Blodhemn/H7/Indie Recordings/2014 CD Review

  Blodhemn  are  a  band  from  Norway  that  plays  a  very  raw  and  melodic  form  of  Norwegian  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "H7"  which  will  be  released  in  November  by  Indie  Recordings.

  A  very  heavy  and  technical  style  black  metal  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  grim  screams  and  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  and  thrash  influences  being  utilized  and  after  awhile  angry  shouts  are  added  into  the  music  along  with  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  the  band  also  brings  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  to  their  Norwegian  black  metal  sound  in  both  the  riffing  and  solos  and  the  band s musical  style  takes  the  rawness  of  the  early  90's  Norwegian  black  metal  bands  and  mixes  it  with  the  more  melodic  side  of  the  Swedish  bands  of  the  same  era.

  A  good  portion  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  band  also  makes  every  song  sound  different  from  each  other  while  also  keeping  everything  in  a  true  black  metal  direction  and  at  times  small  amounts  of  distorted  and  non  distorted  clean parts  can  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  a  few  seconds  of  psychedelic  sounds and  they  are  only  used  briefly  with  the  music  mainly  focusing  on  a  raw  style  of  Norwegian  black  metal.

  Blodhemn  plays  a  style  of  Norwegian  black  metal  that  goes  back  to  the  90's  era  of  the  genre  while  also  having  the  talent  and  skill  of  the  modern  bands  and  they  play  this  style  the  way  it  was  meant  to  be  heard,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Norwegian  and  cover  darkness  and  nature  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Blodhemn  are  a  very  great  sounding  Norwegian  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Sletted  Av  Tid"  "Veiten"  and  "Holmengraa".  8  out  of  10.

Itnuveth/The Way Of The Berserker/Xtreem Music/2014 CD Review

  Itnuveth  are  a  band  from  Spain  that  plays  a  very  raw  and  melodic  form  of  pagan/black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "The  Way  Of  The  Berserker"  which  was  released  by  Xtreem  Music.

  Wind  sounds,  acoustic  guitars  and  spoken  word  parts  start  off  the  album  and  after  the  intro  the  music  starts  going  for  more  of  an  epic  and  atmospheric  raw  black  metal  sound  along  with  some  melodic  pagan  metal  guitar  solos  and  leads  as  well  as  a  great  amount  of  grim  screams  and  the music  also  retains  the  nature  sounds  and  acoustic  guitars  and  also  bring  them  back  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  they  add  more  of  a  medieval  feeling  to  the  band s musical  style.

  You  can  hear  some  elements  of  classic  metal  being  utilized  at  times  and  the band  also  brings  in  a  good  amount  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  throughout  the  recording  along  with  some  blast  beats  and  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  bring  in  a  very  raw  black  metal  feeling  and  as  the  album  progresses  the  spoken  word  parts  do  make  a  return  before  returning  back  to  an  epic  pagan/black  metal  sound  and  they  close  the  album  with  an  acoustical  piece.  

  Itnuveth  plays  a  style  of  pagan/black  metal  that  brings in  the  raw,  melodic  and  epic  sides  of  this  genre  and  combines  them  to  create  an  album  that  displays  some  of  the  best  element s of  the  genre,  the  production  sounds  very  powerful  while  the  lyrics  cover  Paganism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Itnuveth  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw  and  melodic  pagan/black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Legacy  Of  A  Dead  Wolf"  "Skoll"  and  "Northern  Demons".  8  out  of  10.

Frozen Ocean/Norse/Bylec-Tum/2014 Cassette Compilation Review

  Frozen  Ocean  are  a  1  man  band  from  Russia  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  mixture  of  atmospheric  black  metal  and  ambient  on  the  album  reviewed  while  the  music  on  this  compilation  is  more  on  the  raw  side  of  this  genre  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  cassette  compilation  "Norse"  which  was  released  by  Bylec-Tum  and  consists  of  his  2011  album  "Likegyldig  Raseri"  and  2013  ep  "Vanviddsanger"  and  another  full  length  from  the  same  year  "Natt  over  Meg".

