Apokathilosis are a band from Ireland that plays a very atmospheric and melodic form of black metal and this is a review of their self released 2015 album "Where Angels Fear To Tread".
A very dark and atmospheric ambient sound starts off the album before going into more of a heavy and melodic musical direction where you can also hear all of the instruments that are present on the recording and when the music speeds up a great album of blast beats can be heard while the vocals are grim black metal screams.
Atmospheric and heavy parts also mix together quite a bit throughout the recording and the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and the music also shows influences from the more melodic side of 90's black metal and spoken word parts can also be heard in certain sections of the recording while the tremolo picking also adds to a raw edge to the bands musical style and some riffs also bring in a touch of thrash and there is also a brif use of clean playing and acoustic guitars on one of the songs.
Apokathilosis plays a style of black metal that is very heavily rooted in the 90's and unlike most old school style bands that go for the Darkthrone style this band goes for the more melodic and atmospheric side of the genre of that era as well as demonstrating a great amount of talent and skill as musicians, the production sounds very professional for being a self released recording while the lyrics cover Philosophy, metaphysics and spirituality themes.
In my opinion Apokathilosis are a very great sounding raw and melodic black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Where Angels Fear To Tread" and "The Untameable Human Spirit". 8 out of 10.
