Eleventh Ray/Reviving Tehom/Dark Descent Records/2025 Full Length Review

Eleventh  Ray  are  a  band  from  Greece  that  plays  a  very  old  school  and  occult  mixture  of  black,  death  and  thrash  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2025  album  "Reviving  Tehom"  which  will  be  released  in  May  by  Dark  Descent  Records.

A  very  dark  and  heavy  sound  rooted  in t he  early  90's  start  off  the  album  while  the  vocals  bring  in  more  of  a  classic  death/thrash  metal  style.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  a  lot  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  the  solos  and  leads  also  stick  to  more  of  an  old  school  direction.

Some  of  the  slower  riffing  also  shows  an  influence  of  doom  metal  while  spoken  words  can  also be   heard  on  a  few  songs.  Growls  are  also  utilized  at  times  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in a   great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  black  metal  feeling.

A  lot  of  the  music  is  also  heavily  rooted  in  the  classic  Hellenic  style  mixed  in  with  influences  from  other  parts  of  the  world.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  some  keyboards  also  being  used  briefly  and  there  are  also  a  couple  of  instrumentals.  The  production  sounds  very  old  school  while  the  lyrics  cover  Dark  Magick  and  Typhonian  Alchemy.

In  my  opinion  Eleventh  Ray  are  a  very  great  sounding  old  school  and  occult  mixture  of  black,  death  and  thrash  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Nightshade  Of  Damascus"  "ICUL"  and  "Reviving  Tehom".  8/5  out  of  10.

Patristic Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

I've been putting music together since late 2018, it all became Patristic in 2020. The world stopped around me, so I could take a good look at the music I've written, and trust myself enough to say "I have a new project". Jacopo from Bedsore helped with vocals and that's how the "Apologetica" EP came out. Then he called himself out being too busy with his work and Bedsore. I had to find new people, and almost by mistake met Sathrath. He learned all the EP songs in a blink of an eye and I couldn't believe how tight he was. For the first time I thought, Patristic could have a real lineup. Plus, some of his musical ideas turned into new songs. That's how "Catechesis" came out. Then I met L.S. when we shared the stage in Germany (me with HD, him with Liber Nvll), loved his vocal style and asked him to be part of the new album. It took forever, but here we are.

2.You have your first full length coming out in June, musically how does it differ from your previous ep?

Like night and day. There are real musicians behind it, a drummer especially, the approach is less frantic, less notes but hopefully the right ones. Everything is more cinematic, there's no urge to fill every second with a thousand notes or transients. We're starting to develop our own style.

3.A lot of your lyrics cover Paganism, Gnosticism and the work of the early Christian writers, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in these topics?

It's more an historical interest. And a philosophical one. I've always been fascinated by those rarefied centuries of Roman empire decadence. What happened during those 300 years of sleep, when, quoting Excalibur's Merlin, "the one god came to drive out the many"? How was the religious warfield prepared? It started with philosophy. Pagan thinkers were plagiarized then replaced. The apogee of civilization was stripped of its pagan culture, melted and poured on the cross.

4.I know that the band was named after the study of the early Christian writers, what are some of the early church philosophers that you have studied?

I started with St Agostino during my school years, long long time ago. Then others came, Ippolito, Filone, Atanasio... all parts of the same - I apologize for the childish term- "plot". The Christian plot, crafted in Greek language and wrapped in the purple of late imperial clothes. What a glorious mystification.

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

The Tauroctony is a very popular image of the Mithraic cult -the religion that ended being one of the many embryos of the cult of Christ. I knew Manuel Scapinello would, through his low relief art, turn this classic image and silhouette into something that would fit perfectly the mythological breath of the age we (tried to) give music to.

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

We have never played live.

7.Do you have any touring or show plans once the new album is released?

If there will be interest, we'd love to.

8.The new album is going to be released on 'Willowtip Records', how would you compare working with this label to 'Pulverised Records' which released the previous ep?