  The  first  album  on  the  compilation  starts  out  with  a  very  distorted  and  atmospheric  black  metal  sound  that  also  brings  in  a  good  amount  of  melody  while  some  of  the  later  tracks  bring  in  the  more  raw  and  old  school  side  of  the  genre  along  with  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  being  utilized  at  times  and  on  the  3rd  track  high  pitched  screams  are  finally  added  into  the  music  and  they  add  more  of  a  grim  feeling  when  they  are  used,  after  awhile  there  is  a  good  mixture  of  both  instrumental  and  vocal  tracks  while  most  of  the  tracks  are  very  short  in  length  while  most  of  the  music  focuses  on  the  rawer  and  old  school  style  of  black  metal  than  what  has  been  presented  on  the  later  recordings,  and  as  the  album  progresses  there  is one  track  that  displays  elements  of  harsh  noise  and  tortured  voices  while  the  following  tracks  go  back  to  a  normal  style  of  black  metal.

  The  second  album  on  this  compilation  which  is  also  an  ep  starts  out  with  synths  and  a more  atmospheric  dark  ambient  sound  than  what  was  presented  on  the  first  recording  while  the  following  track  sees  the  music  returning  to  more  of  a  fast  and  raw  black  metal  sound  along  with  some  blast  beats  and  high  pitched  screams, the  music  that  is  presented  on  the  ep  also  continues  the  raw  and  old  school  tradition  that  was  presented  on  the  previous  album  reviewed  while  also  bringing  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  the  last  track  brings  in  the  sounds  of  oceans  as  well  as  having  more  synths  and  keys  being  utilized

  The  final  album  on  the  compilation  starts  out  with  a  very  powerful  sounding  bass  line  before  going  into  a  fast  and  raw  black  metal  direction  along  with  grim  and  evil  high  pitched  screams  and  the  songs  on  this  recording  go  for  more  of  an  old  school  90's  style  of  black  metal  while  also  bringing  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  that  bring  back  a  primitive  style  of  the  genre  that  is  very  rarely  utilized  this  days,  after  awhile  the  music  starts  adding  in  melody  along  with  a  small  amount  of  chanting  as  well  as  bringing  in  a  good  mixture  of  vocals  and  instrumental  tracks,  after  a  few  songs  that  are  in  a  pure  black  metal  vein  there  is  a  brief  use  of  atmospheric  and  clean  sounds  which  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  parts  on  later  tracks  briefly  before  going  back  to  the  style  that  is  heard  on  most  of  the  tracks  while  the  softer  parts  also  make  a  return  at  times.

  On  these  3  albums  Frozen  Ocean  played  a  more  fast  and  raw  style  of  black  metal  than  what  was  presented  on  the  later  recordings  while  you  can  still  hear  a  small  amount  of  melody  and  atmosphere  in  the  music  at  times,  the  productions  sounds  very  dark,  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  winter,  death  and  depression  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  compilation  from  Frozen  Ocean  and   if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw  and  old  school  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  cassette.  8  out  of  10.

Lord Of Pagathan/Nekros Phillia/Woodcut Records/2014 CD Review

  Lord  Of  Pagathorn  are  a  band  from  Finland  that  plays  a  very  raw  and  blasphemous  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "Nekros  Phillia"  which  will  be  released  on  Halloween  by  Woodcut  Records.

  Wind  and  thunder  sounds  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  acoustic  guitars,  nature  sounds  and  demonic  chanting  and  after  the  intro  the  music  goes  into  more  of  a  fast  raw  black  metal  direction  that  also  brings  in  blast  beats  and  high  pitched  screams  as  well  as  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  Dark  sounding  melodies  can  be  heard  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  along  with  some  whispers  being  added  into  the  music  at  times  and  the  band  also  brings  back  acoustic  guitars in  certain  sections  of  the  album  and  all  of  the  songs  are  divided  into  chapter  and  have  as  many  as  2  or  3  different  parts  being  added  almost  every  track.

  All  of  the  songs  have  a  90's  style  of  black  metal  to  them  as  well  as  going  back  to  the  old  school  Finnish  sound  and  as  the  album  progresses  there  are  a  few  intros  added  onto  the  recording  that  gives  the  music  more  of  a  ritualistic  feeling  while  the  main  focus  remains  on  a  very  raw  and  true  style  of  black  metal  along  with  a  few  tracks  that  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Lord  Of  Pagathorn  plays  a  very  true  style  of  old  school  Finnish  black  metal  with  their  music,  bringing  in  a  90's  style  of  the genre  and  also  making  it  more diverse  and  ritualistic  while  also  having  a  very  raw  approach,  the  production  sound s very  dark,  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark,  blasphemous  and  occult  themes  while  also  having  a  concept  relating  to  them.

