Vestiges/Caulfield/Replenish Records/2012 Split EP Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  ep  between  Washington  D.C's  Vestiges  and  Australia's  Caulfield  which was  released  by  Replenish  Records  in  2012  and  we  will  start  of  the  review  with  Vestiges  a  band  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  post  black  metal.

  Drums  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  playing  with  some  blast  beats  being  present  on  this  song,  while  the  bass  playing  has  a  very  strong  and  powerful  sound  with  heavy  riffing  that  dominates  throughout  their  side  of  the  recording.

  Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  post  black  metal  riffs  that  use  some  raw  and primitive  elements  as  well  as  some  clean  playing,  melody,  doom  and  crust  influences  in  the  song  and  there  are  no  guitar  solos  or  leads  present  on t heir  side  of  the  recording.

  Vocals  range  from  deep  growls  to  high  pitched  black  metal  screams,  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  strong,  powerful,  and  heavy  sound  where  you  can  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  their  song.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sound  from  Vestiges  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  post  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  recording.  RECOMMENDED.

  Next  up  is  Caulfield  a  band  that  plays  post  hardcore.

  Vocals  are  all  deep  death/doom  metal  growls,  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes,  as  for t he  production  it  has  a  very  strong,  powerful,  heavy  and  dark  sound  and  you  can  hear  all  of t he  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on t heir  side  of  the  recording.

  In  my  opinion  Caulfield  are  a  very  great  sounding  hybrid  of  post  hardcore,  doom  and  sludge  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out t his b and.  RECOMMENDED.

  In  conclusion  I  feel t his  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black  metal,  post  hardcore,  doom  and  sludge,  you  should  add this  split  to  your  collection.  RECOMMENDED  BUY.

  Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  riffs  that  combine  raw  and  primitive  sounding  black  metal  with  post  rock  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own  with  some  melodic  riffing  being  used  at  times,  while  the  lead  guitars  are  very  melodic  sounding  post  black  metal  guitar  solos  and  leads.

  Vocals  range  from  deep  growls  to  high  pitched  black  metal  screams,  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness  and  nature  themes,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  strong,  powerful, heavy  and  dark  sound  with  the  song  being  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  song  from  Vestiges  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric,  post  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  recording.  RECOMMENDED.

  Next  up  is  Ghaust  a  band  that  plays  a  very  instrumental  form  of  sludge/post/doom  metal.

  Drums  range  from  slow  to  mid  paced  playing  with  only  a  small  amount  of  fast  drumming  and  blast  beats  being  present on  this  recording, while  the  bass  playing  has  a  very  dark  tone  with  riffs  that  follow  the  riffing  that  are  coming  out  of  the  guitars.

  Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  riffs  that  combine  doom,  sludge,  and  post  metal  together  to  create  a  sound  of t heir  own  along  with  some  melody  and  clean  playing  being  used  at  times  and  there  are  no  guitar  solos  and  leads  present  on  their  side  of  the  recording.

  Vocals  and  song  writing  are  all absent  from t heir  side  of  the  recording  with  the  music  being  all  instrumental,  while  the  song  themes  cover  darkness,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  strong  and powerful  sound.

  In  my  opinion  Ghaust  are  a  very  great  sounding  hybrid  of  sludge,  doom  and  post  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Sleep  And  Release".  RECOMMENDED.

  Vestiges  are  a  band  from  Washington  D.C  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  with  a  musical  style  I  would  describe  as  being  atmospheric  post  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2010  album   "The  Descent  Of  Man"  which  was  released  by  Replenish  Records.

  Drums  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  drumming  with  some  blast  beats  being  thrown  into  the  music  at  times,  while  the  synths  bring  a  very  dark  and  atmospheric  sound  to  the  recording,  as  for  the  bass  playing  it  has  a  very  dark  tone  with  riffs  that  follow  the  riffing  that  are  coming  out  of  the  guitars  and  at  times  they  have  a  very  strong  and  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to fast  black  metal  riffs  that  utilize  some  raw  and  primitive  elements  as  well  as  crust,  post  rock,  and  doom  metal  influences  in  the  riffing  as  well  as  some  dark  sounding  melodies  in  addition  there  is  a  small  amount  of  soft  and  clean  playing  being  utilized  at  times,  while  the  lead  guitars  when  they  are  utilized  are  very  distorted  sounding  post  black  metal  guitar  solos  and  leads,  as  for  the  acoustic  guitars  when  they  are  utilized  use  full  chords  to  enhance  the  dark  atmosphere  of  the  album  adding  in  some  progressive  elements.

  Vocals  range  from  deep  to  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  as  well  as  some  crust  style  shouting  being  used  at  times  along  with  some  death  metal  growls,  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  nature  themes,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  dark,  heavy,  raw  and  primitive  sound  to  it  with  the  songs  being  long  and  epic  in  length  and  you  can  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording.

  Drums  range  from  slow,  mid  paced,  to  fast  drumming  with  some  blast  beats  being  utilized  at  times,  while  the  sound  effects  bring  elements  of  drone  and  dark  ambient  to  the  recording,  as  for  the  bass  playing  it  has  a  very  dark  tone  with  riffs  that  follow  the  riffing  that  are  coming  out  of  the  guitars  and  at  times  they  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Next  up  is  Panopticon  a  band  that  plays  a  very  atmospheric  form  of  pagan  post  black  metal.

  Drums  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  drumming  with  some  blast  beats  being  utilized  at  times,  while  the  synths  bring  a  very  dark  and  atmospheric  sound  to  the  recording,  as  for  the  bass  playing  it  has  a  very  strong  and  powerful  sound  with  heavy  riffing  that  dominates  throughout  the  recording.

  Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  atmospheric  post  black  metal  riffs  that  utilize  some  raw  and  primitive  sounding  elements  as  well  as  some  melody  and  pagan  folk  influences  to  create  a  sound  of  their  as  well  as  some  soft  and  clean  playing,  while  the  lead  guitars  are  very  melodic  sounding  post  black  metal  guitar  solos  and  leads,  as  for  the  acoustic  guitars  which  are  only  used  briefly  use  finger  picking  to  bring  an  ethnic  feeling  to  the  recording.

  Vocals  range  from  deep  to  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  that  have  a  very  depressive  tone  to them  at  times  as  well  as  a  brief  use  of  clean  singing,  while  the  lyrics  cover  nature  and  paganism  themes,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  strong,  powerful  and  heavy  sound  where  you  can  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording  with  most  of  the  songs  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  Panopticon  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric,  post  black/pagan  metal  band  with  the  best  music  on  this  split  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical   genre,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "A  Letter".

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  and  post  black  metal,  you  should  add  this  album  to  your  collection.  RECOMMENDED  BUY.
