Cowards/Still/Throatruiner Records/Deadlight/Terrian Vague/2016 EP Review

  France's  Cowards  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  that  continues  the  black  metal,  sludge,  and  hardcore  mixture  of  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2016  ep  "Still"  which  will  be  released  in  December  as  a  joint  effort  between  Throatruiner  Records,  Deadlight,  and  Terrian  vague.

  Angry  hardcore  style  screams  and  heavy  guitars  start  off  the  ep  before  adding  in  fast playing,  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  musical  more  of  a  raw  black  metal  feeling  and  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on t he  recording  and  the  songs  also  bring  in a   great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  Most  of  the  slower  riffing  is  heavily  influenced  by  sludge  and doom  metal  while  the  mid  tempo  sections  of  the  songs  bring  in  elements  of  post  hardcore  and  the  music  also  gets  melodic  at  times  and  when  guitar  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  distorted  fashion  and  as  the  ep  progresses  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  can  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  clean  guitars  are  also  utilized  briefly  and  spoken  word  parts  are  used  on  the  last  track.


  Cowards  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  the  black  metal,  sludge  and  hardcore  style  of  previous  releases,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  anger,  misanthropy  and  sarcasm  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Cowards  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black  metal,  sludge,  and  hardcore,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Still" and  "You  Belong  To  Me".  8  out  of  10.

Cowards/Rise To Infamy/Throatruiner Records/2015 CD Review

  Cowards  are  a  band  from  France  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  mixture  of  black  metal,  sludge  and  hardcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  album  "Rise  To  Infamy"  which  will  be  released  in  2015  by  Throatruiner.

   A  very  heavy  and  distorted  sound  starts  off  the  album    along  with  some  high  pitched  screams  a  few  seconds  later  and  the  music  also  brings  in  a  good  mixture  of  post  hardcore  and  sludge  elements  along  with  a  decent  amount  of  melody  and  the  slower  riffing  also  brings  in  a  great  amount  of  doom  metal  influences  to  the  bands  musical  style.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  on  some  of  the  tracks  the  vocals  bring  in  a  heavy  depressive  black  metal  influence  while  the  faster  parts  and  blast  beats  when  they  are  utilized  also  bring  in  the  raw  side  of  that  same  genre  and  as  the  album  progresses  the  music  starts  bringing  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  a  small  amount  of  spoken  word  samples  being  utilized  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording.

  Cowards  continue  the  sound  they  have  established  on  previous  recordings  taking  raw  and  depressive  black  metal  and  mixing  it  with  sludge  and  post  hardcore  to  create  the  sound  that  is  presented  on  the  recording,  the  production  sounds  very  dark,  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  anger,  misanthropy  and  sarcasm  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Cowards  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  enjoy  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Never  To  Shine"
"Birth  Of  The  Sadistic  Sun"  "Anything  But  the  High  Road"  and  'So  Easy".  8  out  of  10.

  Cowards  are  a  band  from  France  that  has  been  featured  before  in this  zine  with  a  musical  style  that  combines  black  metal, sludge  and  hardcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2013  ep  "Hoarder"  which  was  released  as  a  joint  effort  between  Ruins  Records and  Throatruiner  Records.

  "Old  City"  begins  with  some  drum  beats  which  lead  to  some  heavy  sludge  style  guitar  riffs  and  screams  and  you  can  also  hear  the  bass  guitars  in  the  background  and  after  awhile  amplified  distorted  effects  make  their  way  into  the  song  which  leads  to  the  bass  taking  over for  awhile  before  the  guitars  return  and  closes  with  heavy  distortion.

  "Smell  Of  An  Addict"  begins  with  some  heavy  distortion  and  bass  guitar  riffs  which  also lead  to  some  drums,  heavy  rhythm  guitar  riffs  and  screams  and  then  the  music  speeds  up  and  starts  adding  in  some  blast  beats  which  then  leads  to  the  song  switching  back  and  forth  between  slow  and  fast  parts  along  with  some  melodic  riffing  and  the  vocals  and  guitar  riffs  adding  in  more  black  metal  elements.

  "Fork  Out"  begins  with  some  heavy  hardcore  guitar  riffs,  drums  and  high  pitched  sludge  screams  and  then  the  music  starts  speeding  up  in  some  section  and  brings  in  some  primitive  black  metal  elements  and  blast  beats  before  slowing  down  again  and  adding  in  some  distorted  bass  guitars  and  the  song  closes  with  some  distorted  noises.

  "Where  Lies  The  Anchor"  begins  with  some  slow  doom  metal  guitar  riffs,  drums  and  screams  before  adding  in  some  powerful  bass  guitars  and  hardcore  elements  while  mostly  focusing  on  sludge  and  doom  elements  and  as  the  song  moves  on  the  vocals  start  utilizing  a  small  amount  of  depressive  black  metal  elements  before  adding  in  some  bass  guitar  leads.

  "Blessed  Persistence"  which  is  also  a  16  Horsepower  cover  begins  with  some  heavy  bass  guitars  and  drums  which  then  lead  to some  depressive  black  metal  screams  as  well  as  some  distorted  amp  effects  which  then  lead  to  some  heavy  guitar  riffs  and  towards  the  end  there  are  some  black  metal  screams  being  utilized.

  Song  lyrics  cover  darkness  and  addiction  themes,  while  the  production  has  a  very  dark,  heavy,  raw  and  primitive  sound  while  you  can  still  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording  along  with  a  couple  of  songs  being  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Cowards  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black  metal,  sludge,  and  hardcore,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Smell  Of  An  Addict"  and  "Where Lies  the  Anchor".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.

Cowards/Shooting Blanks And Pills/Throatruiner Records/Hellbound Records/2012 CD Review

  Cowards  are  a  band  from  France  which  consists  of  many  members  from  both  the  French  black  metal  and  crust  scenes  that  mixes  raw  and  primitive  sounding black  metal  with  hardcore  and  sludge/doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2012  album  "shoot  Blanks  And  Pills"  which  was  released  as  a  joint  effort  between  Throatruiner  Records  and  Hellbound  Records.

  Drums  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  drumming  with  blast  beats  being  thrown  into  the  music  at  times,  while  the  bass  playing  has  a  very  strong,  powerful  and  heavy  sound  with  riffs  that  dominate  throughout  the  recording.

  Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  riffs  that  combine  elements  of  raw  black  metal,  sludge,  doom  and  hardcore  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own  along  with  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing  along  with  a  mixture  of  short  and  long  songs  in  addition  there  are  some  dark  sounding  melodies  being  thrown  into  the  riffing  and  there  are  no  guitar  solos  or  leads  present  on  this  recording.

  Vocals  range  from  high  pitched  black  metal  screams,  sludge  screaming  and  hardcore  style  growls  and  shouts  along  with  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts,  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  hateful  themes, a s  for t he  production  it  has  a  very  dark,  heavy,  raw  and  primitive  sound  while  you  can  still  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording.

  In  my  opinion  Cowards  are  a  very  great  sounding  hybrid  of  black  metal,  sludge,  doom  metal  and  hardcore  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  style  of  music,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Hoarse  From  The  Get  Go"  and  "Arrogant,  Unseen".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.