  In  my  opinion  Lord  of  Pagathorn  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw  and  blasphemous  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Chapter.  1  -Part  I -"The  Asylum  Gates"  Part  II  "The  Path  leads  Astray"  "Chapter  III  Part  I  "Buried  Secrets"  Part  II  "Sinister  Sister  Inn"  and  "Chapter  VI  "Pt.  I  "Full  Moon  Necrophillia"  Pt  II  "Ritual'.  8  out of  10.

Sloth Herder/Horde Of The Eclipse/Unholy Anarchy Records/2014 Split CD Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  album  between  Maryland's  Sloth  Herder  and  Pennsylvania's  Horde  of  The  Eclipse  which  was  released  by  Unholy  Anarchy  in  2014  and  we  will  start  of  the  review  with  Sloth  herder  a  band  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black  metal,  sludge,  and  grindcore.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  very  dark  sounding  black  metal  guitar  riff  along  with  some  grim  screams  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  leads  to  the  band  adding  in  elements  of  crust,  sludge  and  post  hardcore  while  also  keeping  around  the  black  metal  influence  and  after  awhile  the  band  starts  bringing  in  a good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  their  side  of  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  on  the  later  tracks  the  music  gets  more  grindcore  influenced  and  also  starts  incorporating  brutal  sounding  blast  beats  while  they  also  keep  around  elements  of  sludge,  doom  and  black  metal  which  also  adds  more  diversity  to  their  sound.

  Just  like  with  their  previous  releases  Sloth  Herder  continue  their  grindcore  influenced  black/sludge  metal  sound  and  they  also  have  more  of  a  darker  approach  this  time  around,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  hateful  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Sloth  herder  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black  metal,  doom,  sludge,  and  grind,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Rosicrux"  and  "Acts  Of  Savagery".

  Next  up  is  Horde  of  the  Eclipse  a  band  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  very  raw  and  melodic  form  of  black  metal.

  A  very  dark,  distorted  and  atmospheric  drone  sound  starts  off  their  side  of  the  split  and  after  a  minute  acoustic  guitars  are  added  into  the  music  which  leads  up  to  a  very  fast,  raw  and  heavy  black  metal  sound  that  also  bring s in  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  before  slowing  down  and  adding  in  some  melodies.

  There  is  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  in  the  songs  along  with  a  very  powerful  bass  guitar  sound  and  when  vocals  are  added  into  the  music  they  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  a  small  amount  of  death  metal  growls  are  used  at  times  and  the  solos  and  leads  the  band  uses  add  even  more  to  the  melodic  side  of  their  black  metal  sound  and  they  also  keep  around  the  acoustic  guitars  from  the  intro  and  add  them  in  their  songs  fro  a  few  seconds  and  on  the  last  track  the  band  adds  elements  of  thrash  into  their  musical  sound.

 Hordes  Of  The  Eclipse  remain  true  to  their  raw  and  melodic  approach  to  black  metal  bringing  in  a  very  heavy  sound  that  also  uses  a  death  of  metal  and  they  also  have  the  best  music  on  the  split,  the  production  sound s very  heavy  and  powerful  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness  and  occultism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Horde  Of  The  Eclipse  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Unleashing  Pariah".

  In  conclusion  i  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  the  more  open  minded  fans  of  black  metal.  8  out  of  10.           

T.O.M.B/Total Occultic Mechanical Blasphemy III/Todestrieb/2014 Compilation Album Review

  T.O.M.B  are   a band  from  Pennsylvania  that  has  recently  had  an  album  reviewed  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  mixture  of  occult  black  metal,  ambient  and  noise  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  compilation  album  "Total Occultic Mechanical Blasphemy III"  which  was  released  by  Todestrieb  in  2014  and  contains  their  2008  and  2013  albums  along  with  a  bonus  live  ritual.

  A  very  dark  and  distorted  sound  starts  off  the  first  album  on  this  compilation  before  adding  in  elements  of  harsh  noise  and  grim,  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  on  the  second  track  guitars  are  added  into  the  music  and  they  bring  in  even  more  of  a  black  metal  sound  to  the  bands  musical  style.

  In  the  guitar  parts  you  can  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  pace d and  fast  parts  along  with  some  blast  beats  and  fast,  raw  tremolo  picking  and  they  also  add  in  small  amounts  of  melody  at  times  and  on  the  later  tracks  the  take  the  black  metal  parts  and  mix  them  in  with  the  dark  ambient  and  harsh  noise  elements  and  the  music  also  gets  more  ritualistic  as  the  album  progresses.

