Mortuary Drape/Black Mirror/Peaceville Records/2023 Full Length Review

 

  Italy's  Mortuary  Drape  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  an  old  school  and  occult  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2023  album  "Black  Mirror"  which  will  be  released  in  November  by  Peaceville  Records.

  Keyboards  start  off  the  album  and  also  brings  in  the  atmosphere  of  a  classic  horror  movie  soundtrack  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  along  with  a  few  growls.  Melodies  can  also b e  heard  in  some  of  the  heavier  riffing  as  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  more  of  an  early  80's  extreme  metal  style.  Influences  of  death  and  traditional  metal  can  also be  heard  at  times  at  times  while t he  songs  also  mix  in  both  first  and  second  wave  elements  and  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  along  with  some  tracks  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing.  Keyboards  are  also  mixed  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times  and  throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts,  clear  vocals  are  also  utilized  briefly   The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  magickal  rites,  real  events  and  spells  that  are  in  a  parallel  world  that  bind  us  to  our  past  lives.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Mortuary  Drape  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  old  school  occult  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Restless  Death"  "Drowned  In  Silence"  "Nocturnal  Coven"  and  "Fading  Flowers  Spell".  8  out  of  10.

Mortuary Drape/Wisdom Vibration Repent/Peaceville Records/2022 EP Review

 

  Mortuary  Drape  are  a  band  from  Italy  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  has  a  history  that  goes  back  to  the  80's  and  plays  an  occult  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2022  ep  "Wisdom  Vibration  Repent"  which  will b e  released  in  February  by  Peaceville  Records.

  Clean  playing  starts  off  the  ep  before  going  into  a  heavier  musical  direction  while  the  vocals are mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams.  Dark  sounding  melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  the  music  also  being  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  80's  to  early  90's  era.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them    while  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  elements  of  doom  metal.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  also  remain  true  to  an  old  school  style  along  with  some  touches  of  the  first  wave  era  also  being  added  into  the  mid  tempo  sections  of  the  tracks.

  Hhen  the  music  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  along  with  one  of  the  songs  being  a  cover  of  Mercyful  Fate's  "Nightmare  by  Thy  Name"  which  also  adds  in  some  clean  vocals  and  when  spoken  word  parts  are  utilized  they  also  give  the  music  more  of  a  ritualistic  feeling.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Occultism,  Black  Magick  and  Necromancy  themes. 

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Mortuary  Drape  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  old  school  occult  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "In  A  Candle  Flame"  and  "Where  Everything  Falls".  8 out  of  10.

Mortuary Drape/Necromantic Doom Returns/Iron Tyrant/2018 Compilation Album Review

  Mortuary  Drape  are  a  band  from  Italy  that  has  been  around  fro  more  than  30  years  and  plays  an  occult  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  compilation  "Necromantic  Doom  Returns"  which  will  be  released  on  June  30th  by  Iron  Tyrant  and  consists  of  their  87  and  89  demos  and  a  live  performance  from  90.

  A  very  dark  sounding  intro  with  ritualistic  synths  start  off  the  compilation  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  use  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  along  with  the  vocals  being  mostly  angry  black  metal  screams.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  compilation  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  done  in  an  80's  first  wave  black  metal  style  along  with  some  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  as  well  as  some  clean  playing  also being  used  at  times  and  the  ritualistic  elements  that  where  also  presented  on  the  demo  also  return  on  some  of the  later  tracks  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  The  second  demo  also  shows  acoustic  guitars  and  ritualistic  spoken  word  parts  being  introduced  into  the  music  while  the  black  metal  screams  also  start  evoking  a  more  grim  atmosphere  along  with  the  first  wave  style  still  influencing  the  vocal  approach  and  the  riffs  also  start  adding  in  a  small  amount  of dark  sounding  melodies  and  the  live  tracks  also  display  a  great  amount  of  raw  aggression.

  Mortuary  Drape  played  a  style  of  occult  black  metal  that  was  very  much  ahead  of  its  time  while  also  being  heavily  influenced  by  the  first  wave  style  and  they  would  go  on  to  influence  later  bands,  the  production  sounds  very  raw  and  old  school  while  the  lyrics  cover  Black  Magick,  Occultism  and  Necromancy  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Mortuary  Drape  are  a  very  great  sounding  occult  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  compilation.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Into  The  Catacomba"  "Obsessed  By  Necromancy"  "Pentagram"  and  "Inquisition".  8/5  out  of  10.
