Iku-Turso/Wolfheart/Purity Through Fire/2025 EP Review

 

  Finland/Netherlands's  Iku-Turso  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  an  old  school  form  of  pagan  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2025  ep  "Wolfheart"  which  will  be  released  in  June  by  Purity  Through  Fire.

  A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  ep  while  a  couple  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  vocals  being  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  the  keyboards  also  give  the  recording  more  of  an  atmospheric  touch.

  Most  of  the  music  is  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  era  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  recording  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  one  song  also  introducing  viking  style  chants  onto  the  recording,  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  briefly  as  well  as  one  track  also  being  an  Emperor  cover.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  Paganism,  Darkness  and  Death  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Iku-Turso  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  old  school  pagan  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Pagan  beasts"  and  "Beyond  The  Great  Vast  Forest".  8  out  of  10.

Iku-Turso/Ikuinen Kirous/Purity Through Fire/2023 EP Review

 

  Finland/Netherlands's  Iku-Turso  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  the  old  school  style  of  pagan  black  metal  from  their  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2023  ep  "Ikuinen  Kirous"  which  will  be  released  in  october  by  Purity  Through  Fire.

  A  very  dark,  heavy  and  melodic  sound  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  some  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  a  few  seconds  later.  Keyboards  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  while  the  music  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  era  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast b eats  can b e  heard.

  When  tremolo  picking  is  added  into  the  faster  riffing  they  also  give  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  The  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  yet  old  school  style  along  with  some  tracks  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  clear  vocals  as  well  as  the  music  also  having  its  atmospheric  moments  and  the  closing  track  is  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  On  this  recording  Iku-Turso  goes  back  to  the  mid  90's  era  of  black  metal.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Finnish  and  cover  Paganism,  Darkness  and  Death  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Iku-Turso  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  old  school  pagan  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  " Nkotimsefuopua"  "Een  Zucht  Van  Verdriet"  and  Thornspawn  Chalice".  8/5  out  of  10.

Iku-Turso/Into Dawnless Realms/Korpituli Productions/Wolfspell Records/2022 Full Length Review

 

  Finland's  Iku-Turso  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  more  of  an  old  school  form  of  pagan  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their 2022  album  "Into  Dawnless  Realms"  which  will  be  released  in  May  as  a  joint  effort  between   Korpituli  Productions  and  Wolfspell  Records. 

  Raw  tremolo  picking  starts  off  the  album  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats.  Synths  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  recording  and  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  an  atmospheric  feeling  along  with  the  vocals  being  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Most  of  the  music  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  Nordic  second  wave  style  and  all  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length,  clear  vocals  can  also be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  album.  Spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing  is  also  added  on  the  closing  song.

  On  this  recording  Iku-Turso  remain  true  to  the  old  school  style  of  pagan  black  metal  that  they  have  established  on  previous  releases.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  a  mixture  of  English  and  Finnish  and  cover  Paganism,  Darkness  and  Nature  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  from  Iku-Turso  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  old  school  pagan  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Wrath  of  The  Woesome  Woods"  and  "Valor".  8  out  of  10.

  Finland/Netherlands's  Iku-Turso  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  more  of  an  old  school  style  of  pagan  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  ep  "At  The  Crack  Of  Dawn"  which  was  released  by  Korpituli  Productions.

  A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  some  grim  black  metal  screams  a  few  seconds  later.  When  the  music  speeds  up a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  along  with  some  atmospheric  sounding  synths  in  the  background.

  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  music  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  era.  The  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  as  well  as  one  of t he  tracks  also  being  a cover  of  Ulver's  "Wold  And  The  night".

  On  this  recording  Iku-Turso  remain  true  to  the  old  school  style  of  pagan  black  metal  that  they  have  established  on  previous  releases.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Dutch  and  cover  paganism,  darkness  and  death  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Iku-Turso  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  old  school  pagan  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "At  The  Crack  of  Dawn".  8  out  of  10.

Iku-Turso/Pakana/Wolfspell Records/2020 CD Review

  Finland/Netherlands's  Iku-Turso  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  into  more  of  an  old  school  pagan  black  metal  direction  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  album  "Pakana"  which  will  be  released  on  May  15th  by  Wolfspell  Records.

