Sig:Ar:Tyr are a band from Ontario, Canada that plays a mixture of folk, pagan and black metal and this is a review of their 2016 album "Northen" which will be released in April by Hammerheart Records.
Synths and ocean sounds start off the album along with some guitars a few seconds later that use full chords before going into a heavier direction and after awhile high pitched black metal screams make their presence known on the recording and most of the songs are also very long and epic in length.
When guitar solos and leads are utilized they give the music more of a melodic and traditional metal feeling and all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them and some songs bring in a small amount of clean playing and there is also a brief use of spoken word parts and when classical guitars are utilized they bring in more of a folk music feeling and when the music speeds up a small amount of blast beats along with a more raw style of black metal while the music sticks mostly to a slow or mid paced musical direction.
Sig: Ar: Tyr creates a very epic and melodic style of pagan/black metal that also brings in a touch of folk and they also bring in a very guitar driven approach to the genre, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics are about the Vikings adventures and voyages to North America.
In my opinion Sig: Ar: Tyr are a very great sounding mixture of folk, pagan, and black metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Crownless" "Skraeling" and "Last Ship Sails". 8 out of 10.
