Gravesend/Gowanus Death Stomp/20 Buck Spin/2023 Full Length Review

 

  New  York's  Gravesend  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  mixture  of  war,  black,  death  metal  and  grindcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2023  album  "Gowanus  Death  Stomp'  which  will  be  released  in  october  by  20  Buck  Spin.

  The  sounds  of  insects  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  soundscapes  and spoken  word  samples  a  few  seconds  later  before  going  into  a  heavier  musical  direction.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  war  metal  elements  can  also  be  heard  and  the  vocals  also  add  in  a  lot  of  black  metal  screams.

  At  times  the  music  captures  the  brutality  of  grindcore  while  the  tremolo  picking  in  the  faster  riffing  also  gives  the  album  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  A  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  short  in  length  along  with  the  songs  also  mixing  in  touches  of  90's  era  death  metal  and   a  few bestial  growls.

   Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  as  well  as  some  of  the  riffing  also  bringing  in  a  small  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies,  synths  are  also  added  towards  the  end.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  vermin,  decay  and  filth  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Gravesend  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  war,  black,  death  metal  and  grindcore,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "11414"  "Code  Of  Silence"  "Thirty  Caliber  Pesticide"  and  "Vermin  Victory".  8 out  of  10.

Gravesend/Methods Of Human Disposal/20 Buck Spin/2021 CD Review

 

  Gravesend  are  a b and  from  new  York  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  mixture  of  war,  black,  death  metal  and  grindcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  album  "Methods  Of  Human  Disposal"  which  will  be  released  in  February  by  20  Buck  Spin.

  Apocalyptic  sounding  synths  start  off  the  album  while  spoken  word  samples  can  also  be  heard  briefly  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction.  At  times  the  bass  guitar  also  sounds  very  powerful  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  mixture  of  grindcore  and  war  metal  elements  and  blast  beats.

  Vocals  are  a  mixture  of  black  metal  screams  and  bestial  death  metal  growls  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  All  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  short  in  length  with  the  average  song  being  around  1  or  2  minutes  each  along  with  with  the  music  also  bring  in  a  good  mixture  of  mid  80's  and 90's  influences  but  keeping  it  modern  at  the  same  time.

  When  tremolo  picking  is  utilized  it  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  small  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  as  well  as  the  guitar  leads  being  done  in  a  very  chaotic  style  when  they  are  utilized,  a  later  song  also  introduces  elements  of  noise  onto  the  album.  The  production   sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  filth  and  corruption  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Gravesend  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  war,  black,  death  metal  and  grindcore,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "STH-10"  "Unclaimed  Remains"  "Absolute  Filth"  and  "Scum  Breeds  Scum".  8  out  of  10.

Gravesend/Preparations For Human Disposal/Stygian Black Hand/2020 Demo Review

  Gravesend  are  a  band  from  New  York  that  plays  a  mixture  of  war,  black, death  metal  and  grindcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  demo  "Preparations  For  Human  Disposal"  which  will  be  released on  June  5th  by  Stygian  Black  Hand.

  Horror  movie  style  synths  start  off  the  demo  while  tortured  voices  can  also  be  heard  in  the  background  briefly  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction.  All  of  the  musical instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  music  also  mixes  in  a  great  amount  of  grindcore  elements.

  Vocals  are  a  mixture  of  bestial  growls  and  black  metal  screams  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  war  metal  influences,  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  filth  and  urban  disgust  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Gravesend  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  war,  black,  death  metal  and  grindcore  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Rats  Among  Us"  and  "From  Rikers  To  The  Grave".  8  out  of  10.
