Illness/Schizophrenic Kingdoms/2021 EP Review

 

  Norway/Poland's  Illness  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  schizophrenic  style  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2021  ep  "Schizophrenic  Kingdoms".

  A  synth  orientated  intro  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  some  spoken  word  samples  which  also  gives  the  music  the  atmosphere  of  a  bad  nightmare  while  the  synths  also  mix  in  with  the  heavier  parts  of  the  music.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats.

  When  tremolo  picking  is  utilized  it  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Spoken  word  samples  are  also  added  on  the  later  tracks  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  the  ep  closes  with  a  cover  of  Thorns's  Aerie  Descent"  which  also  introduces  melodic  guitars  solos  and  leads  onto  the  recording.

  On  this  recording  Illness  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  aggressive  raw  and  synth  orientated.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  schizophrenia  and  mental  illness  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Illness  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw  and  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Insanity"  and  "Black  Schizophrenic  Metal".  8  out  of  10.

Illness/Trvmma/Black Plague Records/Metallic Media/2015 EP Review

  Illness  are  an  international  band  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  with  members  from  both  Poland  and  Norway that  play  a  schizophrenic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2015  ep  "Trvmma"  which  was  released  as  a  joint  effort  by  both  Black  Plague  Records  and  Metallic  Media.

  A  Chopin  classical  piece  starts  off  the  ep  and  after  the  intro  militant  drum  beats,  melodic  guitar  leads  and  a  heavier  sound  are  added  onto  the  recording  and  you  can  also  hear  the  sounds  of  human  torture  in  the  background  which  also  leads  to  more  of  a  raw,  fast  and  aggressive  black  metal  direction  that  also  uses  grim  screams  and  programmed  drum  beats.

  Drum  beats  on  the  recording  gives  the  musi9c  more  of  an  industrial  feeling  while  the  guitar  riffing  brings  in  an  old  school  Norwegian  style  black  metal  style  but  done  with  a  touch  of  the  Polish  style  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  small  use  of  spoken  word  samples  along  with  some  of  the  riffing  utilizing  a  great  amount  of  melody  and  they  also  bring  in  a  cover  of  Mysticum's  "The  Kingdom  Come"  before  closing  the  ep  with  2  original  tracks  which  also  bring  in  a  small  amount  of  atmospheric  synths   which  also bring  in  more  classical  music  elements.

  Illness plays a  style  of  black  metal  on  this  recording  that  can be  very  heavy  and  raw  at  times  while  also  adding  in  atmospheric,  industrial  and  classical  music  elements  to  create  a very  original  sounding  recording,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Polish  and  cover  paranoia,  illness. darkness  and  misanthropy  themes.  

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Illness  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black  metal  that  goes  for  a  schizophrenic  style,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Trumma"  and  "Cranium".  8  out  of  10.

Arkona/Illness/Godz Of War Productions/Third Eye Temple/2014 7 Inch Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  7  inch  between  Poland's  Arkona  and  Norway/Poland's  Illness  which will  be  released  as  a  joint  effort  in  September  by  Godz  Of  War  Productions  and  Third  Eye  Temple  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Arkona  a  band  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  raw  form  of  pagan  black  metal.

  Nature  sounds  start  off  their  song  before  going  into  a  fast  and  raw  black  metal  direction  along  with  some  high  pitched  screams  and  melodic  guitar  leads  which  leads  up  to  some  grim  screams  and  you  can  hear  the  bass  guitars  in  their  song  before  slowing  down  a  bit  and  adding  in  synths  to  make  their  music  sound  more  atmospheric  while  also  keeping  around  the  faster  sections  along  with  the  song  being  6  minutes  in  length  with  the  lyrics  being  written  in  Polish  and  covering  pagan  themes  and  the  production  on  their  track  is  very  raw  and  old  school  sounding.

  Next  up  is  Illness  a  band  that  plays  a  raw  and  misanthropic  form  of  black  metal.

  A  very  dark  and  distorted  sound  starts  off  their  track  before  getting  a  lot  more  heavy  along  with  some  thrash  elements  which  leads  up  to  more  of  a  fast  and  raw  black  metal  direction  along  with  some  grim  screams  and  blast  beats  before  adding  in  mid  paced  sections  and  spoken  word  parts  while  the  song  focuses  more  on  a  faster  and  brutal  direction  as  well  as  addign  in  a  small  amount  of  atmospheric  sounds  at  times,  the production  on  their  song  sounds  very  dark,  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Polish  and  cover  dark  and  paranoia  themes.

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  Polish  black  metal.  8  out  of  10.
