Penitence Onirique/Nature Morte/Les Acteurs de L'Ombre Productions/2023 Full Length Review

 

  France's  Penitence  Onirique  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  an  occult  form  of  post  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2023  album  "Nature  Morte"  which  will  be  released  in  November  by  les  Acteurs  de  L'Ombre  Productions.

  Atmospheric  sounding  keyboards  start  off  the  album  and  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  tracks  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

  Growls  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  one  song  also  introducing angry  shouts  onto  the  album.  Some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  a  couple  of  songs  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing,  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  one  track  is  also  an  instrumental  and  clear  vocals  are  also  added  towards  the  end.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Alchemy,  Occultism,  Esoteric,  Self  Discovery  and  Philosophical  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Penitence  Onirique  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  occult  post  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Les  mammonites"  and  "Pharmakos".  8  out  of  10.

Penitence Onirique/Vestige/Les Acteurs de L' Onbre Productions/2019 CD Review

  Penitence  Onrique  are  a  band  from  France  that  has  been  featured  before  in this  zine  and  plays  an  occult  form  of  post  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2019  album  "Vestige"  which  was  released  by  Les  Acteurs  de  L'  Ombre  Productions.

  Atmospheric  sounding keyboards  and  clean  playing  starts  off  the  album  while  most  of  the  tracks  are  very long  and  epic  in  length.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling and  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.

  The  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  while  the  clean  vocals  bring  more  of  an  avatn  garde  style  onto  the  recording.  The  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  as  well  as  some  growls  also  being  utilized  at  times  and  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads are  utilized  they  are  also done  in  a  very  melodic  post  metal style  as  well   as  clean  playing  also  making  a  return  on  some  of  the  later  tracks.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  French  and  cover  alchemy,  esoterica,  philosophy  and  self  discovery  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Penitence  Onrique  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of occult  post  black  metal, you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Le  corps  gele  de  Lyse"  "Hesperos"  and  "Vestige".  8  out  of  10.

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

P.O is a two-headed entity, composed of Bellovesos for everything related to music and Diviciacos for lyrics and voices We try to deliver a complex BlackMetal, radical and ambient.

2.You have an ep coming out in September, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?

You can definitely considered V.I.T.R.I.O.L as our first album. As I said above, we try to deliver a complex and ambient black metal, which leaves space to the interpretation of the listener. The goal is to provoke emotions in people and place them in an introspective mood. V.I.T.R.I.O.L consists of various initiatory journeys, which lead to an acceptance of death and the search for inner peace

3.Your lyrics cover a good amount of esoteric and occult topics, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in these subjects?

The interest for esotericism, alchemy, religion is very personal for me it is mainly a way for the man I am to find peace and understands what I feel and think to a philosophical point of view. In this album I place the search for peace before death as a goal to be achieved, as the alchemist seeks the philosopher's stone, the gold, the inner light, that we begin to find by getting rid of suffering, the sulfur .

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Penitence Onrique'?

Like everything else, we wanted to leave room to interpretation. For me, Pénitence Onirique, something like "dream-like penance" is like a psychic path that we follow to forgive ourselves for what we missed, for our regrets, for what's eating us and our soul throughout life.

5.According to the metal archives page the band is a solo project but the fb has band members listed was this originally a solo project?

This project began as a solo and instrumental project only involving Bellovesos. But as we made music together for many years and I could relate to his work, I quickly came up with a background and lyrics, here’s the result.

6.The ep is coming out on 'Emanations', are you happy with the support they have given you so far?

Yes definitely. we're over the moon and it’s very pleasant .

7.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?

Not too easy to measure it yet. but for now it’s rather positive and it makes us really happy .

8.Are you also involved with any other bands or musical projects?

NO

9.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

I can't answer that, but surely towards something more personal, without limits.

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

In terms of music, mainly the 90’s European black metal scene ( particularly the Swedish like Dissection, Dawn, Sacramentum…) but also Doom, New wave, Drone ….  but Literature, cinema, alchemy, esoterism, history, human nature, religions is also a big part of our influences .

11.What are some of your non musical interests?

Culture in general .

Penitence Onirique/V.I.T.R.I.O.L/Emanations/2016 CD Review

  Pentitence  Onrique  are  a  band  from  France  that  plays  an  esoteric  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2016  album  V.I.T.R.I.O.L"  which will  be  released in  September  by  Emanations.

  A  very  dark,  melodic  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  and  the  guitar  solos  and  leads  also  use  a  great  amount  of  melody  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  yet  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

  Throughout  the  recording  there  is  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  the  music  also  gets  very  atmospheric  at  times  and  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that are  present  on  the  recording  and  a  great  portions  of  the  tracks a re  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  music  is  also  perfectly  balance  between  both  old  school  and  modern  black  metal  influences  while  some  tracks  also  bring  in  a  small  amount of  growls  and  as  the  album  progresses  some  of  the  tracks  start  utilizing  a  small  amount  of  clean  guitars  and  nature  sounds.

  Penitence  Onirique  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  melodic,  raw  and  atmospheric  sounding  and  also  perfectly  balance  between  both  the  old  school  and  modern  forms  of  the  genre,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  French  and  cover  Alchemy,  Occultism  and  Esoteric  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Penitence  Onirique  are  a  very  great  sounding  esoteric  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Le  Soufre"  and  "V.I.T.R.I.O.L".  8  out  of  10.
