Conifère/Sol Miracula/Corde Raide Productions 2020 Split Album Review

 

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  album  between  Quebec,  Canada's   Conifère  and  Sol  Miracula  which  was  released  in  202o  by  Corde  Raide  Productions  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with   Conifère  who move  away  from  the  black  metal  style  of  their  previous  rleease  and  focus  more  on  the  dungeon  synth  and  ambient  side  of  their  music.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  synths  which  also  brings  in  elements  of  dungeon synth  and  ambient  while  also  adding  in  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys.  Their  only  track  is  over  20  minutes  in  length  as  well  as  always  sticking  to  an  instrumental  direction  and  the  production  sounds  very  dark.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  track  from   Conifère  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  dungeon  synth,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.

  Next  up  is  Sol  Miracula  a  music  project  that  plays  a  mixture  of  experimental,  ambient,  drone  and  doom  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  ambient  synth  and  atmospheric  sounding  drones  along  with  some  guitar  sounds  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  takes  the  music  into  more  of  an  experimental  direction..  Elements  of  doom  metal  can  also b e  heard  at  times  while  all  of  the  music  sticks  to  an  instrumental  direction  and  the  production  sounds  very  dark.

  In  my  opinion  So  Miracula  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  experimental,  ambient,  drone  and doom  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of t hose  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  musical  project.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Amethyst".

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  black,  doom  metal,  dungeon  synth,  experimental  and  drone.  8 out  of 1 0.

Botanist/Thief/Cicatrix/Diamond Brush/Prophecy Productions/2021 Split Album Review

 

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  album  between  California's  Botanist  and  Thief  called  "Cicatrix/Diamond  Brush"  which  will  be  released  on  August  27th  by  Prophecy  Productions  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  "Botanist  a  solo  project  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  an  experimental  form  of  post  black  metal.

  His  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  bass  guitars  which  also  take  over  as  a  lead  instrument  along  with  some  drum  beats  in  the  background.  Vocals  are mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  and  whispers  while  the  music  also  adds  in  a  great  amount  of  post  metal  elements  as  well  as  the  music  also  having  its  experimental  and  avant  garde   moments.

  Melodies  can  also be  heard  at  times  along  with  some blast  beats  also  being  into  some  parts  of  the  recording  and  both  of  the  re-mixed  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  lo-fi  while  the  lyrics  are  a  concept  album  and  cover  a  botanist  who  surrounds  himself  with  plants  and  flowers  in  a  place  he  calls  The  Verdant  Realm.    

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Botanist  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  experimental  post  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  his  side  of t he  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Styrax"  and  "Streptocarpus  (Reminx)".

  Next  up  is  Thief  a  solo  project  that  plays  an  experimental  form  of  electronic  music.

  His  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  clean  vocals  and  harsh  electronic  sounds  while  all  of  the  drum  beats  are  also  programmed.  Touches  of  90's  era  alternative  rock  can  also  be  heard  at  times  along  with  some  spoken  word  parts  also  being  added  on  some  of  the  tracks  and  when  electric  guitars  are  utilized  they  also  show  an  influence  of  metal,  on  one  of  the  songs  the  vocals  also  get  more  aggressive  sounding.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  cover  a  spiritual  pursuit  of  awakening  through  the  experience  of  transgression and  suffering  and  shows  some  inspiration  from t he  writings  of  Joyce,  Salinger  and  Nabokov.

  In  my  opinion  Thief  are  a  very  great  sounding  electronic  and  experimental  solo  artist  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  his  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Firethroat"  and  "Acid  Queen".

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  post  black  metal  and  experimental  music.  8  out  of  10.

Hvile I Kaos/Emerson Sinclair/Never Without The Pentagram/Metal Assault Records/2020 Split Album Review

    This  is  a  review  of  a  split  album  between  California's  Hvile  I  Kaos  and  Ohio's  Emerson  Sinclair  called  "Never  Without  The  Pentagram"  which  will  be  released  in  July  by  metal  Assault  Records  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Hvile I  Kaos  who  returns  with  his  mixture  of  occult  cellestic  black  metal,  ritual  and  chamber  music.