  Once  the  compilation  goes  into  the  second  album  the  music  starts  to  get  a  lot  more  noise  influenced  and  the  music  also  follows  a  very  ritualistic  orientated  concept  as  well  as  avoiding  the  black  metal  sound  on  the  first  album  and  on  the  last  track  they  do  a  live  20  minute  live  ritual  that  starts  out  with  some  spoken  word  samples  and  you  can  also  hear  the  noise  sounds  in  the  background  which  get  even  more  powerful  as  the  song  progresses  and  they  also  add  in  some  occult  chanting and  evil  sounding  organs  as  well  as  bringing  back  in  some  elements  of  black  metal.


  T.O.M.B  covers  a  lot  of  ground  with  their  music  showing  a  very  raw  and  evil  side  on  their  black  metal  material  while  the  ambient  and  noise  elements  are  very  dark,  ritualistic  and  occult  sounding,,  the  production  sound s very  dark,  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  Occultism,  Demonology,  Rituals  and  Left  Hand  Path  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  T.O.M.B  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  occult  black  metal,  dark  ambient,  harsh  noise  and  ritualistic  music,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Shaare  Moth"  "Fog  Ritual"  "Christening  Of  Demons'  and  "live  Ritual".  8  out  of  10.

Hornwood Fell/Self Titled/Avantgarde Music/2014 CD Review

  Hornwood  Fell are  a  band  from  Italy  that  plays  a  very  raw  and  nature  orientated  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  titled  2014  album  which  was  released  by  Avantgarde  Music.

  A  very  heavy  black  metal  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  grim  screams  and  blast  beats  which  are  a  lot  faster  than  the  guitar  riffs  which  also  speed  up  after  awhile  and  adds  in  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  you  can  also  hear  a  great  amount  of  melody  being  added  into  their  raw  black  metal  sound  at  times.

  There  is  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  present  throughout  the  recording  along  with  the  bass  guitars  bringing  in  a  very  powerful  sound  during  the  faster  parts  and  as  the  album  progresses  acoustic  guitars  can  be  heard  in  some  of  the  songs  and  they  also  take  the  music  into  more  of  a  darker  direction.

  Hornwood  Fell  plays  a  very  aggressive  style  that  is  heavily  influenced  by  the  Norwegian  bands  that  where  in  their  prime  during   the  90's  and  they  go  back  to  the  days  when  that  country  was  still  releasing  some  of  the  best  albums  in  the  genre,  the  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Italian  and  cover  nature  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Hornwood  Fell  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw,  nature  orientated  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Cerqua"  "L  'ira"  and  "VinterFresa  Part  1  ".  8  out  of  10.

Varituuk/Jrone/2014 EP Review

  Varituuk  returns  with  another  recording  this  time  going  for  more  of  a  blackened  doom/drone  sound  and  this is  a  review  of  his  self  released  2014  ep  "Jrone".

  A  very  dark  and  atmospheric  drone  sound  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  some  soundscapes  and  after  3  minutes  the  music  starts  to  add  in  guitars  and  drums  which  also  takes  the  music  into  more  of  a  doom  metal  direction  and  after  awhile  the  music  gets  more  up  beat  and  you  can  hear  elements  of  black  metal  being  mixed  in  with  doom  metal  and  the  song  is  30  minutes  in  length  and  all  instrumental  and  during  the  last  few  minutes  of  the  track  the  music  returns  back  to  a  drone  direction.

  Varituuk  creates  a  song  that  sticks  mostly  to  a  slow  style  of  doom  metal  on  this  recording  while  also  mixing  in  black  metal  elements  and  drones  to  create  a  very  dark  and  epic  sounding  instrumental  track  and  the  production  sounds  very  dark  yet  heavy  at  the  same  time.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Varituuk  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  doom,  black  metal  and  drone,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  8  out  of  10.

HaatE/Chiral/Where Mountains Pierce The Nightsky/2014 Split Album Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  album  from  Italy's  HaatE  and  Chiral  called  "Where  Mountains  Pierce  The  Nightsky"  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  HaatE  a  1  man  project  that  plays  black/dark  ambient.

  Nature  sounds  start  off  his  side  of  the  split  before  adding  in  ambient  style  synths  that  also  uses  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys  which  also  takes  the  music  into  many  different  directions  and  after  awhile  you  can  hear  some  electric  guitars  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  some  grim  black  metal  screams.