Roy and Pulverised were great to us, they gave us a chance we'll always be grateful for. We hope with WIllowtip to reach a broader audience, their core is death metal but this is not totally unrelated to our music.

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black and death metal?

Still too soon to say. My only hope is that people would get at least to half of one of our songs before starting spitting comments and reviews. This should be done with all music: listen before criticize, the musician deserves at least ten minutes of your precious time.

10.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?

Sathrath is busy touring with Infernal Angels and has a tighter and tighter schedule with Nocturnal Depression, L.S. is quite busy being a dad now, and I guess soon he'll have more duties with Frostmoon and Liber Nvll. Let's see if we'll be able to get onstage at least once before the end of the year.

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Only one possible answer: into our own identity. "Catechesis" is, still, the beginning of our journey. Some things worked out better than others, that's where I'll start when it's time to write new music. In fact, I'm already working on it.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

I'm literally consuming the latest albums by Barshasketh, Thy Darkened Shade, Dormant Ordeal, Blaze of Perdition and Chaos Invocation. These are my primary sources of inspiration these days and I'm thankful for their music.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Thank you for taking the time to ask these questions. To the reader, thank you for taking the time to read.

Osknavitelj Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording of the new album?

Hi!   How are you? I'm glad to have the opportunity to answer your questions.

After we finished recording the album Pradavni at Paradox Studio, we focused on promoting it independently and putting emphasis on live shows. The album was very well received by our domestic audience; the support at concerts has been strong and sincere. But to our pleasant surprise, we also gained new fans abroad, and their support means a lot to us.

I sing in my native language and incorporate elements of old Serbian lyricism and archaic language, which I initially thought might be a barrier for foreign listeners, but it turned out that this authenticity was actually something they found interesting and relatable in its own way.

There have also been some lineup changes. I believe a band needs to function as a unified whole—not just musically, but also in terms of vision and dedication. Some members left because of that, but the core of the band remains the same, with those who’ve been with me since the very beginning.

We've also worked on our image and stage presence, staying true to the spirit of old-school black metal, because for us, it's not just a style, it's something we carry within.

2. You have a new album coming out in May, musically how does it differ from your previous recording?

This album is our first, and so far, it's the only one we've released. The difference this time is that we previously released and promoted it independently. I'm excited about its upcoming re-release because it has finally found an excellent record label, Fentzer Death Records from Germany. Their professional work is something I consider a great advantage.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the newer music and also how would you describe your progress as songwriters over the years?

When I decided to form the band Oskrnavitelj, I also made the decision that the lyrics I write should be the best they can be, so that I am fully satisfied with them. I chose to write in my native Serbian language because I primarily write about my ancestors and events that took place in this region centuries ago. There’s also an added touch of mysticism, a bit of imagination, and spiritual events from my own past.

I don’t limit myself in imagination, but I also explore themes around Serbian warriors, the ancient race of Slavs — there’s so much that inspires me and that I can write about. Our warriors and ancestors are still here, somewhere, and maybe they guide me to write lyrics easily. 🙂

I believe that old-school black metal resonates with me the most, both musically and in terms of writing lyrics. My earlier works were more oriented toward grind and death metal, but this is truly what I feel and express from the heart.

4 .A lot of your earlier lyrics covered Paganism and Blasphemy themes, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in these topics?

In my previous bands where I sang grind and death metal, these themes were mentioned. However, I primarily write about Serbian events, Slavic history, and my ancestors. I focus on real events and battles that took place in this region, exploring the psychological nature and strength of certain warriors from centuries ago. Some of my lyrics also delve into the play between God and the Devil.

What I want to say is that music and lyrics are a way for me to convey messages to people. These are true spiritual elements and events. This doesn’t mean I’m promoting blasphemy, but rather that both good and evil exist, and through this duality, we can learn about real life. It allows us to reflect on who we are and which path we should take.

5 I know that the band name means 'desecrator' in Serbian, how does this name fit in with the musical style that you play?

