Klamm/Misanthropocene/Disharmonia Records/2021 CD Review

 

  Germany's  Klamm  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  more  of  a  melodic  and  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  album  "Misanthropocene"  which  will  be  released  in  June  by  Disharmonia  Records.

  Drum  beats  and  synths  start  off  the  album  while  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction.  A  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  angry  sounding  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

  Clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  recording  while  some  songs  also  add  in  a  small  amount  of  clear  vocals  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  an  avant  garde  vibe.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  some  elements  of  post  metal  also  being  utilized  at  times 

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  along  with  some  growls  also  being  utilized  at  times  as  well  as  the  tracks  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts,  spoken  words  can  also  be  heard  briefly .

 The  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  and  as  the  album  progresses  acoustic  guitars  are  also  brought  into  the  music.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  a  dystopian  future  and  political  themes  which  also  shows  inspirations  from  the  writings  of  Orwell,  Huxley,  Bradburry  and  Atwood.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Klamm  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  melodic  and  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Sun  Invocation"  "Anthropocene"  and  "Death  Worship".  8  out  of  10.

Klamm/Ernte/Seventh Star Records/2015 CD Review

  Klamm  are  a  band  from  Germany  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  musical  style  on  this  recording  they  refer  to  as  dark atmospheric  sophisticated  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2015  album  "Ernte"  which  will  be  released  in  July  by  Seventh  Star  Records.

  Acoustic  guitar  playing  starts  off  the  album  giving  the  songs  a  progressive  and  folk  music  along  with  some  clean  singing  vocals  which  are  also  used  again  on  later  tracks  a  few  seconds  later  and  after  the  intro  melodic  guitar  leads  make  their  presence  known  on  the  recording  and  also  add  in  a  touch  of  post  rock  into  the  bands  musical  style.

  When  the  music  gets  fast  it  has  more  of  a  raw  black  metal  vibe  along  with  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  while  the  vocals  are  also  very  rough  and  use  screams  while  also  having  melody  that  is  very  close  to  pagan  black  metal  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

All of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  music  going  for  more  of  a  progressive  and  post  style  of  black  metal  and  a  good  portion  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  acoustic  guitars  also  return  in  some parts  of  the  songs  and  as  the  album  progresses  the  vocals  get  more  grimmer  and  the  music  also  starts  adding  in  more  experimental  elements  into  their  style  of  black  metal  and  some songs  also  bring  in  a  small  amount  of  folk  instruments  and  keyboards.

  Klamm  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  on  this  recording  that  is  very  modern  while  also  keeping  the  folk  elements  of  previous  recordings  while  also  adding  in  more  progressive, avant  garde  and  post metal  elements,  the  production  sounds  very  powerful  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  German  and  cover  abstract  personal  experiences  and  socio-critical  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from Klamm  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  the  atmospheric,  post  and  avant  garde  forms  of  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Windsaat"  "Ernte"  and  "Zahltag".  8  out  of  10.

Klamm/Frostfluss/2008 Demo Review

  Klamm  are  a  band  from  Germany  that  plays an atmospheric  and ambient  form of  black  metal  with  elements  of  folk  music  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released 2008  demo  "Frostfluss".

 "Ferne  Lufte"  begins with  nature  sounds,  melodic  guitar  leads  and  acoustic  guitars  which  utilize  both  finger  picking  and  full  chords  and  after  awhile  you  can  hear  the  bass  guitars  and  drum beats  along  with  some whispers  and  a  full  chords  heavy  guitar  riffs  and  grim  black  metal  vocals  start  kicking  in  and  a  couple  of  minutes  later  the  music  gets  slightly  faster  along  wit h  some  post  black  metal  style  guitar  leads  before going  back  to  a  slower  direction  and  combing  the  black  metal  and  melodic  vocals  together and  halfway  through  the  song  the  music  returns  back  to  its  folk  music  roots  while also  mixing  in  some  distorted  elements  later  on with the  acoustics  and  towards  the  end  the  black  metal  elements  do  make  a  return.

  "Ein  gruner Schimmer"  begins  with  some  nature  sounds  and  then  bringing  in  some  acoustic  guitars along  with  some synths  as  well  as  some  distorted  melodic  guitar  riffs  a  few  seconds  later  and  this  song  is  an  instrumental  under 2  minutes.

  "Alptraum"  begins  with  some  grim  black  metal  screams,  heavy  and  melodic  guitar  riffs  and  drums  along  with  some  guitar  leads  coming  in and  out  of  the  song  and  you  can  hear  the  bass  guitars  in the  background  and  they  take  over  for  awhile  along  with  some  synths  before  adding  in  a  brief  whisper  and  going back  to  the  melodic  guitar  riffing.

  "Erwachen"  begins  with  some  acoustic  guitar  playing  which  brings  folk  elements  into  the  song  and  a  few  seconds  later  drum  beats, bass  guitars  and  guitar  leads  start  coming  in  before  getting  a  little  bit  heavy  along  with  some  grim  black  metal  vocals  and  after  awhile  the  folk  elements  return  along  with  some  synths  and  then  melodic  clean  singing  vocals  start  coming  into  the  song and  towards  the  end  there  is  a  brief  use  of  fast  parts.

  "Frostfluss"  begins  with  some atmospheric  synths  and acoustic  guitars  which  lead  up  to  some  whispered  vocals   and  a  minute  later  heavy  and  melodic  guitar  and  bass  riffs  come  into  the  song  along  with  some  drums  which  lead  up  to  some  blackened  metal  vocals  and  post  rock  style  guitar  leads  and  towards  the  end  there  is  a  brief  sue  of  melodic  chanting  being  utilized  before  the  high  pitched  black metal  screams take  over  and  the  song  closes  with  the  acoustic  guitars.

  "Fernweh"  begins  with  some  atmospheric  synths  which  bring  in  elements  of  ambient  into the  music  before  adding  in  some acoustic  guitars  along  with  some  bass  guitars  and  drums  a  few seconds  alter  which  leads  up to some melodic  clean singing  vocals a s  well  as  some whispers  and  a  couple  of  minutes  later  the  music  gets  a  little  bit  more  heavier  with  some  grim  black  metal  screams  and  melodic  riffing  along  with  some  faster  parts  and  a  brief  use  of  blast  beats  which  also  leads  up  to  some guitar  leads  that  come  in  and  out  of  the  song  and  halfway  through  the  song  the  music  goes  more  into  an  ambient  direction  for  awhile  along  with  some  returning  whispers  before  returning  to  a  more  melodic  black  metal  direction  and  the  song  closes  with  some  melodic  chanting.  

  Song  lyrics  are  written in  German  and  cover  nature themes,  while  the  production  has  a  very  strong,  powerful,  and  heavy  sound  for  being  a  self  released  recording  where  you  can  hear  all  of  the  musical instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording  along  with  a  couple  of  the  songs  being  very  long  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  Klamm  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric  black  metal  band  with  element s of  ambient  and  folk  music  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  demo.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Ferne  Lufte"  and  "Erwachen".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.
