1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording of the new album?
Now that we are working with a label, there has been a lot of coordination regarding the record, design, artwork, release date, etc.
Besides that we are trying to get a live line up for the very near future.
2. In June you have a new album coming out, musically how does it differ from your previous ep?
Our goal was to create a more mature album without losing the virginal, almost naive approach of our beginnings. In addition, a full length gives us the opportunity to vary more with the musical influences.
We also wanted to record everything as analog as possible, while the EP has mainly digital sounds. For example while we had up to 6 overlapping guitars at some points on the EP we only used one single guitar track on the left and one on the right which influenced the songwriting a lot.
3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the newer release and also how would you describe your progress as songwriters over the years?
Overall, the album is intended to create an unknown but strangely intimate feeling. We don’t like to define the topics of each song because everyone should feel free to have their own interpretation on them. Some are kind of obvious though like Chat Noir which is our tribute to our love for cats.
In the end, it is important to us that the music and the lyrics together express a certain mood.
4.In one interview you also mention an interest in the writings of H.P Lovecraft, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in his work and also do you have any interest in other authors?
While we made a tribute song about Lovecraft on the EP we excluded his stories from this album. We still love Lovecraft and our writing style is heavily influenced by him but the Lovecraft story for us had been told to the end.
In general, the early period of science fiction and horror is interesting because it is not the scientific but rather the imaginative approach that is chosen to describe the unexplainable.
Also the late Trevor Strnad will always be on our minds while writing lyrics. Sometimes we struggled with lines and we asked ourselves how he would’ve written it and it usually worked out.
5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Widertod'?
Widertod comes from a local fairytale and is some sort of life healing herb also called the “conqueror of death”. To be able to save someone from dying and the word itself just sounding awesome on its own was enough for us to say that’s our name.
6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?
The artwork represents a feeling we had after finishing the album. It’s not a clear statement but rather describes a mood, maybe. It took forever to find the right idea and we ended up with this and are quiet proud since it’s a selfmade artwork.
7.Currentyl there are only 2 members in the band, are you open to expanding the line up or do you prefer to remain a duo?
Definitely, we are currently working on getting a live line up.
8.The new album is coming out on 'Vendetta Records', how did you get in contact with this label?
Our EP was released by ourselves and the video for it was played on the infamous Blackmetalpromotion YouTube Channel.
Vendetta then luckily noticed and contacted us. It’s been a great collaboration ever since.
9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?
We are still a tiny fish in the sea of metal in general but the feedback has been insane.
We never ever imagined selling CDs and shirts to Australia, US and all over Europe… for example we have been deeply in love with Swedish Metal for many years and we now sold merch to some guys in Sweden. How crazy is that? And even one dude in the land of Black Metal Norway has our shirt. It means the world to us.
10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
We will see. The new music will be darker and hopefully more organic, if that makes sense. Right now the focus is on the release of Anemoia.
11.What are some of the bands or musical styles the band members are currently listening to nowadays?
Alec: I enjoy all kinds of music in general from Beatles to Queens Of The Stone Age to Behemoth. Especially after finishing the album I needed a break from metal. But I saw Ultar live these days and was overwhelmed by their performance so currently I’m diving deep into the Lovecraft black metal once again. Besides that I’m into old Metallica nowadays and for nostalgic reasons some old Metalcore bands like Unearth and many more.
Marc: In the last years I really got into russian Black Metal like “Ultar” and “Grima” and Woodgaze stuff like “TRNA”. In the moment also a band called “Antrisch” and still everything from “DWEF” is on my heavy rotation.
12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
We just can’t wait for Anemoia to be released and we hope some people will enjoy it. Special thanks to Vendetta for the collaboration and again we are very grateful for every single person who supports us in one way or another.