  His  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  cellos  which  also  brings  avant  garde,  classical  and  chamber  music  elements  onto  the  recording,  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  ritualistic  sounding  while  both  of his  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  some  persuasion  style  instruments  also  being  utilized  at  times.

  Both  of  the  tracks  are  also  instrumental  along  with  the  music  also  capturing  the  darkness  of  occult  black  metal.  The  cello's  also  get  very  diverse  sounding  at  times  as  well  as  some  acoustic  guitars  also  being  utilized  briefly,  the  closing  track  also  adds  in  a  touch  of  psychedelia.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  song  themes  revolve  around  the  occult  and  left  hand  path.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Hvile  I  Kaos  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  occult  cellestic  black  metal,  ritual  and  chamber  music,  you  should  check  out  his  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Rise,  Engulf,  Envenom".

  Next  up  is  Emerson  Sinclair  a  solo  artist  that  plays  a  musical  style  that  mixes  classic  rock,  extreme  metal,  grunge,  electronic,  baroque  and  traditional  liturgical  music.

  Her  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  stringed  instruments  while  the  clean  vocals  also  gives  the  music  more  of  an  operatic  atmosphere.  Synths  and  electronic  music  elements  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  recording  along  with  the  spoken  word  parts  giving  the  music  more  of  a  ritualistic  feeling.

  Touches  of  black  metal  can  also  be  heard  in  the  spoken  word  parts  along  with  some  atmospheric  sounding  drones  also  being  utilized  at  times.  Programmed  beats  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  recording  as  well  as  all  of  the  tracks  also  sounding  very  different  from  each  other.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  cover  psychoanalytic  character  studies,  metal  illness,  drams,  occultism,  the  glory  of  the  old  gods  and  the  relationship  between  humans  and  the  natural  world.

  In  my  opinion  Emerson  Sinclair  is  a  very  great  sounding  experimental,  ritualistic,  neo-classical  and  avant  garde  solo  artist  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  her  side  of  the  split.   RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Graphite"  and  "Singularity".

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  ritualistic  occult  black  metal,  avant  garde,  neo-classical,  and  avant  garde  music.  8  out  of  10.

Chrome Waves/Gridfailure/2020 Split Album Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  self  released  split  album  between  Illinois's  Chrome  Waves  and  New  York's  Gridfailure  which  will  be  released  on  March  27th  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Chrome  Waves  a  duo  that  plays  a  mixture  of  blackened  rock  and  shoegaze.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  ambient  style  soundscapes   while  most  of  their  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  Clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  their  songs  along  with  a  brief  use  of  saxophones  as  well  as  the  music  also  bringing  in  elements  of  shoegaze.

  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.  All  of  the  drum  beats  are  also  programmed  while  one  track  also  introduces  acoustic  guitars  and  synths  onto  their  side  of  the  recording  as  well  as  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  clean  vocals  and  they  close  their  side  of  the  split  with  a  cover  of  Joy  Division's "Th  Eternal".  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  cover  nature  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  Chrome  Waves  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  blackened  rock  and  shoegaze  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  duo.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "A  Fair  Wind".

  Next  up  is  Gridfailure  a  solo  project  that  plays  a  mixture  of  experimental,  dark  ambient,  power  electronics,  harsh  noise,  field  recordings  and  dark  hardcore.

  His  side  of  the  split  starts out  with  a  horror  movie  orientated  atmosphere  and  field  recordings  along  with  a  powerful  sounding  bass  guitars  a  few  seconds  later.  Vocals  are  mostly  angry  yet  demonic  screams  while  the  music  also  gets  very  experimental  at  times  as  well  as  adding  in  some  drum  beats.