  All  3  of  his  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  while  you  can  hear  some  black  metal  elements  in  the  music  the  main  focus  is  more  on  an  atmospheric  ambient  sound  that  also  gets  more  organic  sounding  as  the  album  progresses  and  the  music  starts  going  into  a  different  direction  on  the  last  track  and  also  brings  in  drones  while  the  main  focus  remains  on  an  ambient  sound.

  HaatE  continues  the  black  metal  influenced  dark  ambient  sound  that  was  presented  on  his  previous  full  length  as  well  as  adding  more  atmosphere  into  the  sound  and  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  powerful.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  HaatE  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black  and  dark  ambient,  you  should  check  out  his  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Crystal".

  Next  up  is  Chiral  a  1  man  band  that  has  been  featured  recently  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  very  raw  and  progressive  form  of  black  metal.

  Wind  sounds  and  synths  start  off  his  side  of  the  split  giving  his  music  and  atmospheric  and  dark  ambient  feeling  and  his  only  song  on  the  split  is  a  20  minute long  track  and  after  a  minute  guitars  are  added  into  the  music  and  the  song  starts  going  into  more  of  a  black  metal  direction  along  with  some  blast  beats  and  grim  screams.

  When  guitar  leads  are  utilized  they  are  in  a  very  distorted  and  melodic  direction  and  the  atmospheric  parts  mix  in  with  the  heavier  sound  and  when  acoustic  guitars  are  added  into  the  song  they  take  the  music  into  more  of  a  progressive  direction  while  the  song  still  is  rooted  in  black  metal  for  the  most  part.

  Chiral  brings  in  a  lot  of  diversity  on  this  track  taking  a  raw  style  of  black  metal  and  mixing  iit  in  with  progressive  and  ambient  music  to  create  a  very  original  sounding  song,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness  and  nature  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw  and  progressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  his  track.

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  ambient  and  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  split.  8  out  of  10.

Human Serpent/The Gradual Immersion In Nihilism/Death Kneel Productions/2014 CD Review

  Human  Serpent  are  a  band  from  Greece  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  very  raw,  old  school  and  misanthropic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "The  Gradual  Immersion  In  Nihilism"  which  was  released  by  Death  kneel  Productions.

  A  very  dark  and  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  melodies  before  going  into  more  of  a  fast  and  raw  black  metal  direction  which  also  shows  the  band  adding  in  a  good  amount  of  blast  beats  and  hateful  screams  as  well  as  bringing  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  Melodic  chants  can  be  heard  for  a  few  seconds  on  a  couple  of  the  tracks  and  the  bands  musical  style  is  more  close  to  the  90's  style  of  black  metal  with  all  the  tracks  being  in  a  very  pure  and  true  style  of  this  genre  and  all  of  the  songs  on  the  recording  ignore  any  of  the  modern  styling's  of  this  genre  and  goes  back  to  the  way  this  musical  style  is  supposed  to  be  played  and  you  can  feel  a  great  amount  of  anger,  depression  and  hate  being  evoked  throughout  all  of  the  tracks  that  are  present  on  this  recording  and  there  is  never  a  soft  or  weak  moment  to  be  heard  and  they  also  close  the  album  with  a  track  that  is  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Human  Serpent  creates  a  very  raw  and  misanthropic  style  of  black  metal  on  this  recording  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  into  their  approach  to  the  old  school  side  of  the  genre,  the  production  sounds  very  dark,  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  misanthropic,  dark,  anti  human  and  nihilism  themes.  

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Human  Serpent  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw  and  misanthropic  anti  -human  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "I  Am  A  Misanthrope"  "Grief"  and  "Chapel  of  Bones".  8  out  of  10.

Mondovolland/Kwaade Vaart/Heidens Hart Records/2014 CD Review

  Mondovolland  are  a  band  from  the  Netherlands  that  plays  a  very  different  style  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "Kwaade  Vaart"  which  was  released  by  Heidens  Hart Records.

  Acoustic  guitar  playing  starts  off  the  album  giving  the  music  a  medieval  folk  music  feeling  and  after  a  couple  of  minutes  there  is  a  few  seconds  of  psychedelic  sounds before  heading  more  into  a  black  metal  direction  and  after  the  intro  the  music  starts  to  get  more  fast  and  raw  along  with  some  blast  beats  and  high  pitched  grim  screams.

