Saiva/Inlandsvinter/Nordvis Produktion/2023 EP Review

 

  Finland's  solo  project  Saiva  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  moving  from t he  folk  inspired  style  of  pagan  black  metal  from  earlier  releases  and  going  into  more  of  a  dark  ambient  direction  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2023  ep  "Inlandsvinter"  which  will  be  released  on  March  24th  by  Nordvis  Produktion.

  Ambient  style  synths  which  also  use  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys  start  off  the  ep  while  elements  of  folk  music  and  dungeon  synth  can  also  be  heard  at  times.  Both  of  the  tracks  are  also  instrumentals  along  with  each  song  also  sounding  very  different  from  each  other  and  also  adding  in  more  of  a  nature  orientated  atmosphere. 

  On  this  recording  Saiva  moves  away  from  all  vocals  and  black  metal  elements  to  create  2  very  diverse  sounding  ambient  tracks  which  also  add  in  touches  of  folk  music  and  dungeon  synth  while  the  song  themes  focus  on  the  people,  nature  and  spirit  world  of  the  Sampi.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Saiva  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  ambient,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Snövals  över  Rajvoheden".  8  out  of  10.

Saiva/Finnmarkens folk/Nordvis Produktion/2019 EP Re-Issue Review

  Saiva  are  a  band  from  Sweden  that  has  had  an  album  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  folk  inspired  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2013  ep  "Finnmarkens  folk"  which  will  be  re-issued  in  2019  by  Nordvis  Produktion.

  A  very  dark  and  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  ep  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim sounding  black  metal  screams  as  well  as  some  clean  pagan  vocals  also  being  utilized  at  times  and  most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  while  blast  beats  are  added  into  the  faster  sections  of  the  music  along  with  the  tremolo  picking  giving  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  as  well  as  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts,  whistles  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  when  acoustic  guitars  are  utilized  they  bring  in  elements  of  folk  rock  and  folk  instruments  are  added  onto  the  closing  track  which  is  also  an  instrumental.

  On  this  recording  Saiva  played  a  style  of  black  metal  that  was  very  raw  while  also  adding  in  elements  of  folk  rock  at  times,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Swedish  and  cover  Finnish  Folklore,  Nature  and  Paganism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Saiva  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  folk  inspired  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "En  forliden  tid"  and  "Strofer  ur  ett  fjarran  skogsland".  8  out  of  10.

Saiva/Markena Bortom/Nordvis Produktion/2017 CD Review

  Saiva  are  a  solo  project  from  Sweden  that  plays  a  folk  inspired  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2017  album  "Markena  Bottom"  which  will  be  released  in  October  by  Nordvis  Produktion.

  Acoustic  guitars  start  off  the  album  and  also  bring  in  elements  of  folk  music  along  with  some  percussion's  a  few  seconds  later  and  after  a  few  minutes  melodic  pagan  vocals  are  added  onto  the  recording  and  on  the  second  track  clean  yet  distorted  playing  is  added  into  the  music.

  Some  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and epic  in  length  and  after  awhile  grim  black  metal  screams  start  to  make  their  presence  known  along  with  some  melodic  guitar  leads  while  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  in certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  some  songs  also  add  in  a  small  amount  of  atmospheric  synths  and  there  is  also  some  session  work  from  members  of  Tervahaat,  Panopticon  and  Grift.

  Saiva  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  atmospheric  black  metal,  pagan  and  folk  music  and  mixes them  together  to  create  something  very  original,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Swedish  and  cover  ancient  times  and  nature  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Saiva  are  a  very  great  sounding  folk  inspired  black  metal  solo  project  and  if  you  are  looking  for something  original,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Nordmarkens  Alvar"  and  "Nordan".  8  out  of  10.
