VIII are a duo from Italy that plays an occult form of black metal with elements of doom metal and this is a review of their 2014 album "Drakon" which was released by Black Plague Records.
A very dark and avant garde sounds starts off the album along with some elements of ambient which also brings in a very occult and ritualistic feeling to the music and after a minute the music starts going for more of a mid paced old school black metal sound along with some high pitched screams and most of the tracks on the recording are very long and epic in length and on some of the tracks they also bring in a small amount of synths.
You can hear a great amount of melody in the bands musical style along with all of the musical instruments having a very powerful sound to them and after awhile blast beats are added into certain sections of the recording and when solos and leads are utilized they add more of a melodic and up beat feeling to the bands approach to black metal.
When the doom metal influence is added into the music the music starts evoking more of a dark atmosphere and the vocals also start having more of a grim feeling on the later tracks as well as bringing in melodic chants at times along with a small amount of whispers and while the music sticks to mostly a slow or mid paced direction the album also does have its fast moments at times.
VIII creates a style of occult black metal that is very melodic and sticks to mostly a slow to mid paced direction as well as adding in doom metal elements and ritualistic sounds to create an album that is very occult yet taking the genre to a different level, the production sounds very dark and heavy while the lyrics cover Occultism, Philosophy, Misanthropy and Individualism.
In my opinion VIII are a very great sounding occult black metal band with elements of doom metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Ode To Qayin" "Drakon" and "Descending the Abyss". 8 out of 10.