  When  solos  and  leads  are  added  into  the  music  they  take  the  album  into  more  of  a  melodic  direction  and  the  band  also  starts  using  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  adding  in  clean  singing  vocals  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Some  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  also  bring  in  a  small  amount  of  spoken  word  samples  at  times  and  on  some  of  the  alter  tracks  the  acoustic  guitars  from  the  intro  also  make  a  return  and  when  they  mix  in  with  the  melodic  vocals  the  album  starts  evoking  more  of  an  avant  garde  atmosphere  while  the  main  focus  remains  on  a  very  diverse  style  of  black  metal  and  every  song  brings  in  a  different  style  while  you  can  still  tell  that  it  is  the  same  band  on  all  of  the  tracks.

  Mondovolland  plays  a  very  diverse  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  raw  and  melodic  yet  avant  garde  at  times  as  well  as  bringing  in  a  touch  of  pagan  and  viking  metal  to  make  the  album  sound  a  lot  more  original,  the  production  has  a  very  powerful  and  heavy  sound  that  does  not  take  away  from  the  raw  nature  of  the  music  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Dutch  and  cover  local  folk  stories  and  history.

  In  my  opinion  Mondovalland  are  a  very  great  sounding  original  and  diverse  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Duivelshuis"  "Wanner  De  Hernel  Bloedt"  and  "Mechteld".  8  out  of  10.

Countess/Sermons Of The Infidel/Heidens Hart Records/2014 CD Re-issue Review

  Countess  are  a  band  from  the  Netherlands  which  also  have  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  that  plays  an  orthodox  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2013  ep  "Sermons  Of  the  Infidel"  which  was  re-issued  by  Heidens  Hart  Records  in  the  year  of  2014  and  contains  unreleased  and  live  tracks  that  where  not  on  the  original.

  A  very  heavy  and  keyboard  orientated  sound  starts  off  the  album  bringing  in  a  very  ritualistic  and  occult  feeling  to  the  music  and  after  a  minute  grim  black  metal  vocals  are  added  into  the  music  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  most  of  the  music  sticks  to  mostly  a  mid  paced  old  school  black  metal  direction.

  When  solos  and  leads  are  added  into  the  music  they  add  more  melody  into  the  bands  musical  style  and  you  can  hear  a  lot  of  old  school  metal  influences  in  the  bands  musical  sound  while  some  of  the  music  has  a  gothic/death  rock  feeling  at  times  and  the  keyboards  have  a  very  dominant  sound  throughout  the  recording.

  As  the  album  progresses  acoustic  guitars  can  be  heard  on a  couple  of  the  tracks  and  the  bonus  songs  which  where  also  recorded  during  the  time  of  the  ep  also  continue  the  musical  style  that  was  presented  on  that  release  while  one  of  the  songs  also  shows  the  band  adding  in  death  metal  influenced  vocals  while  the  main  focus  remains  on  a  black  metal  style  sound.

  Countess  sticks  to  a  very  mid  paced  and  keyboard  orientated  style  of  black  metal  throughout  this  recording  while  also  mixing  in  a  lot  of  traditional  metal  elements,  the  production  sounds  very  old  school  yet  professional  all  at  the  same  time  while  the  lyrics  cover  Satanism,  Paganism,  Anti  Christianity  and  Historical  Events  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Countess  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  check  out  this  re-issue.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "I  Am  The  Infidel"  "Son  Of  The  Dragon"  "City  Of  Satan"  and  "Chosen  by  the  Gods".  8  out  of  10.

Wederganger/Gelderse Drek/Heidens Hart Records/2014 EP Review

  Wederganger  are  a  band  from  the  Netherlands  that  plays  a  very  raw  form  of  pagan/black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  ep  "Gelderse  Drek"  which  was  released  by  Heidens  Hart  Records.

  A  very  dark,  raw  and  heavy  old  school  black  metal  sound  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  some  elements  of  thrash  being  utilized  in  the  guitar  riffing  as  well  as  a  decent  amount  of  melody  and  when  vocals  are  added  into  the  music  they  are  high  pitched  grim  screams  which  also  sets  up  the  pace  for  the  music  to  get  faster  along  with  some  blast  beats.

  On  the  2  songs  there  is  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  some  melodic  pagan  chants  and  spoken  word  parts  being  brought  in  at  times  and  the  music  is  a  lot  more  closer  to  a  mid  90's  to  early  2000's  style  of  black  metal  and  the  fast  parts  display  more  of  a  raw  style  of  black  metal  and  on  the  second  track  the  music  starts  going  for  more  of  an  atmospheric  direction  along  with  some  clean  singing  pagan  vocals.