Oskrnavitelj carries a name that symbolizes the breaking of laws and norms, the new world order, and the lies that are imposed. It is a name rooted in past centuries, representing destruction, freedom, and something that belongs to us. The name fits perfectly with the spirit of old-school black metal, which deals with themes of defiance and questioning existing values.

Oskrnavitelj is a name of transformation, liberation, and a reminder of forgotten truths. The name carries the message to not forget our roots, and through music and lyrics, we are reminded of the ancient truths that have shaped us.

I thought a lot about what name to give the band, but I received a message, and that’s it.

6 Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

My friend Danilo Trbojević from the band Nadimac has successfully brought my idea and the sketch of the image to life exactly as I envisioned it. Since I’m not very good at drawing, all that was left for me to do was contact him and explain my concept for the album cover. Fortunately, he understood it and turned it into a masterpiece exactly as I had imagined.

The artwork represents the Moon, which is the ruler of magic and power, alongside the cracked Earth — symbolizing the energy of the Earth. When their energies merge at a specific moment, as it is written, great changes occur. It’s a strong energy, a transformation, and the beginning of something powerful.

7..What are some of the best shows that the band has plated so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

We’ve had several shows that are especially meaningful to me, where we truly came into our own as a band. I would highlight the performances with two Romanian bands, Ordinul Negru and Nocturn. They represent the old school of black metal, and I really connected with their energy. Every song radiated that authentic old black metal spirit. They are two truly high-quality bands.

It’s also worth mentioning the show we played with the Greek black metal band Decipher and Shadowmass, a blend of black and heavy metal. It was a very interesting musical combination, and the sound came together really well live.

There have been many other positive experiences. For example, the performance with Nihilism, another black metal band from Greece, who left a strong impression and showed great support. I’d also mention the Riverion Festival in Petrovac na Mlavi, Slovenski Sumrak Festival, as well as our show organized by Hell Hammer Promotion. And of course, our gigs at Club Fest and in Garaža shouldn’t be left out.

When it comes to our stage presence, aside from the visual aesthetic inspired by old-school black metal, every performance is a moment of connection with our ancestors. Though we live in the modern world, the essence is not to forget our roots — where we come from, who we are, and how we relate to those who came before us. In a way, our performance is also an offering of gratitude to them.

We’re not very talkative on stage, but there’s a deep connection with the audience. We aim to become one, to experience the melody, the rawness of the music, and its primal energy together.

8.Do you have any touring or show plans once the new album is released?

Of course, we do have plans to continue playing shows after the album is released, both in our home country and abroad. Our goal is to appear at various festivals across Europe, especially those that embrace the underground spirit and support true black metal expression. We’re not aiming for exhausting, endless tours. What matters to us is that each performance carries meaning and the energy we want to share. If everything aligns and the conditions are right, we’re open to embarking on a broader tour. Above all, it’s important for us to stay true to ourselves and to the music we create.

9.Both of the albums where released through 'Fetzner Death Records', are you happy with the support that they have given you so far?

I’d like to make a small correction, we currently have one album, titled “Pradavni”, which symbolizes wisdom, maturity, and authority. It was originally released independently, and we handled the promotion on our own. Not long after, I discovered an excellent label from Germany – Fetzner Death Records.

We’re absolutely satisfied with their professionalism, promotion, and the support they’ve given us. Our digipak CD editions are arriving soon, and we’re getting ready to officially launch the album’s promotion.

What I particularly appreciate is that everything is done within the agreed timelines no delays, no wasted time.

Huge thanks to them for the great promotion and the surprises they’ve prepared for us. A warm recommendation to anyone looking for a high-quality and reliable label!

10.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?

The reaction has been great! We've received a lot of praise and support, along with many positive comments about the album and specific songs. I must mention that BM Promotion featured us extensively on their YouTube channel, which helped us gain visibility and consistent support and feedback from audiences around the world.

