and the record labels that they where working with back then.
In one of the chapters The Magus also talks about his experiences in engineering school and how he became a sound engineer. Magus also goes into details on one of his meetings with a serial killer that he knew for a short time that was mentally unstable and how it led to a satanic panic in Greece where a lot of Satanists and metal musicians also started getting harassed by the police.
Later on in the novel the book gores into details of the other bands and musical projects the band members of Necromantia also participated in. A later chapter also talks about the paper zines that where very common in the 90's and how a couple of the band members where involved with a few and had one zine devoted to underground metal and another one devoted to occultism and other esoteric topics.
When the novel gets closer to the mid 90's and early 2000's era they start talking about some of the record labels they worked with when there contract was finished with Osmose Productions as well talking about some of the line up changes they where having around that time, before going into details about The Magus's martial arts training and the impact it had on his life.
Towards the end of the novel the story goes into the death of founding member Baron Blood who passed away in 2019. In the same chapter they also talk about his history with Necromantia and other projects as well as adding in some perspectives from other people that also know him before going into the mgus's post Necromantia projects with the main focus being on Yoth Iria before closing the novel with a farewll.
In my opinion this is a very great novel that goes into the history of Necromantia and the impact and influence they have had on black metal and if you are a fan of this band, you should read this novel. 9 out of 10.
