Russia's solo project Frozen Ocean have returned with a new recording continuing the atmospheric style of ambient black metal that has been established on previous releases and this is a review of his ep "The Prowess Of Dormition" which will be released in 2016 by Apocalyptic Witchcraft Recordings.
A very raw, heavy, melodic and atmospheric black metal sound starts off the ep along with some solos and leads that also utilize a great amount of melody and clean playing can also be heard briefly at times and on some of the tracks acoustic guitars and ambient style synths are added onto the recording.
Most of the tracks are long and epic in length and the vocals that are used are mostly grim black metal screams while one of the tracks is all instrumental and as the ep progresses elements of electronic music can be heard while the music is still mostly guitar driven and most of the songs stick to either a slow or mid paced musical direction while one song the riffs speed up briefly and also brings in a few seconds of blast beats.
Frozen Ocean continue the epic, atmospheric style of black metal of previous recordings while also being more guitar driven this time around, the production sounds very raw and heavy while the lyrics cover winter, death and depression themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Frozen Ocean and if you are a fan of ambient and atmospheric black metal, you should enjoy this ep. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "No Blizzard" and "The Prowess Of Dormition". 8 out of 10.
