Thaw/Earth Ground/Witching Hour Productions/2014 CD Review

  Thaw  are  a  band  from  Poland  that  plays  a  mixture  of  raw  black  metal,  sludge,  doom  metal,  noise  and  improv  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "Earth  Ground"  which  was  released  by  Witching  Hour  Productions.

  A  very  dark  and  melodic  avant  garde  sound  starts  off  the  album  and  after  the  intro  the  music  starts  going  more  more  of  a  fast  raw  black  metal  direction  along  with  some  brutal  sounding  blast  beats  and  grim,  high  pitched  screams  and  they  also  bring  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  adding  in  some  melody  and  atmospheric  sounds.  

  After  awhile  elements  of  harsh  noise  start  mixing  in  with  the  more  black  metal  orientated  style  of  the  bands  musical  sound  and  the  band  also  brings  in  a  few  long  and  epic  in  length  tracks  which  also  shows  the  band  adding  in  some  angry  style  shouts  in  with  the  screams  as  well  as  adding  sludge  and  doom  metal  elements  into  the  slower  side of  the  guitar  riffing  and  all  of  the  musical instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  As  the  album  progresses  clean  playing  can  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  when  solos  and  leads  are  added  into  the  music  they  bring  in  a  more  melodic  edge  to  the  album  and  they  also  start  adding  in  more  drones  as  time  goes  on  by and  the  music  starts  going  more  more  of  an  experimental  musical  direction  while  also  remaining  very  heavy  at  the  same  time  and  towards  the  end  they  band  also  starts  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  electronic  music  elements  while  the  last  track  also  shows  a  brief  use  of  melodic  chanting  being  utilized.

  Thaw  takes  a  sound  that  is  mostly  black  metal  and  mixes  it  in  with  some  elements  of  doom  metal,  sludge,  noise  and  experimental  as  well  as  a  decent  amount  of  melody  to  create  some  very  dark,  heavy  and  original  sounding  music,  the  production  has  a  very  dark,  raw  and  heavy  sound  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  depressive  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Thaw  are  a  very  great  sounding  experimental  mixture  of  black  metal,  sludge,  doom  metal,  noise  and  improv  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Afterkingdom"  "No  Light"  and  "last  Day".  8  out  of  10.