  Wederganger  display  a  great  amount  of  variety  on  these  2  tracks  starting  out  with  more  of  a  raw  and  thrash  influenced  black  metal  sound  before  evolving  more  into  a  pagan  direction  as  the  music  progresses,  the  production  sounds  very  dark,  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Dutch  and  cover  Undeath,  Gueldrian  folklore,  Germanic  Mythology  and  Horror  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Wderganger  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw  pagan/black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Gelderse Drek".  8  out  of  10.

Forefather/Deep Into Time/Heidens Hart Records/2014 CD Review

  Forefather  are  a  band  from  the  United Kingdom  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  musical  style  they  themselves  call  'Anglo  Saxon  Metal"  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  1999  album  "Deep  Into  Time"  which  was  re-issued  in  2014  by  Heidens  Hart  Records.

  Nature  sounds  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  keyboards  in  the  background  which  also  adds  more  of  a  medieval  feeling  to  the  recording  and  you  can  also  hear  some sampled  spoken  word  parts  after  a  few  seconds  and  after  the  intro  the  music  goes  more  into  a  fast,  raw  and  melodic  black  metal  direction  along  with  some  blast  beats  and  grim  screams.

  Melodic  clean  singing  can  be  heard  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  and  they  also  add  in  more  elements  of  pagan  and  viking  metal  when  they  are  utilized  and  after  awhile  the  band  starts  using  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  as  the  album  progresses  the music  starts  getting  a  lot  more  atmospheric.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  the  songs  that  are  on  this  recording  are  the  most  black  metal  influenced  material  that  the  band  has  ever  released  to  date  and  some  of  the  later  tracks  start  having  more  of  a  ritualistic  feeling  when  melodic  chants  are  added  the  music  and  the  band  also  brings  in  small  amounts  of  melodic  guitar  leads  at  times  and  the  keyboards  from  the  intro  are  also  utilized  again  on  some  of  the  later  tracks  and  one  of  the  2  bonus  songs  displays  more  in  a  traditional  folk  music  direction  before  closing  the  album  with  more  of  a  black  metal  style

  Forefather  had  more  of  a  raw  approach  to  pagan  metal  on  this  recording  bringing  in  more  of  a  black  metal  influenced  sound  than  what  was  to  come  on  later  recordings,  the  production  sound s very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Anglo  Saxon  Paganism  and  Mythology.

  In  my  opinion  this  was  a  great  sounding  album  from  Forefather  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Natural  Chaos"  "Visions  Of  Elders'  and  "Ancient  Voice".  8  out  of  10.

Onferno/Cathartic Offering/2014 Full Length Review

  Onferno  are  a  band  from  Italy  that  plays  a  very  unholy  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2014  album  "Cathartic  Offering".

  Rain  sounds  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  drum  beats  and  distortion  and  a  few  seconds  later  grim  screams  are  added  onto  the  recording  and  after  the  intro  the  music  starts  going  for  more  of  a  black  metal  direction  as  well  as  bringing  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  which  also  shows  the  vocals  getting  more  high  pitched  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Blast  beats  can  be  heard  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  and  the  music  has  a  mid  90's  Norwegian  style  black  metal  feeling  at  times  while  also  having  a  more  raw  edge  than  the  bands  of  that  era  and  at  times  the  vocals  also  have  a  very  depressive  and  suicidal  feeling  to  them  and  as  the  album  progresses  you  can  hear  more  of  a  raw  and  atmospheric  approach  to  black  metal  being  utilized.

  All  of  the  tracks  stick  to  a  very  true  and  pure  form  of  black  metal  and  the  band  avoids  adding  in  any  modern  trends  from  the  past  10  years  and  focuses  more  on  a  sound  that  contains  a  great  amount  of  variety  while  also  remaining  very  raw,  dark  and  heavy  and  always  retains  a  very  black  metal  orientated  atmosphere  which  also  has  a  very  melodic  edge  at  times  and  one  of  the  later  tracks  also  shows  the  band  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  guitar  leads  and  spoken  word  ritualistic  parts.

  Onferno  creates  a  very  raw  and  dark  style  of  black  metal  with  their  musical  sound  as  well  as  showing  the  ability  to  bring  in  atmosphere  and  still  keeping  it  very  grim  and  there  is  never  a  soft  or  weak  moment  to  be  heard  anywhere  on  this  recording,  the  production  sounds very  dark,  raw  and  old  school  in  the  true  black  metal  tradition  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  blasphemous  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Onferno  are  a  very  great  sounding  unholy  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "At  Dusk  Came  The  Madness"  "Mat  Death  Bloom  In  My  Enemy"  and  "Cursed  Chant  of  the  Maniac  Mind"  which  is  also  an  instrumental.  8  out  of  10.