Singing in our native language might be a bit hard to understand for international listeners, but as someone who comes from this region, I made a conscious decision to keep it that way. Just like every ancient culture expressed itself in its native tongue, I believe the Serbian language holds a rich expressive potential – especially in lyrical form. Serbian is part of the Old Slavic language family, with deep roots and unique characteristics. When singing about ancestral themes and ancient times from this land, the Serbian language captures that spirit in the most authentic way.

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

There’s still some internal work and adjustments to be done within the band, but everything is definitely moving in a positive direction  and it has to. There’s no other way forward.

I see us performing at solid festivals abroad, as well as continuing to play shows here in our region, including collaborations with international bands. The more live shows, the better!

Of course, the most important thing is that we’re already working on new material for the next album. Our goal is clear  to stay true to the '90s black metal style. We’re strictly sticking to that path. There will be no change in direction only progress, taking everything to a higher level: musically, sonically, and in every other aspect.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles the band members are currently listening to nowadays?

Oh, there’s quite a mix — from good hard rock, through '90s death metal, to old-school black metal, of course. Personally, I love the old Whitesnake, Helloween, old Kreator, Sodom, Nile, Dying Fetus, Immolation, Monstrosity, Malevolent Creation, Darkthrone, Kampfar, Naglfar, Burzum, Mayhem, but Bathory is at the top of the list. There’s much more I could name.

The other band members also listen to Bathory and similar bands, maybe some alternative stuff... Oh, and we love Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, old Nightwish, The Cult... and much more.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

“Thank you once again for the interview, we wish you all the best. Special thanks to Fetzner Death Records for their trust and support. Also, we’d like to thank all of our fans for their love and support. Expect new songs, new shows, and much more darkness to come. Stay true to the darkness and remember, this is just the beginning.”

Druma Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

Maike: Druma was founded around 2018 in Hamburg. Our drummer Pablo and I had been rehearsal roommates for a couple of years already, with our bands Benthic and Teryky. I started practicing rough vocals in these times and was looking for musicians to test that out. Pablo had free capacities, and so he joined the club. Initially, the project wasn't supposed to become a band... However, we changed plans soon and decided to do exactly this – making a band out of it :)

Pablo:

We found Jose and Daniel on guitars, Marcus on bass. 2020 was the point we were ready to play live, although there hasn’t been much live playing at that time the pandemic stroke. Daniel left the band in the meantime, which means we are one guitar player short at the moment. But our friend Sebastian from Benthic is helping us out live.

2.Recently you have released a new album, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

Pablo: That’s a hard question for me to answer, as I lack an objective perspective. I think that „Sores Of Our Time“ sounds more focused, compact and a little heavier than „Dawning“. On the other hand we have a clean singing part on the new album, so I think it’s also more versatile.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the new album and also how would you describe your progress as songwriters over the years?

Maike: I write about topics that concern me, mostly social struggles and political issues. Sometimes there's as well a strong personal conjunction. „First World“ for instance is about the situation at the EU's external borders and the fact, that we treat refugees worse than animals. „Until The End“ is about gender roles and how they restrict individuals - and finally all of us as a society.

In terms of songwriting in general, we stick to what we've done since the beginning: Most of the songwriting happens in our rehearsal room, and everyone is involved.

We maybe became a bit more flexible over the years. Not just the guitar players, but as well our drummer Pablo or our bass player Marcus bring riffs from time to time. And if one of the guitar players drops out for a rehearsal, it may happen that our bass player switches to guitars, and I switch to bass guitar. At least a good occasion to change perspectives :)

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Druma'?

Pablo: Druma means tree in Sanskrit (among other translations). I stumbled upon the term in a documentation. Honestly, I can’t remember what exactly it was about, but the word sounded cool, looked nice and it’s easy to remember. So sadly no meaningful story here.

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

Jose: The Artwork somehow reflects the social and political criticism also found in the lyrics throughout the album.

The Cover depicts both physical and mental aspects of nature and humanity. The image of lungs is like an example of the Roschach Test in that it intertwines the two.

As you can see, the image is part of a damaged wall,  which symbolizes the deterioration of mental, physical, and environmental health mainly inflicted on by man.

