Akrotheism are a band from Greece that plays a very fast, aggressive and satanic/occult form of black metal and this is a review of their 2014 album "Behold The Son Of Plagues" which was released by Odium Records.
The album starts out with a slow and dark sound along with melodic chanting and atmospheric sounds and after the intro the music goes for a more fast and raw old school black metal sound along with blast beats and high pitched screams as well as adding melody to the guitar riffing and some deeper vocals and after awhile thrash influences are added into the music along with a mixture of slow and fast parts.
When the album goes into other songs the band start adding a more dark and occult sound to their music while still keeping around a great amount of fast and aggressive parts and on a couple of the songs they bring in more ritualistic sounds along with Gregorian chants and as time goes on by the vocals get a bit more grimmer and the guitars start utilizing a great amount of skill as well as having a more modern take on occult black metal.
As the album progresses samples are brought in briefly along with some more old school black metal elements and the album also gets more diverse while also remaining heavy and remaining true to black metal and they will be from fast songs to more slower ones which really bring out the occult atmosphere in the music and when the album get s close to the end there is a brief use of evil sounding female vocals being mixed in with all of the chaos and they are also added on the last song which is a Ved Buens Ende cover
With this album Akrotheism show they really understand the occult and satanic genres of black metal form the 90's to present day and this album has almost everything you would want in an album like this with some fast brutal parts, raw aggression, evil melodies and ritualistic sounds, they manage to bring it all in while also being pure black metal from beginning to end.
Song lyrics cover Orthodox Satanism, Nihilism, Esotericism, and Human Decadence, while the production has a very strong, powerful, heavy and dark sound along with the bass guitars being mixed down low in the mix as well as some of the songs being very long and epic in length.
In my opinion Akrotheism are a very great sounding dark and aggressive satanic/occult black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Antimatter As I" "Subhumans Anabaptism" "Salt Of Grace" and "Send us To The Swines". 9 out of 10.