  Tribal  style  drumming  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  melodic  and  grim  shamanistic  chants  a  few  seconds  later.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  synths  also  give  the  songs  more  of  an  atmospheric  feeling  when  they  are  utilized  and  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

  The  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams.  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  bringing  in  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

  Most  of  the  music  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  second  wave  tradition  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  one  track  also  introducing  spoken  word  parts  onto  the  recording  and  as  the  album  progresses  some  of  the  guitar  leads  also  start  bringing  in  more  of  a  modern  and  atmospheric  style.

  Acoustic  guitars  are  also  added  on  a  later  track  and  also  add  in  a  touch  of  folk  music  and  the  closing  track  also  introduces  flutes  onto  the  recording. The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  a  concept  album  based  upon  a  pagan's  protagonist's  journey  at  the  unforgiving  wilderness of  ancient  Kainuu  in  the  days  of  the  old  gods.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Iku-Turso  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  old  school  pagan  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Kuolemason"  "Ultionis"  and  "Solace".  8  out  of  10.

Iku-Turso/Storm Over Isengard/Wolfspell Records/His Wounds/2019 EP Review

  Iku -Turso are  a  band  with  members  from  Finland  and  the  Netherlands  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and plays  a  folk  influenced  form  of  pagan  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2019  album  "Storm  Over  Isengard"  which  was  released  as  a  joint  effort  between  Wolfspell  Records  and  His  Wounds.

  A  very  heavy  and  melodic  sound  starts  off  the  ep  while  folk  instruments  are  also  utilized  at  times  along  with  some  pagan  singing  and  chants  also  being  used  at  times,  The  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent amount  of  melody  as  well  as  the  vocals  being  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams.

  Synths  can  also  be  heard  at  times  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  The  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts,  acoustic  guitars  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  the  ep  closes  with  a  cover  of  Satyricon's  "Jij  Die  God  Hat".  8  out  of  10.

  On  this  recording  Iku -Turso  brings  in  a  style  of  pagan  black  metal  that  is  very  raw  and  also  mixes  in  folk  music  elements.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Finnish  and  cover  Paganism  themes  with  some  inspiration  from  the  writings  of  J.R.R Tolkien.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  recording  from  Iku -Turso   and  if  you are  a  fan  of  folk  influenced  pagan  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Winterwoods"  and  "Storming  The  Isengard".  8  out  of  10.

Kalmankantaja/Iku-Turso/Ikuinen Tuli/Wolfspell Records/2018 Split CD Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  album  between  Finland's  Kalmankantaja  and  Iku-Turso  called  "Ikuinen  Tuli"  which  will  be  released  in  April  by  Wolfspell  Records  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Kalmankantaja  a  band  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  an  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out with  some  melodic  guitar  leads  and  heavy  riffs  along  with  some  grim  black  metal  screams  a  few  seconds  later  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also b ring  in  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

  Throughout  their  side  of  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  as  well  as  all  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Finnish  and  cover  nature,  solitude  and  nature  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording from  Kalmankantaja  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw  and  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Tuonelan  Enkeli".

  Next  up  is  Iku-Turso  a  band  that  plays  a  keyboard  orientated  form  of  black  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  atmospheric  sounds  and  heavy  riffs  while  keyboards  are  also  mixed  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  along  with  the  riffs  also  using  a  decent  amount  of  melody  as  well  as  some  spoken  word  parts  and  the  vocals a re  mostly  grim  black  metal  screams,.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  a  more  raw  feeling  while  the  songs  also bring  in a   great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  most  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length,  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  and  the  music  sounds  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  early  90's and  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  briefly  on  the  last  track,  the  production  sounds  very  raw  and  old  school  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark and  philosophical  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Iku-Turso  are  a  very  great sounding  old  school  keyboard  orientated  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "An  Organism  In  An  Azoic  Era"  and  "Mitosis  of  The  Skull".

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  raw ,  atmospheric  and  old  school  black metal,  8  out  of  10.
