Eschatos/Maere/2017 EP Review

  Latvia's  Eschatos  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  into  more  of  an  experimental  and  progressive  style  of  black  metal  and this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2017  ep  "Maere"which  was  released  in  December.

  Atmospheric  drones  along  with  some  tribal  style  beats  start  off  the  ep  along  with  some  synths  and  clean  guitars  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  an  experimental  and  progressive  feeling  and  after  awhile  melodic  female  vocals  are  added  into  the  music.

  Both  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic in  length  while  elements  of  post  rock  are  also  utilized  at  times  and  they  also  mix  the  progressive  and  experimental  parts  into  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music  which  also  uses  a  great  amount  of  black  metal  screams  and  the  riffs  also  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  melody.

  Death  metal  growls  are  also  added  into  certain  sections  of   the  recording  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  some  organs  and  psychedelic  elements  also  being  added  into  the  music  at  times  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly  on  the  second  tack.

  On  these  2  tracks  Eschatos  brings  in  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  progressive  and  experimental  sounding,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  death, nihilism  and  doom  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  from  Eschatos  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  experimental  and  progressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Luminary  Eye  Against  The  Sky".  8  out  of  10.

Eschatos/The Grand Noir/2015 CD Review

  Eschatos  are  a  band from  Latvia  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  progressive  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2015  album  "The  Grand  Noir".

  Avant  garde  sounds  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  experimental  and  ambient  elements  and  you  can  also  hear  melodic  guitar  leads  in  the  background  and  some  of  the  drum  beats  have  a  tribal  feeling  to  them  and  on  the  second  track  the  musi9c  starts  going  into  more  of  a  progressive  black  metal  direction  along  with  some  grim  screams.

  Elements  of  thrash  can  be  heard  quite  a  bit  throughout the  recording  and  the  fast  parts  also  bring s in  more  of  a  raw  style  of  black  metal  along  with a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  spoken  word  parts  can  be  heard  in  some  of  the  songs.

  A  couple  of  the  tracks  are  long  and  epic  in  length  and  some  of  the  riffs  also  bring  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  and  there  is  also  a  brief  use  of  clean  singing  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  the  cd  version  closes  with  a  cover  of  Silencer['s  "Sterile  Nails  And  Thunderbowles"  and  it  sounds  different  from  the  original  and  changed  around  a  bit  to  fit  in  more  with  the  bands  musical  style.

  Eschatos creates  a  black  metal  album  that  is  very  progressive  and  also  displays  a  great  amount  of  talent  and  skills  as  musicians,  the  production  sounds  very  powerful  for  being  a  self  released  recording  while  the  lyrics  cover  philosophical  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another great sounding  recording  from  Eschatos  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  progressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "In  Whole  Alone  Is  Good  And  Elsewhere  Nowhere"  and  "Feast  Of  A  Thousand  Beasts".  8  out  of  10.

Eschatos/Hierophanies/2013 CD Review

  Eschatos  are  a  band  from  Latvia  that  plays  a  mixture  of  traditional  and  post  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2013  album  "Hierophanes".

  Drums  range  from  slow  to  mid  paced  playing  with  not  much  in  the  way  of  fast  drumming  or  blast  beats,  while  the  bass  playing  has  a  very  strong  and  powerful  sound  with  heavy  riffing  that  dominates  throughout  the  recording,  as  for  the  keyboards  they  are  only  used  on  the  instrumental  and  they  bring  a  dark  sound  to  the recording.

  Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow  to  mid  paced  riffs  that  combine  traditional  and  post  black  metal  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own  along  with  some  thrash  influences  in  the  riffing,  while  the  lead  guitars  are  very  melodic  sounding  black  metal  guitar  solos  and  leads,  as  for  the  acoustic  guitars  they  are  only  used  briefly  and  use  finger  picking  to  enhance  the  dark  atmosphere  of  the  recording.

  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  and  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  with  some  spoken  word  parts  and  clean  singing,  while  the  lyrics  cover  philosophical  themes,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  strong, powerful  and  heavy  sound  where  you  can  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording  with  some  of  the  songs  being  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In my  opinion  Eschatos  are  a  very  great  sounding  black  metal  band  with  post  and  thrash  elements and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Crusaders  Of  Sodom"  and  "Erset  La  Tari".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.
