Atel are a solo project from California that has been recently featured in my zine and plays a very raw and depressive form of black metal and this is a review of his 2015 demo "Cold Misanthropic Wilderness" which was released by Defiledlight.
A very fast, raw and lo-fi black metal sound starts off the demo along with some primitive blast beats a few seconds later which also leads up to some grim, high pitched black metal screams and the songs bring in a lot of second wave 90's influences along with the songs bringing in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts.
At times the music can get very depressive while it is mixed in with a more raw style of black metal as opposed to the modern day dsbm style and the riffs are very much power chord driven along with a great amount of tremolo picking and one of the tracks is very long and epic in length and none of the songs ever utilize solos and leads and the music is very heavy, grim and raw from beginning to ending of the recording while a small amount of melody can be heard briefly.
Atel creates another black metal recording that is very raw in the second wave style while also adding in a more modern depressive touch and the music is purely black metal with no other genres ever being mixed in, the production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover depression, death, nature, misanthropy and anti religion themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Atel and if you are a fan of raw and depressive black metal, you should check out this demo. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Torment" "Anger" "Judas" and "Soil". 8 out of 10.
