Ov Shadows/Heresiarch/Hypnotic Dirge Records/2024 Full Length Review

 

  Sweden's  Ov  Shadows  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  raw  and  atmospheric  style  of  black  metal  from  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2024  album  "Heresiarch"  which  was  released  by  Hypnotic  Dirge  Records.

  A  very  fast  and  raw  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  done  in  more  of  a  deep  growling  style  mixed  in  with  some  grim  yet  high  pitched  sounding  black  metal  screams  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  lot  of  melody  and  the  album  also  has  its  atmospheric  moments.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  the  music  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  modern  era.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  one  song  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing  and  some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length,  melodies  are  also  added  into  a  lot  of  the  guitar  riffing.

  On  this  recording  Ov  Shadows  goes  for  more  of  a  fast,  raw,  modern  and  atmospheric  style  of  black  metal.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  Occultism,  Darkness  and  Blasphemy  themes.    

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Ov  Shadows  and  if  you  are  a f an  of  raw  and  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Repulsed  By  Those  Who  Adhere  To  You"  "Lord  of  Thaumiel"  and  "invocation".  8  out  of  10.

Ov Shadows/I Djavulens Avbild/Hypnotic Dirge Records/2020 CD Review

  Sweden's  Ov  Shadows  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  the  atmospheric  style  of  their  previous  release  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  album  "I  Djavulens  Avbild"  which  will  be  released  in  August  by  Hypnotic  Dirge  Records.

  Blast  beats  and  heavy  riffing  start  off  the  album  while  the  tremolo  picking  in  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Vocals  are  mostly  high pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody.  A  good  portion  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  the  music  also  having  its  atmospheric  moments  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard.

  On  this  recording  Ov  Shadows  remains  true  to  the  modern,  aggressive  ant  atmospheric  style  of  black  metal  that  they  had  established  on  their  previous  release.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Swedish  and  cover  darkness,  death  and  metaphysical  themes  along  with  some  influences  from  the  writings  of  C.G  Jung.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Ov  Shadows  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Den  Eld  Som  Tar  och  Forvrider"  "Anakoretens  Gap"  and  "Av  Kunskap  Kront  Till  Gud".  8out  of  10.

  Ov  Shadows  are  a  band  from  Sweden  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  an  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018 album  "The  Darkness  Between  Stars"  which  will  be  released  on  February  23rd  by  Black  Market  Metal  Label.

  Atmospheric  soundscapes  start  of  the  album  before  going  into  a  very  fast  and  raw  musical  direction  which  also  uses  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  which  also  gives  the  songs  a  more  raw  feeling  along  with t he  vocals  being  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  modern,  melodic  and  atmospheric  fashion  while  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  riffs  also  bringing  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  as  well  as  some  of  the  tracks  being  long  and  epic  in  length  and  on  the  last  track  clean  playing  is  introduced  onto  the  recording.

  On  this  recording  Ov  Shadows  goes  for  more  of  a  modern  and  atmospheric  style  of  black  metal  while  also  being  very  raw,  aggressive  and  melodic  at  the  same  time,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness  and  nature  themes.

Ov Shadows/Monologues/2016 EP Review

  Ov  Shadows  are  a  band  from  Sweden  that  plays  an  dark  and  raw  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2016  ep  "Monologues".

  A  very  dark  yet  melodic  sound  starts  off  the  ep  before  adding  in  black  metal  screams  and  when  the  music  speeds  up a   great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  recording  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  the  music  also  brings  in  more  of  a  modern  approach  to  the  genre.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  hear  a great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  the  vocals  also  get  very  grim  at  times  and  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording  and  guitar  leads  are  only  used  briefly  but  done  in a   melodic  fashion  while  all  3  of  the  songs  remain  true  to  a  very  heavy musical  direction.

  Ov  Shadows  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  dark,  raw,  aggressive  and  melodic,  the  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  dark  aspects  of  your  shadow  side.

  In  my  opinion  Ov  Shadows  are  a  very  great  sounding  dark,  raw  and  heavy  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK "The  Ash  That  Covers  All".  8  out  of  10.