Vargsang/In The Mist Of Night/Obscure Abhorrence Productions/2014 CD Review

  Vargsang  are  a  1  man  band  from  Germany  that  plays  a  very  raw,  misanthropic  and  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2014  album  "In  The  Mist  Of  Night"  which  was  released  by  Obscure  Abhorrence  Productions.

  Bell  sounds  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  epic  sounding  synths  and  a  few  seconds  later  guitars  and  bass  start  to  kick  in  along  with  some  grim  sounding  high  pitched  screams  and  blast  beats  which  also  takes  the  music  into  more  of  a  fast  and  raw  90's  orientated  black  metal  sound  and  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  amount  of  morbid  sounding  melodies  being  added  into  the  music.

  When  solos  and  leads  are  added  into  the  music  they  add  more  melody  into  the  music  while  also  remaining  true  to  a  raw  musical  style  and  after  awhile  the  music  starts  to  bring  in  a  small  amount  of  atmospheric  elements  and  there  is  also  a  good  mixture  of  slow,   mid  paced  and  fast  parts  present  throughout  the  recording.

  As  the  album  progresses  spoken word  parts  can  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  they  also  give  the  music  more  of  a  ritualistic  feeling  and  the  album  focuses  more  on  an  old  school  style  of  black  metal  keeping  everything  in  a  very  pure,  hateful  and  misanthropic  direction  while  also  being  atmospheric  and   melodic  at  times  and  a  couple  of  the  later  tracks  also  show  a  small  amount  of  clean guitars  being  used  for  a  few  seconds.

  Vargsang  plays  a  very  raw  and  old  school  style  of  black  metal  that  contains  the  best  elements  of  the  90's  style  taking  the  rawer  side  and  also  mixing  it  in  with  a  good  amount  of  melody  and  atmosphere  to  create  a  very  dark  and  true  style  of  black  metal,  the  production  sounds  very  dark,  raw  and  old  school  sounding  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark,  anti  religion,  hatred  and  misanthropic  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Vargsang  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw  and  misanthropic  black  metal  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Praise the  Dead"  "The  Cosmic  Gate"  "Captured  In  the  Dark"  and  "begotten".  8  out  of  10.

Einherjer/Av Oss, For Oss/Indie Recordings/2014 CD Review

  Einherjer  are  a  band  from  Norway  that  has  been  around  for  a  very  long  time  and  has  also  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  are  one  of  the  most  well  known  pagan/viking  metal  bands  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "Av  Oss,  For  Oss"  which  was  released  by  Indie  Recordings.

  Ocean  sounds  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  synths  and  acoustic guitars  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  brings  a  medieval  and  epic  feeling  to  the  recording  and  after  the  intro the  music  starts  going  into  a  heavier  musical  direction  along  with  some  grim  black  metal  vocals  and  you  can  also  hear  a  lot  of  melodic  guitar  leads  being  added  into  the  music  and  they  add  a  more  pagan  metal  feeling  to  the  bands  musical  sound.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  album  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  after  awhile  the guitar  riffing  starts  adding  in  more  modern  Norwegian  black  metal  elements  and  most  of  the  music  sticks  to  a  slow  to  mid  paced  musical  direction  and  after  awhile  the  acoustic  guitars  make  their  return  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  enhance  the  folk  music  influences  of  the  bands  approach  to  viking  metal.

  When  melodic  chants  and  clean  singing  are  added  into  the  music  they  start  taking  the  music  more  into  a  pagan/black  metal  musical  direction  and  the  band  also  brings  in  a  couple  of  long  and  epic  in  length  tracks  and  they  avoid  using  any  fast  parts,  raw  riffs  and  most  blast  to  focus  more  on  a  melodic  pagan/black  metal  musical  direction.

  Einherjer  remains  true  to  their  viking/pagan  metal  sound  of  previous  recordings  while  also  bringing  back  some  of  the  more  black  metal  roots  to  create  an  album  that  is  very  melodic,  heavy  and  epic  sounding,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Norwegian  and  cover  Norse  Paganism  and  mythology  themes.

  In my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Einherjer  and if  you  are  a fan  of  this  band,  you  should  enjoy  this  album.   RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Hammer  I  Kors"  "Nord  eg  ner"  and  "Trelldom".  8  out  of  10.