  Harsh  noises  and  power  electronics  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  his  side  of  the  recording  as  well  as  a couple  of  tracks  also  bringing  in  clean  playing  and  acoustic  guitars.  All  of  the  songs  also  sound  very different  from  each  other  along  with  a  brief  use  of  melodic  guitar  leads  and  he  closes  his  side  of  the  split  with  a  cover  of  Today  Is  The  Day's  "Temple  Of  Morning  Star".  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  lo-fi  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  apocalyptic themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Gridfailure  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  experimental,  dark  ambient,  power  electronics,  harsh  noise,  field  recordings  and  dark  hardcore,  you  should  check  out  his  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Napalm  At  Zero  Gravity"  and  "Cascading  Failures".

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  post  black  metal,  shoegaze,  experimental  and  noise.  8  out  of  10.

We All Die (Laughing)/Mathieu Drouet/Tentoonsteeling/Kaotoxin Records/2014 Split Album Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  album  between  Bulgaria's  We  All  Die  (Laughing)  and  France's  Mathieu  Drouet  called  "Tentoonsteeling"  which  was  released  by  Kaotoxin  Records  in  2014  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  We  All  Die  (Laughing)  a  band  that  has  been  featured  before in  this  zine  and  played  a  very  progressive  and  depressive  form  of  black/doom  metal  on  their  album  but  go  for  more  of  a  soundtrack  feeling  on  this  recording.

 Dark  sounding  synths  start  off  their  side  of  the  split  giving  the  music  an  avant  garde  feeling  and  a  few  seconds  later  melodic  guitar  leads  start  to  kick  in  along  with  some  bass  guitars  and  psychedelic  elements  and  on  this  track  they  take  out  all  of  the  vocals  and  heavier  parts  that  where  part  of  their  full length  and  create  an  instrumental  piece  that  is  based  on  their  debut  album's  single  track  "Thoughtscan's  main  theme  and  the  song  is  close  to  14  minutes  in  length.

  Next  up  is  Mathieu Drouet  an  experimental  artist.

  Power  electronic  noises  start  off  his  side  of  the  split  giving  the  music  and  avant  garde  and  experimental  feeling  and  the  song  is  10  minutes  in  length  and  is  intended  to  be  a  rendition  of  his  photography  and  you  can  also  hear  a  bit  of   ambient  in  his  music  with  his  side  being  an  all  instrumental  piece

  In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  id  you  are  a  fan  of  We  All  Die  (Laughing)  and  experimental  music,  you  should  add  this  album  to  your  collection.  8  out  of  10.

Earthenwomb/Mors Universa/Vol. II/Glossolalia Records/2012 Split EP Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  ep  between  Springfield,  Oregon's  Earthenwomb  and  Mors  Universa  which  was  released  in  2012  by  Glossolalia  Records  and  we  will  start  of  the  review  with  Earthenwomb  which  plays  an  instrumental  and  experimental  form  of  black  metal.

  Drums  and  bass  playing  are  all  absent  from  their  side  of  the  recording,  while  the rhythm  guitars  are  all  slow  and  repetitive,  primitive  black  metal  riffs,  as  for  the  lead  guitars  they  bring  in  drone  and  noise  elements  to  their  side  of  the  recording.

  Vocals  and  song  writing  are  all  absent  from  their  side  of  the  recording  with  the  music  being  all  instrumental,  while  the  song  themes  cover  dark  emotions,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  dark,  raw  and  primitive  sound  with  the  only  song  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  Earthenwomb  are  a  very  great  sounding  instrumental,  experimental  black  metal  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  their  song.  RECOMMENDED.

  Next  up  is  Mors  Universa  a  project  that  plays  a  very  dark  and  experimental  form  of  ambient/drone.

  Synths  and  sound  effects  combine  dark  ambient,  experimental  and  drone  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own  and  there  are  no  other  musical  instruments  present  on  their  side  of  the  recording.

  Vocals  and  song  writing  are  all  absent  from t heir  side  of  the  recording  with  the  musical  being  all  instrumental, while  the  song  theme  covers  darkness  and  atmosphere,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  dark  and  primitive  sound  with  the   song  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  Mors  Universa  are  a  very  great  sounding  hybrid  of  dark  ambient,  experimental  and  drone  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED.

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black  metal,  ambient  and  experimental,  you  should  add  this  split  to  your  collection.  RECOMMENDED  BUY.