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

Pablo: We had a lot of great shows over the last years, it’s hard for me to pick the best ones. Our first show in our home town got stuck in my head, because it was very nice and very weird at the same time. Due to covid restrictions, the audience was seated, which of course I’ve never experienced before and it was very hard to read the room. I had no idea if anyone like what we were doing. Fortunately, the audience did like it, and in the end, they showed us that overwhelmingly. But it sure was a weird experience.

Marcus: We really played some great shows, but the Paranoya Festival in Radebeul near Dresden has remained in my memory. Organized by a great crew, this festival takes place somewhere in the middle of nowhere. A lot of people come there and the atmosphere is overwhelming!

7.Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?

Pablo: We got some live dates coming up and hopefully we will add some more shows soon. We don’t do bigger tours, as it’s very hard for smaller bands to book longer runs. Plus we all got jobs and some of us have kids.

8.Currently the band is signed to 'Moment Of Collapse Records', how did you get in contact with this label?

Pablo: We knew Basti from Moment Of Collapse and he even played bass with us in an early incarnation of Druma. So it was obvious to ask him, if Moment of Collapse would release our album. Luckily they agreed and we are very happy with the partnership.

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black and sludge metal?

Pablo: Worldwide is a big word for a tiny band like ours, we have only played in Germany so far. There have been some airplays on foreign (internet) radios I am aware of, but we haven’t got much reactions from abroad. At our shows the reactions are mostly very nice. There’s almost always someone coming to us and telling us that he/she/they liked it and that’s of course always a nice thing to hear. And it makes the gear carrying afterwards a lot easier. :-)

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Pablo: There’s been some talking about the direction we will be heading in the future, but time will tell what the outcome will be. Most of the time, writing a new song starts with a riff that someone comes up with and from there, the song takes its own path. One part leads to the next, and there usually isn't a pre-made plan. But we want to try to open ourselves up to some new influences, so that writing new songs remains exciting for us.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Pablo: I think every music I’ve listened to extensively has had an influence on my drumming and songwriting. I’ve been listening to heavy music since my childhood, Heavy Metal, Death Metal, Black Metal, later it was more chaotic Hardcore like Converge and The Dillinger Escape Plan. Nowadays, I'm listening to a lot of Black Metal again, even though it can be really exhausting to shift through all the NSBM crap to make sure I don't accidentally support any right-wing morons.

Maike: For me, creating songs is primarily creating sound and atmosphere. Thus, influences come from music of high intensity, that pulls you as a listener literally inside! Two examples are Morrow's „The Quiet Earth“ or Celeste's „Assassine(s)“.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Marcus: Recently, we've unfortunately noticed that NSBM- and sketchy bands, as well as bands with discriminatory statements, seem to be gaining more visibility again - even in venues that didn't host this type of bands before! This somehow fits our current political situation. We ourselves occasionally receive booking requests where the lineup includes bands with connections to the right-wing scene, or which at least don't mind playing shows with such bands. That's obviously out of the question for us.

I wish bands would always be careful about who they share the stage with. Also that show organizers thoroughly research the political affiliations of the bands they are hosting, and where and with whom they have played. And that operators of social media channels always keep an eye on what the bands they offer a platform stay for, and what they represent. It would be nice if a zero-tolerance policy was implemented to nip all this shit in the bud.

Maike: Besides, I really, really hope to see more women or not cis-male persons on stage soon!! We urgently need more visibility, especially in metal lineups. In some of the reviews about our new album, we were called „the guys“, „gentlemen“ and something similar... obviously, there's still a long way to go.

As well, we are currently looking for a new band member on guitars or bass, preferably FLINTA – and it's anything but easy to find such a person.

Pablo: Thanks a lot for the interview! It’s very nice to see people supporting the DIY scene. Hope to catch you and some of your readers at one of our shows soon. Or at any other show. Go to shows at your local DIY venues, I guess that’s what it comes down to. :-)
