None/Inevitable/Hypnotic Dirge Records/2023 Full Length Review

 

  None  where  a  duo  from  Portland,  Oregon  that has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  very  atmospheric  and  depressive  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2023  album  "Inevitable"  which  was  released  by  Hypnotic  Dirge  Records.

  Clean  playing  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  while  all  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  Whispers  can  also  be  heard  on  a  few  songs  along  with  the  vocals  being  mostly  high  pitched  depressive  black  metal  screams  and the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  melody.  

  The  album  also  has  its  atmospheric  moments  while  synths  are  also  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  when  they  are  utilized.

   When  the  music  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  album  more  of  a  raw  feeling  along  with  most  of  the  album  also  sticking  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  tempo  direction,  spoken  word  samples  are  also  utilized  on  a  couple  of  tracks  and  one  song  also  adds  in  a  brief  use  of  acoustic  guitars.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  nihilism,  existential  loss  and  failure  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  None  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  and  depressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Alone,  Where  I  Can  See"  and  "Rest".  8  out  of  `0.

None/Damp Chill Of Life/Hypnotic Dirge Records/2019 CD Review

  Portland,  Oregon's  None  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  the  atmospheric  and  depressive  style  of  black  metal  from  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2019  album  "Damp  Chill  Of  Life"  which  will  be  released  in  April  by  Hypnotic  Dirge  Records.

  Ambient  style  synths  which  are  also  used  on  later  tracks  start  off  the  album  and  after  the  intro  the  music  goes  into  more  of  a  heavier  direction.  A  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  and  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording.

  Clean  vocals  can  also  be  heard  briefly  before  evolving  into  high  pitched  depressive  black  metal  screams.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  more  of  a  melodic  style  while  the  tremolo  picking  riffs  when  they  are  brought  into  the  music  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  None  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  and  depressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Damp  Chill  Of  Life"  and  "A  Chance  I'd  Never  have".  8  out  of  10.

  Ambient  style  synths  start  off  the  album  while  acoustic guitars  can  also  be  heard  on  a  few  tracks  before going  into  more  of  a  heavier  and  melodic direction  which  also  mixes  in  with  the  more  atmospheric  side  of  the  music  as  well  as  the  vocals  being  mostly  high  pitched  depressive  black  metal  screams.

  Most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  clean  singing  can  also  be  heard  briefly  along  with  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  bringing  in  elements  of  doom  metal  and  as  the  album  progresses  some  cascadian  and  post  rock  elements  can  be  heard  as  well  as  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts  on  a  couple  of  the  songs  and  when  guitar  leads  are  finally  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion,  all  of  the  music  sticks  to  a  very  slow  direction  and  they  close  the  album  with  a  cover  of  Burzum's  "Illa  Tibandi".

  None  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  their  atmospheric  and  depressive  style  of  black  metal  while  also  keeping  everything  in  a  slower  direction,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the lyrics  cover  misery,  grief  and  alcoholism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  None  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  and  depressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "A  World,  Dead  And  Gray"  "Corroded"  and  "Life  Is  Long  Enough".  8  out  of  10.

None/Self Titled/Hypnotic Dirge Records/2017 CD Review

  None  are  a  band  from  the  Pacific  Northwest  that  plays  a  very  atmospheric  and  depressive  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is a  review  of  their  self  titled  2017  album  which  will  be  released  in  April  by  Hypnotic  Dirge  Records.

  Atmospheric  and  tragic  sounding  keyboards  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  elements  of  ambient  and  they  also  mix  in  with  the  more  heavy  and  depressive  guitar  riffing  and  mournful  voices  can  also  hear  heard  in  the  background  at  times  and  after  awhile  grim  yet  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  make  their  presence known.

  A  great  amount  of  cascadian  and  doom  metal  influences  can  be  heard  in  the  bands  depressive  musical  style  along  with  all  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  sound  very  powerful.

  When  acoustic  guitars  are  utilized  they  bring  in  a  touch  of  neo  folk  to  the  recording  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  use  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  to  give  the  music  more  of  a  raw  black  metal  feeling  and  as  the  album  progresses  the  music  also  adds  in  a  more  progressive  touch.

  None  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  atmospheric  and  depressive  along  with  some  cascadian  and  doom  metal  elements,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  depressive  themes.

  In  my  opinion  None  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric  and  depressive  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Suffer".  8  out  of  10.
