Eyelids/Scars Under The Snow/Vacula Productions/2020 Full Length Review

Italy's  Eyelids  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  the  atmospheric  and  depressive  style  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  album  "Scars  under  The  Snow" which  was  released  by  Vacula  Productions.

Atmospheric  sounding  synths  and  nature  sounds  start  off  the album  before  going  into  a  heavier  musical  direction.  All  of  the  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  and  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  yet  depressive  black  metal  screams.

The  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  album  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  some  of  the  tracks  also  being  long  and  epic  in  length.

When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  the  music  also  mixing  the  atmospheric  elements  into the  heavier  sections  of  the  recording.  Old  school  influences  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  guitar  riffing as  well  as  one  track  also  introducing  clean  playing  onto  the  recording,  synths  also  make  a  a  brief  return  as  the  album  progresses  and  a  couple  of  tracks  also  adds  in  a  small  amount  of  whispered  and  clean  vocals  vocals.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  melancholy,  depression  and  solitude  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Eyelids  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  and  depressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Absence"  "Till  Death  Unites  Us  Again"  and  "Soul  Of  The  Forest".  8  out  of  10.

Eyelids/Endless Oblivion/2017 Full Length Review

Eyelids  are  a  band  from  Italy  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  depressive  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2017  album  "Endless  Oblivion".

Atmospheric  sounding  synths  start  off  the  album  and  after  awhile  heavy  guitars  and  depressive  black  metal  screams  are  added  onto  the  recording  and  when  guitar  leads  are  utilized  they  are  don  in  a  very  melodic  fashion  and  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording.

Clean  playing  can  be  heard  briefly  and  touches  of  the  modern  atmospheric  sound  can  also  be  heard  at  times  and  there  is  also  a  brief  use  of  acoustic  guitars  and  when  the  music  finally  speeds  up a   small  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  song  a  more  raw  feeling  while  the  main  focus  is  on  a  slow  or  mid  paced  musical  direction.

Eyelids  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  the  depressive  black  metal  style  of  previous  releases,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  melancholy,  depression,  and  solitude  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Eyelids  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  depressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "II"  and  "VI".  8  out  of  10.

Eyelids Interview

1.Recently you have released a demo, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?
1) Our sound includes a set of Depressive Black Metal, with moody streaks. We were looking for a very dark and dirty sound.
Our launch demo was done in 2015, it was released in April 2016 by "Masked Dead Records", and it was sould out in just four hours.

We didn't expect such a thing.

"Departure" has been our first release.

2.The band has been around since 2012 but waited until 2016 to release a demo, can you tell us a little bit more about the first 4 years?
2) It has to be said that, at the beginning, Eyelids' (project) started as an ambient strumental project, but we didn't release anything. As time goes by, we decided to take the way of dsbm.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores wit the music?
3) Our lyrics talk only about desolation, melancholy and solitude, and this is  what we want to send out to those who listen to us.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Eyelids'?
4) For us "eyelids" indicate a sense of weightlessness and abandonment, and eyes are the mirror of everything.

5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?
5) At the moment we do not perform, but in a second time, we could think about a formation to do that.
6.On a worldwide level how has he feedback been to our music by fans of depressive black metal?
6. DSBM is an elitist genre and not so popular, but the hit in the  underground, four our part, is positive.

7.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
7) Our sound is influencend by bands like Trist and Hypothermia. Our taste has always been projected in B.M.Our preferences are always focused on black metal. One of the album I've most listened in recent times is Futility of Mgla.

8.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
8) In our free time we would rather escape from the daily routine, and we like losing ourselves into nature.

9.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
9) We take the opportunity to say that soon the reprint of "Departure" will be released in a cd jewelcase version with "Adimere Records". After that we will be ready for our first EP. Stay tuned and follow us.

Many thanks to all of you of occultblackmetalzine!
